Description: 1961 (est.) western-orange Gretsch “Chet Atkins 6120” single-cutaway hollow-body electric guitar, serial #39317. Front/back/sides of body are factory Gretsch western-orange in color, with aged double-bound pinstripe binding on front and rear edges of body. Two aged single-bound F-holes - one each on upper and lower bout of body front. Back of C-shaped neck and headstock are factory Gretsch western-orange in color. Front of headstock is black in color (likely refinished), with aged single-pinstripe binding around front edge, and an inlayed Gretsch company logo. Ebony fingerboard with mother-of-pearl dot inlays, white fingerboard edge binding, and a graphite nut. Two gold Gretsch “Filter’Tron” electro-magnetic pickups with gold plastic surrounds; gold Grover Gretsch-style “stair step” tuners; gold Gretsch ‘G’ knobs; gold Gretsch pickguard; two Gretsch-style strap buttons. Guitar is fitted with a vintage nickel “Gretsch V” Bigsby tremolo, and chrome Tune-o-matic bridge with graphite saddles. Gretsch Mfg. Co. (Brooklyn, NY.) label with serial number is mostly intact inside the guitar’s body. Vintage 60s-era charcoal-grey hardshell case with plum colored interior lining. Exterior of hardshell case has a yellow gaffer tape label, per the Pearl Jam ownership/labeling system, containing a handwritten description and serial number of the guitar (albeit incorrectly displaying the date of manufacture as ‘1965’). Guitar comes with the original (to Stone’s ownership) aluminum bridge/saddle assembly, and Stone’s personal black leather guitar strap. Stone Gossard has owned and played this guitar for 15-20 years.
Condition/Modifications: For the Pearl Jam fan/collector, this guitar - from the personal collection of Stone Gossard - is a rare, mixed opportunity… A legitimate, longtime owned, game-used vintage (and iconic) Gretsch ‘Chet Atkins 6120’ hollow-body electric guitar in excellent structural and playing condition, further enhanced as a piece of Pearl Jam memorabilia by the inclusion of Stone’s guitar strap and the addition of all five current band member's signatures (Stone Gossard, Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament, Mike McCready and Matt Cameron - signed in March 2017). It’s a foundational piece of Stone’s professional music history.
As far as vintage guitars collectors are concerned, this one grades out around 60-65 (“Good”) on the 100 scale. At the time of Stone’s purchase (circa late-90s), the guitar required some significant love to make it playable. It had been modified from it’s original state before Stone’s purchase, and it subsequently was modified further during Stone’s ownership. Any/all major repairs or upgrades to this guitar (during Stone’s ownership) were performed in the late-90s by Pearl Jam’s longtime Seattle-area master luthier, Mike Lull (Mike Lull Custom Guitars). The result has been a structurally sound and stable guitar that plays to the high standards all Pearl Jam instruments are maintained. As a professional musical group, all of Pearl Jam’s guitars/basses - new or vintage - are expected to be “players”, not un-played museum pieces.
FINISH: The western-orange paint is factory original. The finish is generally in very good condition with no post-factory finish overspray, and only normal wear marks and finish checking. Front of the body has two small unfinished dowel holes where the previous (non-original aluminum) bridge’s mounting screws secured to the body. The backside of the headstock also contains several small, visible tuner screw holes - some of which have been previously doweled and colored (from former owners of the instrument), and others that are small open holes. (For one other unfinished doweled hole on the body surface, see the “Neck” section for more details.) No belt buckle wear on the back of the guitar’s body.
The face of the headstock appears to have been refinished (by a previous owner) in black. The inlayed Gretsch headstock logo is intact, but appears to have been “etched” out of the refinished area.
BINDING: All body and headstock binding is factory original. In general it's in good/very good condition, UV-aged to a light yellow hue and shows normal wear/aging. Only minor shrinkage in a few places. The fingerboard binding has been replaced, as have the binding “caps” on the neck heel.
NECK: At the time of Stone’s purchase, the neck was no longer sitting at the correct pitch, making the guitar’s playing action difficult, which required a neck reset. The neck was removed, pitch corrected and remounted. This process required a 1/2” hole be drilled in the lower bout-side of the neck pocket, where it was then doweled but left unfinished and is visible. Relative to the rest of the guitar, this area around the neck pocket has the most cosmetic damage to the finish and binding.
The back of the neck shows/feels only minor wear and/or finish checking. The original ebony fingerboard has been fully replaced - hence the non-standard dot inlay instead of the original Gretsch “thumbnail” markers of the era. While replacing the fingerboard, the Gretsch “zero fret” and standard brass nut were eliminated, and the original fingerboard binding was replaced (in white). A graphite nut was added along with a full re-fret. The current nickel frets and ebony fingerboard are both in excellent condition. (Original frets, brass nut, ebony fingerboard and/or thumbnail marker inlays are not included with the guitar.)
The headstock has never been broken.
ELECTRONICS: The two Gretsch “Filter’Tron” pickups are original to the guitar (at time of Stone’s purchase) and work/sound/look great. Both plastic pickup surrounds are in excellent condition and have all mounting screws. All potentiometers (3 - lower bout and lower horn) and toggle switches (2 - upper horn ONLY) have been replaced, but Gretsch ‘G'-style knobs and brass switch caps are original to the guitar and show average cosmetic wear/oxidation. The 1/4” output jack has been replaced, and a non-standard square brass jack plate was added. All electronics are fully functional.
HARDWARE/ADORNMENTS: The nickel “Gretsch V” Bigsby tremolo is original to the guitar, shows minor cosmetic wear, and is fully functional. The original (at time of Stone’s purchase, and included with the guitar) aluminum compensated bridge assembly was removed and replaced with a modern, chrome Tune-o-matic bridge assembly (with graphite saddles), requiring two new holes to be drilled into the guitar’s top. This trade-off was performed for increased bridge stability when using the Bigsby tremolo and the ability to accurately intonate the instrument.
The guitar’s gold Gretsch pickguard is original (at time of Stone’s purchase) to the guitar, but is unlikely the guitar’s factory original pickguard. The current pickguard is in good condition and contains the Gretsch logo in black, but does not contain the Chet Atkins signature that was standard for this model.
The headstock face contains the Gretsch logo (see comments above in “Finish” section), although the headstock face is missing the other adornments that typically accompanied this model, such as an inlayed horseshoe or screwed-on badge plate.
The guitar’s non-original tuners (at the time of Stone’s purchase) were replaced with the current gold Grover Gretsch-style “stair step” tuners. (Previously replaced tuners are not included with the guitar.)
Any guesses on what it goes for? Definitely over $50,000. I'd say $100,000 may not be out of sight. This is an iconic piece that belongs in the Rock Hall of Fame.
