Let's pick and debate the best 2 Pearl Jam touring years + any other bands that you have extensive knowledge of.
Bands you've seen or listened to multiple shows from multiple years spanning a band's career.
"Best" meaning a mix of strong material, memorable performances, on fire and in their prime, best band member line-up.....you get the picture.

Pearl Jam - 2000.  2003.
Black Crowes - 1996. 2005.
Widespread Panic - 1993. 1997.
Grateful Dead - 1972. 1977.
Rolling Stones - 1972. 1981.
Led Zeppelin - 1972. 1975.
Pink Floyd - 1972. 1975.
The Who - 1969. 1973.

(Yes, clearly I like 1972.  Wish I had been there).
11-2-2000 Portland. 12-8-2002 Seattle. 4-18-2003 Nashville. 5-30-2003 Vancouver. 10-25-2003 Bridge School. 9-2-2005 Vancouver.
7-6-2006 Las Vegas. 7-20-2006 Portland. 7-22-2006 Gorge. 9-21-2009 Seattle. 9-22-2009 Seattle. 9-26-2009 Ridgefield. 9-25-2011 Vancouver.
11-29-2013 Portland. 10-16-2014 Detroit. 8-8-2018 Seattle. 8-10-2018 Seattle. 8-13-2018 Missoula.

    2000-2003 PJ is the best
but 2013-2016 is underrated considering the set length (30-36 songs each night)
    PJ 2014: Leeds, Milton Keynes
PJ 2018: London 1, Padova, Roma, Prague, Krakow, Berlin, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, London 2
    EV 2017: Amsterdam 2&3, London 1&2

Black Crowes well before 1996, that is Amorica time. The first two albums were HOT, the High as the Moon tour was my first in '92, and kicked ass. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YV9w8pokByU

Yeah, I chose ‘96 because it encompasses all the Amorica stuff + 3 Snakes material. But you are right, as far as just crushing in-your- face rock and roll..... High As the Moon was extraordinary. I saw them once early on the tour (hungry, something to prove) and once late in the tour (road tested, weary, and raw). Completely different band, but both incredible.
‘96 they could do no wrong, until it fell apart a year later.

PJ 1998.   Matt Cameron’s instincts vs knowledge made the songs really intense and most crowds hadnt seen PJ in five years.  Crazy crowds

Pearl Jams best touring years - 2003 and I am cheating and combining 1995/96

Dead - I definitely like parts about '72, but I really like the 1974 shows and 1977 is impossible to overlook (not too far off the path 1990)

    Neil & Crazy Horse - 1978, 1990

The Who - 1972 and 1996 Quadrophenia tour.

    Phish - 1995 and 1997
His eminence has yet to show.

Interesting -- would be cool to have someone that went to shows from all of those years weigh in.  Only a handful of folks here were born early enough to be able to do that.

I went to shows on every US tour since 94. I could not even come close to pinning down a "best" range.

94 was best for pure anger and energy
96 was best for GA shows and crowds
98 shows were hit and miss, but the garden it all hit
00 was hitting their stride in setlists
03 was thrilling, presets, amazing covers, maybe my favorite, but man, who knows
05 Nader tour was ok, just happy to see them in smaller places
06 Amazing again, Ed sounding maybe his best

Maybe more later, I gotta get some work done...

You have to put 1998 in there for DMB.  Agree with the PJ years.

Let's add Tool to the list.  2001/2002 has to be up there.  I didn't see them prior so I can't comment but Lateralus tour was amazing.

I put 2000 in instead, lillywhite material put it over the edge of the winter 98 greatness

PJ: 2006 and 2003 for me
2006 was simply great, band tight and Ed's vocals on spot. I saw two shows on that tour, but anyway 2006 was their live peak to me: varied setlists, solid shows.. No Sirens et similia that polluted any shows..
2003 I always had a soft spot for it. It's where they started to really mix up things into their shows, bringin back some songs not played in years and years. Riot Act is a masterpiece to me, so here it goes.. Also, the cardboard cases of the 03 boots smell very very good. Yum.

Let me just say also that Nirvana in 1991 were as good as ever. I would give my right hand pinky in trade for a chance of seeing one show from that era (like Mezzago 91). 1989 a great year too for them.

I didn’t notice that so much. I felt the band was tight, the energy was great and the setlists were unique. It also helps that I got Wash and Who You Are

How about PJ in 2014? Longer sets, varied sets and no opening bands?

Listening to boots, PJs 2000 tour is kind of dull.
Not if you are a Binaural fan, like me.

Also, it’s the last tour where songs were played at proper tempo. Everything turned to machine gun rapid fire speed after that.
For instance, I just listened to, appropriately for you, the 2000 Sweden show. Present Tense was played at the same speed as studio album.
    11-2-2000 Portland. 12-8-2002 Seattle. 4-18-2003 Nashville. 5-30-2003 Vancouver. 10-25-2003 Bridge School. 9-2-2005 Vancouver.

Dull is definitely not how I'd describe that tour. Ed was vicious on his vocals yet and Binaural never sounded better live than on that tour. Some of the songs were still pretty good in '03, but I prefer them on the original tour for that album. '03 is by far their best sounding tour overall. I think '06 could sound good, but some of the range was starting to fade already. By '08, there was clear decline on some of the more difficult songs. Ed still sounds amazing, but he became more hit or miss depending on the night after the '03 tour. The improvs started to disappear each tour after that and there was less variation on the tags he added in.
    It's a hopeless situation...

I forgot to mention Janes Addiction.  I missed out on seeing the early 90's JA shows.  However, Seeing them in 1997 with Flea on bass, was a top 5 all-time concert for me. Seen them multiple times since.  They still put on a good show, but was especially pleasantly surprised with one in 2012 on the Theater of the Escapist Tour.  Amazing music accompanied by amazing visual artistry, hot goth dancers, and Dave Navarro is one of the best "cigarette danglers" in rock history.  (nobody can dangle a smoke from the corner of the mouth better than Keith Richards, though).

Have seen them consistently since '96 and I'd say '03-'06 was the peak. Nothing beats a full scale tour - 10 or so shows within 5 hours of Boston. Those sets really were the template for what they've been the last 15 years. Great openers - I miss that more than I thought I would. Ed coming out to do a song pre-opener or joining the opener or The Experiment in Mansfield - there was a touch more spontaneity then.

All that said, it's impressive how strong they still are. Those Fenway shows last month were a band at the top of their game as performers. I do long for the arenas, smaller cities, and bands they brought out, though.

I saw the Crowes about a dozen times, though never in the 90s. For me, that 2010 Say Goodnight to the Bad Guys acoustic/electric tour was incredible. A real shame they can't keep it together. They were so tight by that point.

Early 2000s, post-Lateralus Tool was really something to behold. Completely unique experience. Have seen them a few times recently - still a good show but a fraction of what they were. Hope this new record sees the light of day and is an inspiration for them.
