I have a friend who has lived in Paris for almost 20 years working for a French company.  He gets off all of August, 2 weeks at Christmas, and another 2 weeks to use as he wishes. This is in addition  to sick leave and personal days.
Yeah, France has a 52 day minimum for paid vacation I believe (I had a French BF once, and I'm pretty sure that's what he said it was).
5 weeks (30 days with Saturdays, but not Sundays counted as holidays) plus up to 22 days of RTT (Réduction du Temps de Travail, English: Reduction of Working Time) for the employees that choose to work more than 35 hours per week - the "limit" is 39 per week, further additional hours are compensated in almost all the cases by money and not by additional leave hours. Bonus days off are given to people who take a part of their annual leave outside summer (3 days grant 1 bonus day off, 6 days grant 2 bonus days off). Combining all these rules, in a few public offices and in a few companies like Orange, the resulting total, for certain employees, might be of 9.5 paid vacation weeks (5 weeks of vacation + 4 weeks of RTT + 0.5 week of bonus days off). Furthermore, there are 11 paid public holidays
That sounds amazing! And I love the 39 hour rule.
I never looked into it, but was told a law was passed that employees paid less than 50k must be hourly here. Because too many employers were forcing the employees to work over time without pay, for a job less than 50k. Totally sucks.
When my friend first moved to Paris and started his job he found it hard to decelerate to the French way of not working so damn much.

He needed to step outside America to look back at America and establish the fact that this isn't normal. It's like dealing with an alcoholic who doesn't recognize he has a problem.

73,500 injured. We rarely talk about the injuries- we only talk about the deaths.

With regards to the 'car argument'... do guns impact lives positively like cars do? Is the right to bear firearms worth the collateral damage?

    Dear America,

We thank you for this lovely gift.

    Respectfully,

PS Can you accidentally send us some planes, ships and tanks ... that it'll be all for now.

Isn't there active shooters everyday? Is there any point to bringing these events up? Like any of us would even pause as we sip our coffee?

Par for the course, Cincy. The US has more than demonstrated it is prepared for the 'collateral damage' associated with the loose interpretation of the 2nd amendment (under the guise of needing sophisticated weapons for home defence so that it can shoot shit).

    Thoughts and prayers!

Yeah I guess it happens everyday. I’ll still point it out when the mood hits me. I may have spoken too soon, different reports saying different things about fatalities.

Recent study confirms what we already intuitively know - mass shootings with semi-automatic weapons are more deadly as they produce more victims.

Incidentally, this article also highlights the difficulties in doing research into gun violence in the US.

Almost every day there is a new link in this thread showcasing more fine members of our well-regulated militia.  But no, we don't have a gun problem in MRRKKKA!
  • Now that’s what the NRA should be all about. I’m sure some on here love it though.

Surprised there has been no mention of this one today?  Legally armed citizen saves a cops life from someone using an illegal fully automatic firearm and not a peep?

Good for him.  He wouldn't have to act if we kept fully automatic weapons out of the hands of people in the first place.

So you think he had it legally or what?  Regulations are pretty damn strict on the ownership of fully auto weapons.

The article clearly states he illegally possessed it. Yet he still possessed it.  The weapon in possession needs to be taken out of the equation so that it cannot be possessed.

And how would you suggest doing that?  It is a very strictly regulated firearm.  How would you guess he obtained it (I know it is just a guess at this point).
And i’m just going to also assume you know the difference between “automatic” and “semi-autimatic” weapons in regards to legally and difficulty in obtaining. I take that for granted sometimes, though.
