@brianlux , my daughter has had a very strong opinion about this particular issue since she was at least 6 years old. She’s been to two marches with me; this one will be our third. She has one of the loudest voices there.

That's one of the things i learned early on in parenting never to dismiss their opinions , it's incredible how much info kids do take in these days they are way more informed than what adults wan't to give them credit for ....

Fantastic!  High fives for you both!

Seventeen minutes of silence with their backs turned to the White House. Registering people to vote. Activism is a beautiful sight to behold. It shouldn't have to be this way for them but they sure are stepping up.

It’s definitely different this time. Change is coming. So proud of these kids.

Agreed.  I can't help but be reminded of a scene from the film, Grand Canyon:

Man, the world ain't supposed to work like this. I mean, maybe you don't know that yet. I'm supposed to be able to do my job without having to ask you if I can. That dude is supposed to be able to wait with his car without you ripping him off. Everything is supposed to be different than it is.

A few weeks ago I was watching Ken Burns' astounding series on Vietnam.  One of the most powerful moments was watching the Democratic Convention riots, and the young men and women protesting the war while being beaten by Daley's police thugs.  But it was an amazingly successful protest as it really crystallized an important moment of social change as the country started to turn against the war.

Now we are, at this moment, watching thousands of kids do the same.  Taking to the streets in social action, standing up for what they believe in, in some cases defying the Unsung's of their lives, the administrators that may threaten them with suspensions and the like.

God Bless these children.  I am so hopeful that we are seeing a real moment of social change taking place.  it could be history being written right in front of us.

And meanwhile, we have the GOP coming down on the wrong side of history, in an awful way.

I’m always amused at the apologies. “Sorry I showed you my true colors. I’ll keep them to myself from now on.” The saying goes, you can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube.

And I happen to know Emma, believe me, this stuff will have zero negative effect and will only backfire.

It certainly will! My daughter will be in DC along with hundreds of her classmates and hopefully a million others. The rest of us will be showing up all over the country. We will not be ignored!

Thousands of kids walk today, and its not even on the front page of fox news.com.  They are literally a parallel universe.

The NRA tweeted a pic of an assault weapon today. One month to the day after the shooting. I think we all know who the bad people are.

Do you actually know people that think this way? It's more troubling that you think they are mindless lemmings. Are you drawing off your own experience?

  • This is a pretty interesting and polarizing issue.  I believe it was Thomas Jefferson who stated that public education has the duty to "instruct the mass of our citizens in these, their rights, interests and duties."  A peaceful walkout doesn't seem to be a waste of tax payers money but possibly a way of showing youth how to peacefully interact with our great democracy.

They should walk out permantly until the idiot politicians guarantee that they’ll pass meaningful gun legislation...

I'm almost never the type to say "I wish I was young again" (go through all that all over again?  No thanks!) but if I were, I would walk out with the kids.

This thread is more proof that we need mental health assessments for firearm purchases lol
"Old man yells at cloud" sums it up pretty perfectly.

I actually do think the students should be punished though.
The whole point of civil disobedience is that you break the rules knowingly and you accept the consequences willingly.
The kids should be given Saturday detention, en masse.  Then the school should flip it around and bring in speakers to present an argument for both sides of the issue, go home and everyone is better off for it.

And then have to use our tax payer money for extra teachers on Saturday’s? Nonsense! I need that .0000003 cents that it would cost me.
