What do you want the next album to sound like?

Stone and Jeff contributed My Father's Son and Let The Records play... If you don't care for the newest album, you have to be honest about who is to "blame". BO'B or Eddie shouldn't be shouldering it all, the band is a group and they put 2 albums with similar vibes out, it's not some takeover or trying to gain mass appeal. This is just the music they are making.
And it's good music, whether you like it or not.

obviously everyone wants the band to sound like what they want to sound like. no one wants them to make a fake album. we just want them to want to sound like what we want them to want to sound like. LOL

    Darwinspeed, all.

I think they are stuck with BoB. Remember in PJ20 book the hissy fit he took when he found out they were going with a different producer?

i just want to hear something that sounds really good and makes me want to listen to it over and over again.

Pop get's a bad name in the rock world for not being cool and overly commercial. But looking back on it, that's exactly what albums 1 to 3 were, clever pop disguised as 'alternative' or 'grunge'. its all about the hook and melody. that's what i listen to music for.

i don't think it's easy to make a good pop song either. i'm guessing that most of the hits you hear these days come from some very talented people collaborating together and iterating until they come up with something that works.

BoB is good at bringing out the best in the band. But, the band have to want the best as well. With LB, the band clearly weren't that into it. He basically had to suck an album out of them. I consider most of the tracks on the album to be of 'bside' quality. Listenable, but not memorable. Hopefully that wont happen next time.

His 1989-cover album is better than both Backspacer and Lightning Bolt. So I'd be happy if he did one.

  • I think they should get a strong and interesting producer – may it be Rick Rubin, Jack White or whoever – and record an album with great atmosphere (like Riot Act and Binaural) and a nice coherent sound design to it (like Ten).

Backspacer and Lightning Bolt feels more like "a collection of songs" than a coherent album.

  • No more everyone brings it's own songs. Everyone jams in the studio, Eddie writes on top of that. And yes no more O'Brien. Kasper or Albini or Fridmann or Congleton.. Congleton would be great.

YES!!! This would be amazing or I'd like to see Jeff or Stone step up and produce one

Rick Rubin wouldn't be any better than Brendan Obrien. If they continue to work with him, The band needs to box him out a little more in the writing process like they seem to have done vs-yield

Lightning Bolt was their best since Riot Act, IMO. Much more experimental-sounding stuff on there and songs with staying power. I'd like to see them go even further down that road, like Binaural/No Code. Pearl Jam at their darkest and weirdest is best.

Cornell tried the dance/pop thing with Scream... It didnt go so well, and those songs aren't bad acoustic so it just makes me wish I could hear it without all the crap.

As for PJs next. Just want it to be raw. I want to be able to feel it and not just listen to it. Don't overthink it and don't over produce it Sometimes less is more.

Yes, no more cheez, and more experimental. Rougher around the edges than the last 2 albums.

Agreed. I feel like they are mostly in a good emotional place, which is nice, but I'd love the next one to be more raw/edgy.
