Lots of good choices mentioned, I'll second Dig! . Shows the underside of music business .

Also highly recommended 'secret to a happy ending','pj20', and 'running down a dream'. The petty one is an all nighter, but still a great watch.

Dig! is amazing, and funny too... never heard of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, great music, and The Dandy Warhols were/are pretty cool, I thought just the opposite about them, I remember the LaChapelle video, that video sucked, and I didn't like the song, but I had the chance to listen to other songs from that film and they were pretty good... I have to say that Courtney Taylor was right about the LaChapelle video issue...

A lot of good ones out there with the rise of Netflix and other streaming services

    Hired Guns
    I’ll Be Me
    History of the Eagles
    Wrecking Crew

The Hip one is very good. Not a fan, but interesting to see how they managed. Watching bits of the live stream of their last show was an emotional experience.

A second It Might Get Loud is getting rolling. Haven’t heard any names or eta, but one to keep an eye out for.

    We're big Sam Dunn fans.
    Rush:  Beyond the Lighted Stage
    Iron Maiden:  Flight 666
    Global Metal
    Metal:  A Headbanger's Journey

He also did Metal Evolution.  We've spent many hours watching that.

Not a Sam thing, but I also love loudQUIETloud (Pixies) and just received the R.E.M. BY MTV blu-ray for Christmas. (Just watched it on NYE.)  We also watched Time Stands Still (Rush) on NYE, but I have a love for BTLStage a bit more.

My husband, a death metal guy, is a big rock doc guy.

I got a couple Music documentaries at Christmas, both of which are outstanding!
"American Epic".  Well titled.  It is epic!

    And this awesome set:

“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”

I haven't seen the Trane video yet.  Definitely on m list!  The Hip show sounds great too, though I'm guessing rather sad as well.

Yes, very sad.  But amazing as well, a great tribute to Gord's spirit.  I teared up many times.

A Band Called Death - It's about these guys in the earliesh 70s that made a punk album, but it predates the punk explosion.  They recorded it, couldn't get signed, and it got shelved.  They self release a 45 and that's it.   The documentary is more about the guys, what happened to them etc.... and what led to people discovering the music.

Searching for Sugarman - It's about a guy that made an album, nothing happened to it, and he spent his life doing construction.    It turns the album was megahuge in South Africa, and the movieis about them trying to find out what happened to Rodriguez.    It's pretty awesome.

    Other Docs:

Runnin Down a Dream (Tom Petty doc)
It Might Get Loud (doc with Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White)
    PJ20
Foo Fighters - Sonic Highways Miniseries is super awesome (they go to different cities in North America, and you get a doc on the music there and it's history)
Foo Fighters - Back and Forth

I'm sure I could think of more.  Those first two are amazing.. especially considering nobody is familiar with the musicians in them.

My favourite music documentaries are "Searching for Sugar-man" (story of Rodriguez) and "Not Dead Yet" (About guitarist Jason Becker, who has ALS and is still composing music even though all he can move is his eyes)

  • I love Searching for Sugarman, as others have mentioned.  There is a new David Bowie one on HBO tonight, called the Last Five Years.  Hoping it's good.

I can't believe I missed/have never heard of the Mother Love Bone/Andrew Wood one others have mentioned.  Trying to find it, is it called Malfunkshun?  Anyone know the best place to see it now?

Malfunkshun: The Andrew Wood Story is a 2005 documentary film based on the life of Andrew Wood, singer/songwriter for the Seattle-based alternative rock bands Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone. The film includes interviews with fellow Seattle musicians and friends such as Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil, Jeff Ament, and Stone Gossard.

Eric Clapton - A Life In 12 Bars (Showtime doc)  I learned a lot, kinda long, but overall very good. There's a ton of old footage.  I'm surprised he survived his drug and alcohol addictions.

Saw The Decline of Western Civilization last night.   Never seen it before.  Pretty much about the LA punk scene in '79-'80.  Kinda funny to see a young Keith Morris and Pat Smear.  Wasn't too familiar with a few of the bands but knew most of them through reputation (Germs, Circle Jerks, X, Black Flag, Fear)
