Vitalogy Vinyl - Original 1994 vs 2011 Repress?

mwplummwplum Posts: 1,509
For anyone who has both, is there a noticeable difference in sound between the two? When it came out back in 1994, I lined up outside A&B Sound on a snowy night to get the CD, but unfortunately wasn't into vinyl then and have since bought the repress back in 2011. I have the chance to get a 1994 now for only $30 CAD, and it's a little beat up but plays without pops/skips. I'm thinking I'll get it, but was just interested if there was a noticeable difference as I saw a comment by one member in another thread regarding the sub-par quality of the 2011. Thanks in advance.

The consensus here seems to be that the original is better than the reissue. I am of the minority opinion that the reissue sounds better.

For $30.00, you should definitely get the OP and know for sure with your own system and ears.

    Good luck!

I did a comparison with a friend. He brought over the original and I had the reissue. I preferred the his and he preferred mine.

Huge difference. As I remember the original sounded more raw.  Reissue definitely cleaner and refined.

Def go with the OG.  I'm in the camp of the originals all sound better than the reissues (except yield which sounds fine as a repress). No code is a toss up I think the repress sounds as good, but I don't want no stinkin' alternate lyrics.

Hey op I was just thinking- one area of definite difference is that the OG is only one disc but the repress is 2.  If you aren't lazy then it doesn't matter but my fat American ass prefers 1

I prefer the original.    Something about the mix/mastering on the originals sound better to my ears.  Plus it's not buried inside of a box.    It's probably only 30 seconds to deal with the box, but the lazy part of me goes for the original as a result.

I actually think the Vitalogy reissue sounds like total shit. The Original sounds good.

Reissue of vitalogy sounds muddy as hell, like listening to it with several towels wrapped around your speakers.
Go for the OG...sounds much better and there are tons out there to buy.

My original sounds exactly as you'd expect a record to sound after constant playing for 20+ years, but I still prefer it to the reissue.

There's a 2016 re-press released in Europe that sounds a whole lot better than the 2011 versions. Also one exists for VS.

Without having all three to listen to this is hard to say.  I know I recently purchased the 2011 pressing and it sounds fine.  That being said a friend of mine purchased the vinyl release in 1994 and that too I remember sounding quite good.  I listen to my original pressings of Ten, VS, No Code, Binaural and Riot Act quite a bit recently.  They all sound very good.  Particularly No Code and Binaural.
