  • Was very happy to see this announcement. Love his writing and the podcast. Discovered it late so I'm way behind, only through 1/3 of the episodes. Will definitely be skipping ahead when the PJ series starts.

The Celebration Rock Podcast: Our Seven-Part Series on Pearl Jam Begins By Delving Into ‘Ten’
    Steven Hyden

Welcome to The Celebration Rock Podcast, a weekly talk show hosted by Steven Hyden about the past, present, and future of rock music.

Next month, Pearl Jam will be inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. To mark this momentous occasion, we’re excited to launch Vitalogy-alogy, our seven-part series on the history of one of America’s biggest and most fascinating bands.

Our purpose is to answer one question: How did Pearl Jam survive? In the early ’90s, Eddie Vedder was the biggest young rock star in the world — in the wake of Ten‘s success, he was even more popular than his erstwhile rival, Kurt Cobain. And it practically happened overnight — when the video for “Jeremy” debuted on MTV in the fall of 1992, sending Ten into the stratosphere, it was barely two years after Pearl Jam’s first rehearsal. The way that Pearl Jam reacted to that sudden fame informs the narrative of the band’s entire career. Decades before they were feted by the Rock Hall, Pearl Jam had to figure out what kind of band they wanted to be as millions of people watched their every move.

For our episode on Ten, we spoke with journalist Brian Hiatt of Rolling Stone, who got to know the band while profiling them for a 2006 cover story and over many subsequent interviews. We also spoke with Mark Pellington, one of the greatest music-video directors ever, about his experience making the iconic video for “Jeremy.”

Listened to the Ten podcast yesterday...not too bad at all. I had a few distractions while listening so maybe I missed it but I thought they's break down the songs a bit more. The Jeremy director was pretty dead pan.

Were they obligated to go into that much detail about those Blue Apron dinners????

The Celebration Rock Podcast Delves Deep Into Pearl Jam’s ‘Vs.’ And ‘Vitalogy’
    Steven Hyden
    03.20.17

This week on The Celebration Rock Podcast is continuing aseries on Pearl Jam by exploring two of the band’s most famous albums, 1993’s Vs. and 1994’s Vitalogy, in two new episodes.

With Vs., Pearl Jam capitalized on the slow-burn success of its 1991 debut Ten — in just five days, Vs. sold more than 950,000 copies. After touring non-stop in the previous two years, Pearl Jam entered the studio in peak shape, and cranked out some of the most loved songs its career, including “Go,” “Animal,” “Daughter,” and “Rearviewmirror.” With his guest Dave Hartley of the great indie band The War On Drugs, Hyden discusses the impact of Vs. and whether the record holds up nearly 25 years later.

The next Pearl Jam record, Vitalogy, is arguably the most popular album among Pearl Jam fans. A chaotic record that mixes some of Pearl Jam’s most crowd-pleasing material (“Better Man,” “Corduroy”) with some of the band’s weirdest and most discursive tunes (“Bugs” anyone?), Vitality is a chaotic record that reflects a chaotic period in Pearl Jam history. To help make sense of Vitalogy, Hyden spoke with the writer and critic Chuck Klosterman, who considers Vitalogy to be his personal favorite Pearl Jam release.

If you like what you hear, please subscribe to Celebration Rock on iTunes, Audioboom, or Stitcher, and listen below.
