Better get your God on and not just any God, Team Trump Treason's God.

What a 'Nation of faith' looks like

The 161st session of the Southern Baptist Convention assembled this week in Dallas, Texas. The Convention includes more than 47,000 churches ministering to more than 15 million people, and its houses of worship can be found in all 50 states and in communities of every size.

Vice President Mike Pence addressed the Convention yesterday. "You know, the President likes to say, in his words, that we're a Nation of faith," the Vice President said. "The truth is, Southern Baptists have always worked to bring about renewal of America, and new beginnings. And as I stand before you today, I believe that our Nation is in the midst of a time of renewal."

The real source of America's greatness, he reiterated, is in the work of its people. "The truth is no podium that President Trump and I will ever stand behind will be of greater consequence than the pulpits you stand behind every Sunday morning. No policy we enact will ever be more meaningful than the ministries you lead. And no action we take will ever be more powerful than your prayers."

Read Vice President Pence's words in full to the Southern Baptist Convention.

I have read that Pence did not get a wholly positive (holy positive?) reaction at the convention. Some prominent people apparently spoke against the administration, and in fact there was a strong movement to disinvite him - just not quite strong enough.

Pence is getting ripped in all sorts of religious publications.  His speech should have been about the Word, Faith and the Gospel, not a MAGA cheer leading event.

    From the American Conservative...

Politicians on both sides speak to national church gatherings all the time. You know that, right? It’s not unusual for the Southern Baptist Convention to have invited Vice President Mike Pence to address their annual meeting today.

Some Baptists said in advance that it was a bad idea. For one, the role of Robert Jeffress, pastor of First Baptist Dallas, one of the biggest and most powerful church in the SBC, as a chief spiritual adviser for Donald Trump has been controversial within church circles. Many younger Southern Baptists — conservatives, not liberals — are tired of the denomination’s close association with the Republican Party. Plus, Trump’s history of treating women crudely does not sit well with many in the SBC, which has been stricken by a sex abuse scandal that has taken out its most accomplished conservative leader, Paige Patterson. (N.B., Patterson was not personally accused of abuse, but of handling it very badly.)

Nevertheless, Pence came. This would have been a perfect occasion for the vice president to deliver a policy speech on the importance of protecting religious liberty — an issue that matters to Southern Baptists more than just about anybody.

Nope. Most of the speech — which you can watch here — was pure political #MAGA. “Under President Donald Trump, America is back, and we’re just getting started!” he said, in a typical line.

When Pence did bring up religious liberty, he spoke passionately about how the administration is dedicated to getting rid of the Johnson Amendment, a provision of the tax code forbidding non-profit organizations from endorsing or opposing particular candidates.

“We will not rest until it is repealed!” Pence thundered. The tepid applause indicates how low on the priority list the Johnson Amendment is for most Christians, even those who are really engaged on the religious liberty issue. It only really matters to the machers of Conservative Christianity, Inc.

Pence mentioned abortion and persecuted Christians abroad, but explicitly in context of how Christians have never had it so good as they do under Trump. It was a repulsive speech, quite frankly, despite some good non-political material at the end, added almost as an afterthought.

The Southern Baptists are not theologically liberal, mind you. For Southern Baptists hoping to escape their “Republican Party At Prayer” image, and refocus their denomination on religious mission, the Pence speech was a huge setback.

UPDATE: I know these guys. They’re conservatives.

I know the SBC has welcomed politicians on occasion going back 45 years, but has there ever been a full-blown campaign speech like this one? #SBC18 #SBCAM18

That it happened was bad enough. That it was essentially a stump speech was unbearable.

Reminds me of that insane Boy Scouts of America speech Trump gave a while back. Just completely tone deaf and inappropriate. Also, Pence is a huge scumbag as a religious person. Trump is literally pretending to be religious in the White House. Surely that is some kind of sin in Pence's faith... but he doesn't care. He just endorses him anyhow. Pence is a disgrace to his faith IMO, and that is said without my colouring it with my own anti-religion beliefs. Even as an Atheist, I find Pence's position as a man of faith and as an endorser of Trump the fake Christian absolutely reprehensible in the context of faith. I think that any Christian who isn't appalled by all this is also basically a fake Christian, just like their hero.

There's a quote attributed to Ghandi (unconfirmed), but I like it anyway.

I thought the repubes were pro-life? Is taking the most vulnerable humans, children, away from their parents and housing them in tents because their parents brought them to the border of the alleged greatest country on earth? Maybe Team Trump Treason can put them to work building the wall for their 3 colds and a cot? “Please sir? Can I have some more?”

Repubes, pro life and pro family and family values until you’re born.

    Wake the fuck up people.

It’s a dangerous slope to have people kicking people out of businesses when you disagree with their politics.  Although it’s a private business and tough to say government should control who they can and cannot serve and politics isn’t a protected area.

But then again, this admin is different then just politics as it seems to support racists and sexist agendas. So I do find this to be a tough subject to wrap my head around
