people keep asking the wrong questions when something like this happens. all I see is "how would the right have reacted if Obama/Hillary said this?". who gives a fuck? why not ask yourself this before you over react: "how would I have reacted if (the guy I liked) said this?". We all probably would have explained it away as playful banter at a rally based on historical and present context.
    disagree....way off here
yeah, cuz the left never overreacts over anything.

everything I've seen lately is the sky is constantly falling.it's getting tiring.
I wouldn't say the left never overreacts but this is beyond any semblance of normal.

I would also say that a lot of what you here as "if Obama did this, the right would be..." is just plain shock.  The way the right manipulates its base in this country is unreal.  They have convinced people that have no business voting republican to be ready at a moments notice to grab their guns and go to war for the GOP.
if he had been standing at a podium, pounding his fists on it yelling "TREASONOUS TRAITORS!!" I would agree with all of this. He's just an idiot who laps up anything his base yells out at him in support. is it irresponsible? of course it is. but the reaction from the left just makes them look like the hysterical fools the right wants so desperately for them to be.
    Darwinspeed, all.

My opinion is that the left is too restrained.  The right shouts out "you lie" during Obama's SOTU speech and the left gets called traitors for not clapping?

I think the leadership on the left should be calling for tRump to resign on a daily basis.  They should be constantly pointing out how foolish he makes the USA look to the rest of the world and constantly going after how much money he is personally making off of the government.

I don't recall that (I wasn't as engaged then as I am now).

I would agree with that statement. he is a terrible president who is profiting off the office. Not sure how he is getting away with it.

He's getting away with it because the GOP is complicit and they are in charge of the House of Representatives. Many won an election with Russian help last time too so they're expecting that benefit again. It why they try to prevent the investigation into the 2016 election.

the headlines I see when I google "trump treason" are laughable and fear mongering at its finest. "in dictator move...." is one of the funniest. But hey, I guess I'm a trump supporter now, right?
But he makes a lot of "dictator moves". I'm not sure I see the benefit of blowing of any of his comments, be they serious or not. All of them speak to his general thinking. I wish I never had to hear anyone talk abou normalization again.

It’s the left’s “snowflake” or other stupid response on repeat.
    No, it's not the equivalent.

And we always need to be reminded that this is not normal.

I have been called a Trump apologist in the past for no other reason than exhibiting some objectivity, so who knows what's next.

Obama reversed his position on the Patriot Act when he was president from when he was senator. I didn't see anyone on the left calling him a dictator or the media going ape-shit over it.

I didn't say blow them off. I said don't jump to hysterics every time he says something stupid. it is important to call him out on his bullshit in a rational way, but all this constant over-reaction will desensitize everyone to everything. The boy who cried wolf, as it were.

Except with trump, there is no historical context or equivalent. When that’s forced it doesn’t really have that a-ha effect. When trump supporters force the notion that Obama did it too across the board, that also doesn’t carry any weight.

Just normal....nothing to get worked up about.

Former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page says in a newly resurfaced video that he attended "a number of meetings" with President Trump.

The video clip tweeted by Scott Dworkin, an MSNBC contributor and founder of the anti-Trump Democratic Coalition, surfaced after Page said during an interview Tuesday on ABC's "Good Morning America" that he has never had any communication with Trump.

"I made a commitment not to talk about the internal work that I did at the campaign," Page says in the 2016 clip when asked whether he had ever met Trump.

"I've certainly been in a number of meetings with him and I've learned a tremendous amount from him."

Page made the remarks during a press conference in Moscow in December 2016.

Page said during the ABC News interview on Tuesday that he "never spoke" with Trump "any time in my life."

He was pressed on whether he had ever communicated with the president, including over email or text.

    "Never," Page replied.

Team Trump Treason is speaking and acting like a third world dictator and is doing irreparable harm to the US, democracy and our already tattered reputation. It’s not hysteria.
saying things like "doing irreparable harm" is exactly what hysteria is in my mind. is he doing harm? of course. irreparable? absolutely not.

All you have to do is check out how the press is being treated in other countries or listen to the FBI agents who say what he’s saying and doing undermines and damages what they try to do every day. Or look at how his cabinet appointments are running whole government agencies into the ground. Or how our government is going to have to borrow another trillion dollars to pay for a tax cut for the wealthiest amongst us. Being in Canada, you don’t have to suffer the consequences, yet.

