Re: LP Box Set Numbering

Statement from Sony Music regarding Pearl Jam Vinyl Box Set Numbering:

"Regarding the LP box numbering.

A total of 500 units were to be numbered for sales on pearljam.com.  An additional 100 units were to be manufactured for label and band use and not to be sold or numbered. However, due to a manufacturing error, these additional units were also numbered, packaged and delivered.  We were unaware of this manufacturing error before we began shipping orders and apologize to the fans who received a number greater than 500."

What a joke, i love it how big companies can screw up and just say ooops sorry. How can they not have known.

So 600, I would assume since we are seeing numbers above 500 in consumers hands that the first 100 would be for label and band use.

Or I wonder if they just randomly pulled numbers?

I read this as 1-500 were supposed to be sales on here. 501-600 were supposed to be kept back for the band but somehow got sold as well and were shipped out.

Yea, maybe. So 600 were sold? They didn't keep any back for label and band use? What numbers are they auctioning off?

Its all a joke, Sony stated that 1-500 were to be numbered and sold and another 100 were to be unnumbered and not sold. So how were the 100 to be any different than however many empty boxes were sold?  Mysteriously they accidentally numbered 600 and sold them all. Who knows how many they actually made. This whole thing is a debacle.

Do the ones they are auctioning off even have a COA in them? I haven't been following it. If not they could have some empty boxes left over and just put together the package without it. If it does have a COA I would be curious too what number it is. Also I have yet to see a 0-99 number so maybe my theory is wrong.
  • It seems to me that 600 were numbered by mistake. This info would have never made it out if they were inspected upon delivery.  If inspected, pull out #501-600 and use those for band and promo uses.  PJ nuts still get there precious #1-500 and never know anything different.

I'm reading it as of the 500 sold and shipped to customers, you may receive a number higher than 500.  And if you do, that's why.  Not that all 600 were sold to customers.

They probably just pulled out a random 100 boxes from the pallet - who knows if they are packed in order - and set them aside for band/label/promo use.

I doubt 10C sold over 500 of these, since that was the intent.

I assume delivered to 10club, not customers. No?  Surely 10club got their 100, just incorrect numbers.

I like the insight it gives us to how much the 10c overruns when producing something.  In this case 20% overrun for family/friends/auctions etc...

This is exactly how I read this statement. Just like how they made more than 2000 Benaroya sets, it's very common. They were accidently numbered and mixed rather than being kept separate. The explanation was as clear as it needed to be IMO.

I think I saw someone post a photo of theirs and it was actually more than 500 out of 500. So, say, 525/500. Can't remember if the person posted here on the boards or on facebook.

I don't even see why it would affect the flippers. Why would it affect the price? Has anyone expressed discontent about this? What difference does it make? Will collectors actually say "oh no thanks, the number is higher than 500."? Will the over-500 boxes actually have a lower dollar value in the secondary market??

If it was a poster or limited edition vinyl (not box but vinyl itself) I would be more upset.  I got one of these boxes and I don't really care that they ran an additional 100.  I never bought this as an item I expected to be valuable or highly collectible, never really got the vibe that it would be that kind of thing.  I don't really think a refund is warranted here.
