Stabbing or beating someone to death is much more personal and takes much more coldness than shooting someone. I'd be willing to bet that if you eliminated guns, you'd see the murder and suicide rates drop precipitously. Guns make both much too easy. Not that I'm advocating for the elimination of guns, mind you.

The truth on the first statement looks more like "people can be aggressive and impulsive, and if they have access to a gun, they're more likely to kill or injure someone". Even planned attacks where it's hard to get firearms have fewer deaths.

There's no question that it's easier to kill large numbers of people with firearms than with pretty much any other weapon that is available to the general public. You might really want to kill someone, or many someones, but realistically your chances of carrying it out successfully are far lower without guns.

Guns make me safer from hunger.  Still chowing down on the deer that a gun helped me harvest last winter :)
No one is gonna take your hunting rifle, don't worry. But there is this thing called the supermarket that doesn't require a gun to keep you safe from hunger.

Totally agree with all those statements. And I guess you could classify that statement as more defensive, than denial. It kind of holds truths on both sides of the argument. But like you said Halifax, guns are the easiest choice

He is... if we're still living in the 1790's.

But this is 2017 and the government has drones.  You don't take a knife to a gun fight and expect to win.  I'd say the same follows for bringing guns to a drone fight.

If the troops were out to "protect our freedoms" they would be in DC, not the Middle East.

DC terrorists would not only make ISIS, but make ISIS scared.

I said chances are lower. It's far harder to build and successfully blow up a pressure cooker bomb than it is to grab a gun, walk out the door, and mow people down. And thus, we have far more deaths from guns than pressure cooker bombs. That really doesn't even need to be explained.

Agree about the quality of meat.  Nothing like a stew with fresh deer meat or some pepper bologna. Just saying it's not required.  And no, not from my understanding should you be worried about anyone taking your belongings, especially the government or any democrat in it.

Not saying I'm scared of being somewhere where a mass shooting happens, (but I'm way more observant for places to take cover and exits now) but the more these damn things occur the more I think I should have a concealed pistol!

in Texas though I kind of assume that there's so many guns in people's trucks and waste bands that there's a lower chance of a mass shooting because the place would end up like a western movie the moment the dude pulled out his AR.

anyone else concerned though, these are happening ALL THE TIME NOW!

If you think about it, not much about people has changed since the old west.
Still a struggle between good and bad.
Political fights, and mentally ill people killing for who knows what, and of course greed and conquest.  The flip side would be protection, and or justice.  News about the events, or shootouts just travels much faster now.  People use to have to wait weeks or months for news to travel.  Now of course news travels in seconds.  Except for the huge advances in technology, nothing has changed much.  We still have The Good, The Bad & The Ugly amongst us.
And if you look at any of those old grainy family portraits from the old days.  Standing in front of the covered wagon, or a stone cabin, everyone is holding a long rifle & or pistol in the holster.  Guns in hand was part of the  photo.  Women too.

These only include what we currently consider to be a mass shooting under current laws and reporting. I think these numbers would be much different if we were able to find data on the shootings of minorities and Native Americans in those early 1900's decades. If a slave owner shot several of their slaves for whatever reason, that wasn't a mass murder/shooting and neither was sanctioned killings of Native Americans by early pioneers.

It's hard to compare completely different eras when laws, customs and cultural norms were so vastly different. Either way, we definitely have a problem and it goes way back.
    It's a hopeless situation...

That, and the population has grown significantly since 1900.  More people=more crazy.  Do not have time to do the research, but I wonder how the numbers of justified self-protection shootings have changed since 1900...or just crime rates in general.

It probably has nothing to do with the huge shift in NRA policy during the late 60's / early 70's

“We do think that any sane American, who calls himself an American, can object to placing into this bill the instrument which killed the president of the United States,” NRA Executive Vice-President Franklin Orth told Congress shortly after Lee Harvey Oswald shot and killed President John F. Kennedy

“There’s no reason why on the street today a citizen should be carrying loaded weapons,” said California Gov. Ronald Reagan in May 1967, after two dozen Black Panther Party members walked into the California Statehouse carrying rifles to protest a gun-control bill. Reagan said guns were “a ridiculous way to solve problems that have to be solved among people of good will.”

If we can't come together and agree that there is no legitimate reason for citizens to have unrestricted access to weapons that fire hundreds of rounds per minute, we have no hope of solving any firearm related problems.
