Wisconsin Company to Implant Microchips in Employees

Not mandatory yet but someday?  Would you do this now?  Would you do this if required to keep your job?

http://kstp.com/news/wisconsin-company-to-implant-microchips-in-employees-three-square-market/4549459/

A Wisconsin company is about to become the first in the U.S. to offer microchip implants to its employees.

Yes, you read that right. Microchip implants.

"It's the next thing that's inevitably going to happen, and we want to be a part of it," Three Square Market Chief Executive Officer Todd Westby said. The company designs software for break room markets that are commonly found in office complexes.

Just as people are able to purchase items at the market using phones, Westby wants to do the same thing using a microchip implanted inside a person's hand.

"We'll come up, scan the item," he explained, while showing how the process will work at an actual break room market kiosk. "We'll hit pay with a credit card, and it's asking to swipe my proximity payment now. I'll hold my hand up, just like my cell phone, and it'll pay for my product."

More than 50 Three Square Market employees are having the devices implanted starting next week. Each chip is about the size of a single grain of rice.

Along with purchasing market kiosk items, employees will be able to use the chip to get into the front door and log onto their computers.

Each chip costs $300, and the company is picking up the tab. They're implanted between a person's thumb and forefinger. Westby added the data is both encrypted and secure.

"There's no GPS tracking at all," he said.

No one who works at Three Square Market is required to get the chip implant.

I saw this article the other day and shared it with my employees. Its a bit too much for me at this point. I can definitely see this being our future though and it's kind of scary to think about it. A chip for food purchases is just the beginning. Imagine going to a grocery store where the food is all secured until you scan you hand over it to purchase it. No more need for human employees except for minimal stocking and delivery (which could also be replaced). I envision this getting closer and closer to replicant status. Funny that Bladerunner 2049 is coming out soon.
    It's a hopeless situation...

Almost everyone carries a much more powerful device in their pocket voluntarily, so I don't see what the big deal is.

This technology  isn't  new. It's  been used in Europe for a couple of years now and is totally voluntary.
But Rgambs is correct about the tracking device in your pocket.

Where's the religious zealots on this? I get flyered all the time about how the microchip implant is the mark of the devil and the beginning of a New World Order without god. All Obsma's fault. Plus, I heard he and Hillary are major investors in this company.

But once you have it, it's there until you either find someone to remove it or dig it out yourself. No way to get away from it. Surely that's a material difference.

I agree we're likely headed in the direction of people wanting to do this for "convenience", but that's a concerning prospect. And the idea that people would be willing to get microchipped simply to make it easier to buy junk food in a break room??

    Agreed on both points, often.

Takes a few extra seconds to pay with cash or debit card.  I'll take that route, thank you very much.

Would never do it. I always keep my location services off, siri off, and don't have the big social media accounts. I enjoy privacy and often leave my phone at home. Never would I let any body put a device inside me.

I hope you realize that nefarious parties can do literally almost anything they want with your phone remotely, regardless of what settings you use.  Anything they can't do, they will soon.

Yes, you're right. It is possible to take steps o deter the average privacy invasion but not a really determined and skilled one.

But no one can force you to carry it with you. Yet.

I have no problem giving up my phone if I ever feel that I need too. The difference is that I can toss this in the trash any time. A chip buried inside me? Not so easy. I say FUCK THAT.

I can see some cool benefits to this kind of thing, but my main concerns are 1) privacy, obviously - they'd need to bend over backwards to convince me that there isn't something big brothery going on with it, and 2) these seem to put the person who's implanted at risk. I worry about hands being chopped off and shit. If this kind of thing becomes the norm and everyone pays for everything with the chip, wouldn't criminals just start murdering people or lopping off body parts in order to use other people's chips? Remember the eyeball thing in Minority Report? I think it might be a good thing that cards and phones can just be stolen. It's safer.

I wouldn't get one either, but the thought doesn't bother me much.  There's no hiding or privacy in this modern world, I guess I've just accepted it.
I also don't fear that it will become mandatory.

I suppose if I had severe dementia and they wanted to chip me in case I went wandering that would be OK.  In other words, I would have to be out of my mind to do this!

Yes, actually GPS chips are a fantastic idea for children or senile seniors who wander. I would fully support that kind of thing, assuming there was a law about when it had to be removed from the children. I would say that 13 years old would be a good time for removal.
