Very sad. Apparently she died in her sleep, which is a great way to go for gorillas and humans alike IMO.
She was 46 years old, which is at the high end of a gorilla's average lifespan - I guess he was well taken care of. I just hope she was happy living the way she did among the humans instead of where she should have lived, out in the wild (but safe from fucking poachers). I've always felt conflicted about Koko. I'm strongly against keeping wild animals in captivity... but in Koko's case it's just a bit different because of the very unusual relationship she had with her keepers, being able to carry on full communication with them.... I don't know if that was a good thing for her or a bad thing. Did she ever manage to express her feelings about this? Was she at all aware of "the wild" for that matter? Did she have any knowledge of what she was missing? I have to assume she at least suffered from limited relationships with other gorillas, which makes me sad.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata
