Interesting, that's kind of what I would have expected. I too prefer my bourbon stronger, so I'd kind of written off the special reserve. The gold is pretty fantastic, if you happen to come across it. This is a pretty solid review of it:

Don't be ashamed, feel glad that you've escaped the hype monster. Imagine Pappy as something that's as sought after as a Benny, but is probably as good as a Vault 3. There's a heck of a lot of good bourbons out there just as accessible and without the astronomical secondary market price tag.

Are you a Bourbon guy? If not, I wouldn't necessarily expect you to know what it is. Even people who drink bourbon regularly haven't had a chance to try the Pappy. It's not something you see on the shelf at the store. I've been really into bourbon for about 13 years or so and I've never tried it or even had the opportunity to buy it (at retail). That should change by the end of next year. I'm #2 on the list at a liquor store across the border in Maryland. They got 9 bottles last month, so next year I should be golden.

For those asking about Black Maple Hill, it's still being produced but the source changed a few years ago and it has become overpriced hype junk based on its name. It definitely was once a great bourbon sourced from Kentucky. It's now distilled in Oregon & comes in squat bottles and retails around $70-90. It even says "Oregon Straight Bourbon Whiskey" on the bottle. Stay away from that crap.
I paid $40 for my Kentucky bottle back in '07. It was then rumored to come from Stizel-Weller (distillery that produces Pappy & Buffalo Trace, among others). Whether that's actually true remains unknown, but it was a damn fine bottle of bourbon!

At least you were in the game. I stopped by my liquor store today and found out the owner, his son, and another employee bought the three bottles of Pappy they received.

Picked up a couple bottles of Blantons today. I will probably stash one of them, how long should I hide it?

Nice! I don't really hide my Blanton's away as much as just pulling it out for a drink occasionally. I tend to drink Buffalo Trace as a go to with the Blanton's as a special treat. Let us know what you think!

Blanton's is available from the distillery gift shop, so while somewhat rare to find in one's local liquor store, it's definitely not an investment.

I'd say open a bottle and enjoy it with friends/family over the holidays, and save the other bottle for the spring/summer, but that's just my take. In any event, enjoy!

Should add that I have a friend with some very rare bourbons that is still looking for a Benny. If anyone is looking for some of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, and has a Benny, I can put you in touch.

Since on the topic of Bourbon, I was able to score a bottle of Four Roses Private Selection OBSO 8th Edition. Not sure exactly how this works, but Pennsylvania was only provided with 180 bottles and the label says it was specially selected by Fine Wine & Good Spirits, which is the main provider of spirits in PA. I recall having a discussion with someone awhile ago about Four Roses. Something about their single barrel private selection and how they allow states to opt in to receive it. When they do opt in they are only given a small amount. I'm sure theres a bit of a marketing trick at play here, but either way, its a good bourbon.

None of them look opened. Saving for special occasions? Love the Makers Mark Ambassador gifts from this year. My current bottle is adorned with the last three Xmas gifts (Sweater, Ear Muffs and Mistletoe).

None are opened. I don't drink. , but I love the process of making it, the bottles..Its a weird collection, my wife just goes along with it...

and the Makers Mark marketing department are some of the best... I actually look forward to seeing what gift I get each year. Anytime I am up in KY, I visit as many distillerys as I can, and I always make a point to go there.

Hard to pin point it all in just a couple photos, but here is my downstairs bar and what I keep in the dining room cabinet. Sorry the lighting is bad. All for consumption, when one is gone...I get another.
