2018 10C member shirt custom fees

maxferlmaxferl Quebec City Posts: 118
I received my new 10C member shirt and unfortunately I had to pay custom fees. Is it normal? Any fellow Canadian here who had the same issue?

I had that with a $35 poster from here. Yet I can buy something else with a $150 value and not get hit with customs fees. It's a crap shoot.
I think they just pulled your name out of the hat this time.

It sucks. I had to pay $16 for something that is supposed to be “free” with my membership. The value of the t-shirt is $30. The fees are half the price of the shirt. Who should I thank? 10c or Canada?

Bummer.  So far, I've never had to pay any customs fees.
    Yup, blame Canada.

Ya Canada. 10c has to put a value on the package and even $30 is a pretty low amount to warrant fees. So the agent who got your package decided to be a prick and make you pay.

CBSA has ramped up tax enforcement on incoming packages for several months now.  Probably going back to the last fall.  Our technical legal limits are $20 (in terms of Canadian dollars) or $60 if declared as a gift.   Customs has been superlax for decades, but they must have more staff.  I started to notice a trend last year and tried to avoid ordering from the US where possible.   Previously it was a rare occurrence for packages under $100 to get dinged.  Now it's alot more common :(

The US has proposed we raise our limits in the new NAFTA negotiations.  Hopefully Trump manages to win that one :)

Should the t-shirt be considered a gift? When I look at the fees, they charge taxes (around $6) and manutention fee (around $10). The manutention part is pretty high imo.

Hmm ... I didn't pay customs on the 2018 membership shirt. Also a few others here in Atlantic Canada who received them didn't get hit either many weeks apart.

I didn’t get hit on the 10C shirt but have on other 10C purchases, here in Ontario.  I have also noticed that customs Canada has been getting stingy in the last 6-8months.

I emailed 10C about the situation. They explained that the shirt should have been marked as a $1usd value (it is not possible to enter a $0 amount on a customs form, but $1 does not trigger an import fee). They credited the fees in my account. It turns out ok. Thank you 10C to have fixed it.

Wunderbar!!! That's great of them to credit you the fees. :)
