Avocado remix is on Tidal (not the HD version, but standard lossless). Listened to two songs and my ears got tired of the compression. Sounds horrible.

Hmmm I saw this too in my Friday morning emails - is the 2017 mix of Avocado a thing? Do I need a purchase?
I welcome any opinions, Team. Cheers.

I can already tell the difference on Life Wasted. Guitars and drums are pulled out more and less muddy.

Is the Avocado remix worth $24.99?

It does seem like they raised Stone and Jeff's levels, but toned down McCready :( very noticeable on Severed Hand and Inside Job. Vocals are a lot cleaner.

For a DR of 5... to me that's a BIG no. But its your money.

There's also a 44.1kHz/24bit version for $17.99. I should have put it in my original post, but you can also get 15% off with coupon code HD10NOV. If you get on the HDtracks email list, there are times where they have a 20% off storewide coupon.

I will agree with the sentiment that the new mix is less harsh on the ears.

    @darthvedder thanks for posting.

saved me a good chunk of money. high res only allows the music to sound better if the band lets it.
lots of dynamic compression = person who yells ALL the time
    versus ...
minimal dynamic compression = person who sometimes speaks quietly, sometimes speaks normally and sometimes yells. when they yell, you really pay attention. but when a person yells all the time your ears hurt and you tune them out.

i get it though ... dynamically compressing the crap out of music is better for "noisier" situations when people aren't giving full attention to the music (parties, headphones while walking or at the gym, in the car, etc.) how many people do you know that just sit and listen to the music with no distractions and no other noise? very few people listen to music like that anymore.

if i could push a magic button, i'd want bands to do two mixes/masterings: (1) for mainstream listening and (2) for the few people who want to get really involved with the music and pay full attention to it and are willing to pay a few extra bucks for the effort that goes into this type of mix/master in a high res format.

Maybe it's my headphones but I can barely hear the solo/riff during the intro of inside job, same with the piano.

That's what I noticed too. I even thought Eds vocals sounded re recorded until I did a comparison with the original. Seems to be the pattern all across the remix; muted lead guitar part. Really changes the songs.

Just picked up both of these and so far the "Pearl Jam 2017 Mix" is spectacular to my ears.  I really think those DR numbers are skewed to 16 bit recordings.  24 offers a bigger sound stage.  It's just my two cents, but so far so good.  Listening to "Marker in the Sand" now, and it is remarkably better than the CD version.  Then again, I always thought this was the worst sounding CD they ever made, so there was only room to improve it.

Agreed on Marker. That and Gone were the two tracks that stood out in the new mix.

Gone sounds no better to these ears. It's weak sauce, and I'm still a bit salty that they ever made a full band version of a perfectly acceptable Ed solo song.

Apart from that, I like the new mix. WWS, Severed Hand, Marker, Come Back, and Inside Job sound remarkably different.

noticing a lot of the 24 bit 44k stuff of late (can we even hear a difference between 44/96/128 etc?), are the bands and record companies already getting lazy on HD stuff?  Master of Puppets finally came out, the DR is closer to 8/9 on their analysis...which as far as those numbers go is pretty mediocre......

I guess in the end listen yourself numbers aside, and if it sounds better it is worth it, if not, then dont buy it

It seems like they dulled the whole album. Its probably my third favorite, but this reissue lost the bite.