Another point about tRump calling dems treasonous and un-American....that kind of talk can get someone hurt.  His gun toting zombie followers take that kind of talk to heart.  Adam Schiff is likely getting death threats because of that talk.
It was someone on the left who shot Steve Scalise (R) and others at the charity baseball game not that long ago. Adam Schiff is a good man and his response to trump's childish tweet was adult imho. The inflammatory language doesn't help our democracy at all.

the headlines I see when I google "trump treason" are laughable and fear mongering at its finest. "in dictator move...." is one of the funniest. But hey, I guess I'm a trump supporter now, right?
But he makes a lot of "dictator moves". I'm not sure I see the benefit of blowing of any of his comments, be they serious or not. All of them speak to his general thinking. Even jokes have a kernel of truth, and since you mentioned context... the context of Trump in particular saying shit like this actually does mean something more than if someone else said it.
Pretty sure nobody is accusing you of being a Trump supporter, lol.

But Obama didn't regularly and repeatedly display the traits and actions of a dictator. That comparison actually kind of proves my point. If Trump only said this, or just one thing in particular, and no other things that make him seem like a fascist, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Everyone understands the context in which Trump said this specific comment - we're not all idiots. But the fact that he was "making a funny" in this one instance really isn't the point.

    "Never," Page replied.

how fucking stupid can this guy be? he says completely contradicting statements on video. these idiots are sinking their own ship.

what DOES concern me is how people don't hold their elected officials in the US to account anymore. no one gives a shit when an elected official states on thing and there is video or photographic PROOF of the opposite, and no one cares. it boggles my mind.

in canada 6 years ago, one of the bigger scandals in government in recent memory was over 4 senators claiming primary residency outside of Ottawa so they could claim living expenses. That's our big federal government scandal.

I don't think it's just that. I think it's because politics in your country is so incredibly polarized now that people are willing to just forgive anything as long as their party wins. the ends justify the means. and the means are just a big joke now to people. you see people being confronted with Trump's lies, and they laugh "yeah, did you see how the snowflakes reacted to that one? he's just screwing with them, and it's GREAT!!!".

and dude, watch CNN for an hour. while it's nothing anywhere nearly as blatant as Fox, it is CLEARLY partisan news. The underlying tone is always that the republicans are evil. the headline is never "here's what the president said", it's "is the president lying?". There is a clear difference between truth telling and narrative spinning. Nearly every analyst on that network are democrats/liberals. And if they DO have the GOP on there, it's either moderate conservatives or someone they know is not a Trumpster or they lump them in with 3 other liberals to gang up on him during the round table discussion.

not sure how it proves your point when I wasn't countering your point to begin with. Again, I said don't blow it off, but it's not as hysterical as everyone is making it out to be. there are checks and balances to what he can do. Of course Obama didn't act like this; for one, he seems like a likeable guy, two, even if he wasn't, he is infinitely smarter than Trump and knew what to say in public and what not to.

and yes, we would be having this conversation if he only said one thing like this. we have been having this conversation since the first stupid thing he said. it just so happens that the topic of conversation changes because he says things like this quicker than we can forget the last one.

there is a very small subsection of supporters that actually take trump seriously at his every word. everyone else supports "his" agenda, but simply blows off his stupid comments as just that, stupid. they tolerate his idiocy to further their conservative agenda.

 Er, okay... what I meant was, then, the Obama comparison doesn't work. You didn't see anyone on the left calling him a dictator or the media going ape-shit because him doing it didn't make him suddenly seem like a dictator (of course, it was controversial - it's not like people ignored what it meant for America). I actually don't feel like anyone has been "hysterical" about it anyway TBH. And I don't see how "checks and balances" really play in here. Frankly, I think these so-called checks and balances are much less reliable than a lot of people seem to think they are. Democracy is degraded slowly through propaganda, through a bunch of little things that work on the minds of the people and on the way government is run. That only a minority of people support Trump doesn't change that fact. All the tweets, all the quips, combined with all the firings, all the attacks on the justice system and the media, the subtle but purposeful erosion of public trust in the current system ... all those thing culminate into something very dangerous that these "checks and balances" don't necessarily stop in the long run.

people have been making comparisons to Hitler since day 1. that has not stopped. maybe not the hitler reference specificaly as much anymore (because so many people dismiss it now as ridiculous), but the "dictator" comments remain. as evidenced here and all over the place.

yeah, that's just a tad hysterical.

Because no country has ever went from a functioning democracy to a dictatorship ever. It's like people don't "history" anymore.

I'm sure when those countries checks, balances, norms and institutions were under attack daily there were people telling the people who were raising the alarm that they were being hysterical.

Don't worry, everything will be A.O.K!

Whenever I’ve watched CNN lately they always have some trump shill/apologist. They give him time to speak and he just sounds ridiculous trying to make something trump is saying or doing into something else to appear digestible.
