Why can't we just do the only thing that makes sense and implement single payer. :anguished:
Because I have zero interest in "Medicare for All." Dealing with my mother's Medicare provided health care -- it's a bullshit nightmare trying to get her what she needs. The only reason she's still alive at this point is her Kaiser Advantage Plan. To get any help from Medicare, you have to be practically dead.
Then that system sucks too. So why not have a single payer system that isn't a pain in the ass?? Those exist in a lot of other places.
There's another thread for health care, so I don't want to get too deep into it. But to answer your question, I personally am not interested in any kind of "managed care" system where other people decide what services I am eligible for depending on their matrix and protocols. I'm super satisfied with my preferred provider plan where I get my health care on demand. I decide which doctors, which treatments, and when. It would be wonderful if we could make what I have available and affordable to everybody. But I don't trust my government one bit to figure out how to do that. I don't trust my government to get anything right anymore. And that's a sad state of affairs.
Being totally realistic. I have fantastic private insurance and I'm not interested diminishing my private health care for government issue.  It's the one damn thing I have going for me financially -- and I suppose I feel the same way about my health care as parents and home owners feel about their tax breaks. Hands off.

Oh, how nice for you!  You get the holy grail of health coverage so you aren't concerned for everyone else.
Medicare and Medicaid are far less complicated and half the nightmare of private sector insurance.  I don't know what your experience is, but I bill insurance, both public and private, and it's a literal no-brainer.

My experience is that I'm a caregiver for my very ill mother. Every time I turn around, Medicare is rejecting payment for basic things that old, sick people need because of some rule or another. Social workers give me wrong, conflicting answers at every turn, with the most recent example unexpectedly costing my family a whopping 10,000 bucks.

I do care very much about people. It's a lazy, tired argument to accuse people of being greedy and selfish just because they have faith in private enterprise. I would never say the private system is perfect. It is a tangled web. But when I compare how easy and simple my own cancer treatment was (paid by a private PPO) compared to my mother's end-of-life care through Medicare/Kaiser Advantage -- it's a fucking no-brainer to me as to which I prefer. I hope to hell when I'm old and dying that I do not have to depend on the federal government to help me.
Yeah, I just don't understand this at all.
It is universally accepted to be the opposite within healthcare industries.
I never expect you to understand anyone's point of view except your own.

Now, back to thread integrity. About those children of yours that you expect me to subsidize--maybe if you paid your "fair share" of taxes, we'd all be better off.
Since a lot of people pay more in taxes than we do, your logic says we’re all being subsidized.

YES!!  You wouldn't believe how many times I have tried to get people to understand this.

Unless you are a millionaire that actually pays income tax you are a "taker."

This country would be so much better off if we ignored the GOP mantra on taxes.  We should be increasing taxes on the wealthy to close the budget deficit each year.  Income tax should be like real estate tax....you figure out how much you need to operate and then assess tax on available income.

That would get our defense budget back in check real quick.

Do you have kids in college?  I do.  This bill hits me in two places.  Deductions will be reduced for me substantially, but it will be exacerbated next year with the loss of student loss interest being deductible.  Double wammy.

Seriously, let's vote these idiots out:

In an astonishing defense of dropping “death taxes” for individual estates worth more than $5.5 million, GOP Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley implied that people not currently affected by that tax are “spending every darn penny ... on booze or women.”

“I think not having the estate tax recognizes the people that are investing — as opposed to those that are just spending every darn penny they have, whether it’s on booze or women or movies,” Grassley told the Des Moines Register in an interview published Saturday. Grassley, who serves on the Finance Committee, made the remark when asked about the Senate tax reform measure which would double the exemption for estates to $11 million for an individual and $22 million for a couple. Heirs would inherit the estates tax-free.

Grassley’s comment triggered a wave of criticism on social media. Many complained that the working class is, in fact, spending “every darn penny” on raising their kids, caring for elderly parents, health care and putting food on the table. One Twitter user complained that the GOP was turning America into a version of “The Hunger Games.”

I guess if you base your opinion only on your taxes it might be a good thing...mine will likely go down a little but if they repeal the insurance mandate I will likely pay a lot more for insurance....we ALL will

Yes, and when their taxes increase and their health insurance premiums increase, they will blame anyone but the Republicans.

In case anyone is wondering how big a scam job this is:

37 of 38 economists said the GOP tax plans would grow the debt. The 38th misread the question.

Paul Ryan and Senator Rob Portman released a joint letter signed by 137 economists endorsing the tax overhaul. Unfortunately, their math is off again. The Intercept investigated the names that appear on that letter, and not everyone on there is really an economist. In fact at least one person seems to not exist at all.

    treasury analysis!

    It basically says two things:

    • The analysis from the Joint Committee on Taxation is correct.
    • Tax revenue will rise if we assume 2.9 percent economic growth.

    http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2017/12/the-missing-treasury-analysis-of-the-republican-tax-plan-has-finally-been-released/

There are three key angles to this, and let’s start with the substance of the Treasury’s document. Congressional Republicans and the Trump administration have sworn up and down that the GOP’s tax package would pay for itself, ignoring the conclusions of every independent analysis, including data from Congress’ own Joint Committee on Taxation.

The Treasury Department argued this morning that the Republican promise will prove to be true if (a) we assume that the regressive tax breaks supercharge the economy; and (b) policymakers also agree to pass Trump’s non-existent infrastructure plan, Trump’s non-existent welfare reform plan, and wait for Trump’s regulatory reform plan to work wonders.

In other words, the Trump administration is conceding that Republicans are wrong about one of the core promises of the party’s own tax plan. The Treasury effectively declared this morning, “The tax plan will pay for itself if everyone agrees to pass a bunch of other proposals, which haven’t been written, and which have nothing to do with the tax plan.”

Second, let’s not skip past that “welfare reform” tidbit too quickly. Trump’s Treasury Department is now saying, in writing, that Republicans can pay for tax breaks for the wealthy, not only by raising taxes on the middle class, but by cutting benefits to the nation’s most vulnerable. The document is describing class warfare at its most depraved – taking money from food-stamp beneficiaries, and giving it to millionaires.

And third, the entire Treasury Department analysis literally fits on one page. If we exclude the headline, the document isn’t quite 400 words.

What the Trump administration released this morning isn’t an analysis of tax legislation; it’s a joke.

    1. No office in the Treasury Department is willing to go on record as having written this one-page document.

    2. No official in the Treasury Department is willing to go on record as having written this one-page document.

    3. Not even Steven Mnuchin has put his name on this one-page document.

Some people think we're just like Republican voters...incapable of drawing our own conclusions or integrated disparate pieces of information.  It struck me last night as I was watching Bannon speak... he really thinks/knows that his base is stupid and he continues to insult them with his rhetoric.  Some people around here try the same shenanigans.
  • Like suggesting monopolies are bad for the consumer? Like most on here didn’t know that?

    look it up...

When Texas Sen. John Cornyn slipped an obscure tax break for pipeline giants into the GOP tax bill, he wasn't just helping major Republican Party donors, he was also potentially helping 16 of his congressional colleagues. Together those 16 lawmakers — 13  Republicans, 3 Democrats — own multimillion-dollar stakes in the special investment vehicles that stand to benefit from Cornyn’s amendment.
