The band can barely get a one disc album together at this point...a double is a pipe dream

Not sure they’ve ever had it in them to make a great double album, maybe sometime between No Code and Binaural when they were at their most experimental. Definitely not at this point.

I can't imagine having to listen to an album that was filled with songs from BOTH Backspacer AND Lightning Bolt!

Got myself thinking, what two PJ albums would combine for the best double album? Vs & Vitalogy? No Code & Yield? Another pairing?

Would you just pair the albums or shuffle the track list between the two albums?

I just think those eras match up pretty nicely. I'd pair them.

I think ten was an amazing chance at a double album... songs also made during that time, wash, alone, state, brother, breath, yellow ledbetter, footsteps, just a girl, hold on, dirty frank, leash, Evil little goat.

That could have been one of the best doubles ever created.  Very deep catalogue.

Good point. Has a band ever debuted with a double album?

Were a lot of the songs from Vitalogy "outtakes" from the Vs sessions? I know the reasoning behind them omitting Better Man but songs like Whipping, Tremor Christ, and Last Exit were played in 1993.

  • I was thinking Stadium Arcadium analogy, too! I’d love PJ to release a huge collection of new songs with no concept behind them. Just like RHCP did. Different songs, different sounds, different flavours and moods. Thats what makes The White Album and Stadium Arcadium (yes!) so great.

I wouldnt mind a double album with experimental songs, ukelele songs, a gospel choir, 8-minute medley or song based on killer riffs (Anyone remembers „I dont know anything” by Mad Season?)

    that would be fun!!!:)

I'd really like to hear PJ do a blues record. Mostly originals and maybe a couple covers.

They definitely have the chops to make it interesting.

Some of my favorite PJ songs are rooted in the blues. I definitely think they could pull this off.

Im a casual Green Day fan. Remember they did 3 albums (Uno, dos, tre) within months of each other?

It should have been cut to just 1 album and it would have been pretty solid.

If you count Lost Dogs (a compilation album) then I guess you could include RVM?

I’d say that concept albums are rarely a good thing.

But Rolling Stones Exile on Mainstreet and Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti.......

PJ is capable of matching those classics.
    Not to mention The Wall
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness...

to have ideas for songs,to play some riffs to write down some lyrics, have some ideas to get them in studio and make a record in the level of goor music as pj create so many year is a long distance..
make music, songs, write lyrics and make an album isnt like order pizza and u have it in your door in 30 minutes.
and double album has double work..
artists sould have their own tme and space to create..and especially after so many years that they dont have anymore a contract that put them deadlines to do stuff
yeah..we all want new music, but needs to be done their wa,not ours
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
    "..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”

    I don't remember that.
Weezer did something similar. They've gone several years between albums at times, but they put 3 out within a 2 year period (Red Album, Ratitude, Hurley). There were a total of about 5 or 6 good songs on those 3 albums. Still would have been a sub-par single album.
Look at the last few albums from PJ, does anyone really expect a double album of great material at this point?

Ignoring any "theme" I could make a really solid single album using 12 or so songs from their last three albums but definitely not a double album.

...although personally I couldn't write a song half as good as Johnny Guitar (which is pretty....bad) so maybe I shouldn't throw stones..

hahaha double album!! can barely get 1 song out this band in the last half decade.
  • It is a part time band.  Jeff could be offended by that so I will clarify and say they are a full time business but a part time band.
  • how ever many they had with Chris dying  that is a whole album right there so double is not out
  • I think they should give us one new disc of 12-13 originals then pair that with a second disc of covers done in the studio.  Give us the definitive versions of a few covers they do all the time live and add in a few new ones.  I know people bitch about covers and stuff in the shows but I'd be stoked to get a disc of those alongside a new LP and it would be fairly easy for the band to go in and record them since they are mostly live staples anyway.

Speaking of covers, I wish they'd bring back Love Reign O'er Me.
Got to hear it twice, and was maybe my favorite cover they've done. Maybe.

I'd guess not. 50+ year old millionaires don't write double albums. 20 somethings with something to prove do. I'm expecting Lightning Bolt part 2...but anything would be welcome at this point. Binaural with all it's B-sides was basically their double album.
  • thispureamericanriotthispureamericanriot California Posts: 514
Also...Riot Act was basically a double album. 15 songs plus 3 b-sides...18 total songs probably qualifies as double album territory. So basically PJ "unofficially" released TWO double albums in a row (Binaural and Riot Act). We shouldn't be so greedy, since I think the band has peaked and is closer to retirement than busting out a new double album at this point. But I hope they do - both Bob Dylan and Red Hot Chili Peppers had some late-career gems. Time Out Of Mind (won a grammy) and Stadium Arcadium come to mind.

Excellent points. I hadn't really thought of it that way.  An incredibly productive period with 2 massive tours, too. 2000-2003.
