Just Breathe seems like a rather happy and content song to me. It's serene, yes, but not sad.

That's a tough one. "The End" immediately comes to mind. "Come Back" and "Man of the Hour" are up there as well.

Have any of you heard Eddie's spoken word piece, "I'm Still Here?" It's so real and desolate, lonely. I was recently listening to "In Hiding" and made the connection between the two pieces. One belief is that Eddie's life was saved by a call from Pete Townshend who ended with the words, "Be sound." Then Ed's lyrics for "In Hiding" focus on being bogged down by life and he says, "Nothing's sound." I've always felt a connection to "In Hiding" because I've felt that overwhelming unhappiness so it felt like a bit of a lightning bolt to connect the two pieces of music.

Never heard this song before. Unreal! Thank you Jen. Just when you think you've seen his best, you find more. Does anyone know when this song was recorded? I gotta get a copy. Would love if it was on a vinyl single or something.

Easy - Come Back. Have somebody you love die and you'll get it. You'll go through all those things he describes. Dreaming about them so vividly, then waking up feeling they're next to you and everything's ok. And then you remember they're gone. Heart wrenching stuff. And not just the lyrics, but the vocals. EV wailing. It's pure, raw emotion.

Fatal, I Got Shit, Come Back, Black, Release... there are many more which could be considered "Sad", but to me their music, even their darker music is filled with Angsty Optimism... so even the songs I might consider "Sad", I find uplifting and hopefull...

That one and Strangest Tribe are perfect when the snow is falling.

It seems to be from around the No Code era. The first time I heard it, I wasn't really listening and I thought it was a demo or a "different word version" of I'm Open.

  • it's tough, the -est. You are all right. I love all those songs. But really if you think about it Betterman should make the list, and definitely Hard to Imagine, but yeah lately Thumbing My Way has been hitting me hard. And Black, wow. When I was young and in college I went through that stage where I was in a band and my single songwriting goal was to write a song that expressed that broken-hearted feeling of being in love with someone who does not love you back better than Black. After 3 years of failure, I knew I needed to hang it up. Tip if you have not done it: on tape or disc, or whatever media you use put Betterman, Nothingman, and Last Exit back to back to back; and think of it as one story.
