I have tried numerous times to get into this band, but I have yet to be impressed and I have a hard time even sitting through some of the songs.

    I must be missing something.

Have you listened to any of their live shows??

Listen to Kicking Television live in Chicago and you'll be talking a different story..

Same here. I saw them in Chicago last August but have nothing in the future. I did see Son Volt the other day and imagined Jeff standing on stage with Jay.

A surprising number of repeats in the sets, but I am stoked for four nights at the beacon anyway!
  • Get_RightGet_Right Posts: 12,439
Beacon shows have been great so far. Great mix of songs. A bit shorter than past Wilco shows, but man the sound in the beacon is perfect and Jeff sounds great.
  • As someone who know very little to nothing about Wilco (other than they've obviously proven themselves), Can anyone recommend 5 main tracks to get into them and then from those tracks, the easiest album to get into.

I'll hang up and listen to your answers. Thank you.

IMHO, their masterpiece is Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and every song on that album are their main tracks. ;)

I'd listen to their live album, Kicking Television, or if you are in a spendy mood, I'd pay for a live download of a recent show.

I would definitely start with Kicking Television. Then look at the songs you like there and what albums they are on, and go from there. Yankee Foxtrot Hotel and A Ghost is Born are my two fave albums, but I think a lot of Wilco fans differ when it comes to that.

And yes, as Joe said, a live show is always a good bet too.

I'm not sure going straight to live material is the greatest idea for discovering any band. I always felt that it was better to start with the studio stuff and go from there. Live material can be better, but it also tends to require a stronger connection in order to appreciate the live vibe. I would always say wait until you have listened to (and enjoy) some of the studio work and then move on to the live stuff once/if you feel invested enough to explore further.

I agree...The best approach, would be to check out the studio versions of songs that are on wide release live album or greatest hits, which I think Wilco has.

If I was gonna choose the most accessible Wilco albums I'd probably go with Summerteeth and Sky Blue Sky.

I did. It was an excellent setlist. Opened with one of my faves "Radio Cure". and if you hear the bootleg, I am the guy shouting for "Cars Can't Escape". embarrassed myself as the Tennessee Theater has great acoustics. everyone in the place heard me.
