I just heard Laurel for the first time. Not gonna self incriminate but I have a new theory now. Otherwise fuck whoever is responsible for this. Stop listening now!

I hear Yanny, but apparently the word being said is laurel, so apparently my ears are all messed up.

So on the radio last night the station I listened to played it and I  heard Laurel.  Listened to the clip in this thread again and I heard Laurel this time.  All times before that I heard Yanny so maybe I'm losing my mind.

Check yourself, fool! The recording is of an opera singer with perfect diction saying the word "laurel" for vocabulary.com (https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/laurel).

There is nothing wrong with anyone who hears an actual word being spoken by an absolute ace of articulation.

On the other hand, someone who hears a nonsense sound and then claims aural superiority is perhaps something of a douchenozzle.

Now that I listen to it again he clearly says Laurel, it was another sound before.

    It's both.

Yanny is spoken at a higher tone, and Laurel is spoken with a lower tone. They're dubbed over each other.

Correct but can you actually hear both of them.  I can.

Why would Vocabulary.com dub a nonsense word over/under an actual word?

    This is just wrong.

What you're hearing with yanny is the aural equivalent of a negative afterimage. In other words, you're hallucinating.

That didn't work for me, even after I began being able to hear both at the same time. After that, my brain decided it would only hear Yanni, and I can't hear Lauren anymore even when I try and already know what it sounds like.

So basically what they did was turn up the "negative" part to make it louder, which makes it sound like two distinct words dubbed over each other.  When I play the vocab.com  audio clip, it's clearly "laurel" as fuck, and the "negative" yanny part is barely intelligible.
