Johnny Cash's American recordings

Johnny Cash is of course a legend and if you dont own any of his records, you should run, not walk to the nearest record store and buy all his stuff.
That said, I would assert that the stuff he did for American Recordings and Rick Rubin was the best of anything he ever did.
American Recordings, Unchained, American III, American IV, American V and Unearthed.
Whats your take and opinion of the Johnny Cash later period albums?

My father died this past February and I was going thru his things and he had everything by Hank Williams and quite a bit of Johnny. I brought it all home, cds and vinyls, and I'm really getting into it............
Last note: In his den he had pictures of his grandkids, his wife and he, my sisters, even Hank Williams all framed and as I laughed my sister asked what was so funny...........Not one pic of his only son

Johnny Cash has always been good but like I stated it took me 30 years to give him an honest listen and it started with his later recordings. I think what we hear is a man who has lived his life and knows time is winding down but still has this conviction to sing these songs in the only way he knows - straight forward and honestly.
Now that you've discovered American Recordings start listening to his beginning records and go forward. I think you'll come to really appreciate this icon like I have.
