Totally crushed by this news. Heard of it the day it happened. Just saw him in Seattle not knowing that would be the last time.

    RIP

The thing that excited me though, is that news that came out a year or two ago.   That Wildflowers was originally recorded as a double album, but got released as a single album.  A few songs got retooled and made it onto the she's the one soundtrack, but there's basically a whole album from my favourite era of tom petty and no ones heard it.

News articles kept indicating it was going to get released and be called "all the rest".  In fact digitally release a single from it a while ago, but no release date has ever appeared :(

I've been waiting ages on this and scour sources every couple of months to always be disappointed.

I'm still having trouble digesting this news even though we are 3 days past the fact. It just doesn't seem fair. 66 years is not long enough for this special soul. For those of us 40 years and older it seems to be even harder to accept. I saw him 9 times over the last 22 years, including the greatest highlight: the co-headlining gig in July of 2006 at the Pepsi Center in Denver with our beloved Pearl Jam. The duet that night EV did on The Waiting, was simply magical. TPATH was always a great evening out at a show. You never had to worry if he was going to play a hit that maybe you loved; he always did. And it was always the largest sing-a-long when those hits came on. It was great. I know most of us love the PJ style where each night is different setlist. And I do too. But TPATH didn't really do that anymore. But damn I didn't care. Play the hits! Give me my moneys worth and send me home happy! That was a Petty show. And fuck, I will miss those nights. Thank you Tom. Thank you for that amazing live arena rock you delivered 9 times to me. You will be missed.

I echo your sentiments as TP has been an integral part of rock and roll for decades and it just feels weird not having him around.
Take solace in the fact that you saw him live so many times. I saw him for the first and last time in 2013 as I finally woke up and realized that he was getting older and may stop touring soon and could not bare the fact of not seeing him at least once. I took my 20 year old daughter and she told me the other day it was one of her favorite concerts ever. Just Tom Petty inspiring another generation. RIP!

Life is so precious - and incredibly fragile. You just never know when it's someone's time to go.
Thank you, Tom, for leaving for us such a legacy of beautiful songs. May they spin forever. They will on my turntable.

^ that's so cool. I swear that every tribute and cover I've seen this week dedicated to Tom has given me chills. Even acts that I hope to never hear another note from. Great tributes all around.

I never owned a TP album but saw him live twice in the last 10 years.  I'm really appreciating his influence.  He was one of a kind.

The key to any good Running Down A Dream cover is the quick acoustic strum in the chorus. So subtle but 1,000% perfect.

Got this at the shows in St Paul in 06 when PJ opened.  Such great shows, the whole arena sang every word to all his songs. He certainly impacted American culture with his music. Gone too soon!

Hard to believe it's been one year since TP's passing. Playing Wildflowers in full at office in remembrance. Missing him from afar. RIP, Tom.

I HIGHLY recommend the new Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers "An American Treasure" 4-CD box set that just came out. I've been listening to it since the weekend (and as we speak) and it really helps salve the pain. Tom's great songs will live forever!

I love Petty.  Mike Campbell is one hell of a good guitarist.  I really enjoy his style and he helped to create TP's sound.  Interesting that he's joined Fleetwood Mac.

Got my American Treasure CD in the mail today.  Will be listening tomorrow on my way to work.  I miss this guy so much and so grateful got to see the Heartbreakers before he passed.

For you into biographies, I'm reading the Warren Zanes one called Petty and it's fantastic.  Petty is interviewed throughout and early stuff on Sundowners, Epics and family life in Gainesville.  Highly recommended.
