I was 2nd deep to the rail between Ed and Jeff

    Venue was 7/8 full

Show was intense. Set was anything but normal, except playing lots of new songs.

Home in Richmond now winding down with wine.

Fucking great show. Jeff seemed particularly happy, FYI.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

  • I've never seen an Encore 1 that made me so envious. Every single song, a masterpiece.

And how many tour debuts were there in this show? A half a dozen at least?

    Unbelievable.

This show had a lot of the intangibles in addition to all the other stuff. The random jams...the crowd chant after sirens was over and ed playing acoustic a bit to it (so awesome)...the fight that stopped down...I was right where security guarded GA and you wouldn't believe the tricks attempted to get in there... On guy charged his way in and security had him pinned to floor in the middle of GA. I was amazed how much ppl were singing to rarities...it was awesome and the band loved it... Arena had great acoustics and ed mentioned it.

Is that the first time Pearl Jam ever played a full band cover of Little Wing?

Great show. I think people are over-reacting about how good the crowd was.

We all need to consider where this band is at. Arguably in their prime on stage...I mean seriously they sound better than ever, all 5 of them.

Sat Stone's side 14 rows up directly next to where the band was coming on and off the stage. THE SETLIST WAS RIDICULOUS. I really wanted Not For You and Breakerfall after not getting them at Brooklyn 2.

EDIT: OMG GRIEVANCE INTO GLORIFIED G was so raw and awesome.

No, not the 1st time. It's one of my favorite tags and I remember going into cardiac arrest in, pretty sure it was Gorge '06, and they played/sang the whole song. Awesome!

OK so a show finally knocked My Morning Jacket at Red Rocks off the top my personal "post-Who-recent-best-show-perch"

Frankly- I think I might have liked this more than PJ20 (my last PJ show)
My "retirement band" delivered 3 hours of sweetness.

    Highlights for me-

    -My all timer- "Rearviewmirror"

-Eddie reprising his reckless youth, swinging on a globe hanging from the ceiling during "Porch".

    -Incredible number of live rarities.

-Three Rock & Roll classic covers : My first "Mother" (Pink Floyd-Eddie & Mike KILLED their parts; "Do you trust your government" got a big crowd shout down) my second "Baba-(They turn up all the lights during this of course - and the crowd is in a frenzy-I will never get tired of seeing this) and finally "Little Wing"- not just the tag!

-Two kids in the rail getting the royal treatment like the 13 y.o. in Worcester.

-All the speculation about the conservative crowds was crazy- The place was intense and rowdy.

-Jeff & Stone got a lot a love tonight, full band bow and all that. At one point Eddie said he would talk about Mike later, but I don't think he ever did!

Every show seems to be a classic- this is ridiculous!

  • Just got home to Northern Virginia. That was my 14th and best show yet. Absolutely amazing set list. "Sad" is one of my absolute favorites and was so glad they played it. I was right on the rail directly in front of Mike, and got props from him and from Ed for my "Bath Tub Gin" t-shirt. I also got to hand Mike one of my band's guitar picks as a thank you. He looked at, looked back at my with a "what is this?" look on his face and I pointed to myself and said "that's me!" He thanked me!!!! Wow.

There was a dude in a wheelchair that made it up to the front behind me about halfway through the show and we moved around to get him on the rail. Mike came over before the encore and gave him a couple of CD's, and Ed handed him a tambourine at the end of the show. Freaking amazing guys.

I met some great folks in the GA line outside, and once we got in. What a great night! Thank you Pearl Jam!!!!!

  • JPJ is a pretty small venue and the first thing I noticed was the sound was very good. Wifey and I sat right by the front of house AV folks and the mix was perfect, you could even hear Boom. And yes, the crowd was great tonight...if you don't believe me, get the boot and listen to us for yourself. I also noticed right away that the band was really tight (except for Whipping which Ed screwed up and they cut short). This was my 8th show (9 if you count Ed solo in DC for the Water on the Road recording) and 15 out of the 35 songs were songs I hadn't heard at a show yet. Only part of the night that I thought could be better (set wise) was Thumbing my Way and Sleight of Hand. That sequence just didn't seem to work. Maybe it's because Thumbing has never been one of my favs and Sleight is a bit on the longer side. It just seemed to me that people used those 2 songs for a piss break and the energy/attention of the crowd was lost. Might of been better to do just one of those 2 tunes and a sing a long like Small Town or dare I say Last Kiss. Anyway, a few of the highlights:

-In my Tree was a nice surprise
-I wasn't crazy about Mind Your Manners at first, but it's way better live, especially with the crowd yelling "MYM!"
-the sing a long tag at the end of Sirens was really cool, I work as a worship leader and it reminded me of some of the spontaneous stuff we do sometimes in a church setting
-the two kids in the front row really were singing every word, and you could tell that that just made Ed's day
-Boom played the Future Days intro on organ (as well as the rest of the song), which seemed to fit more than the piano does on the album...the piano intro just seems out of place/forced, but with the organ not so much
-Mother really showed off Ed's range
-never thought they'd do Big Wave on a Tuesday in Charlottesville 2 records later
-Breath and State were awesome for an encore...still can't figure out why they weren't on Ten

By the way, I went over to one of the light techs around 7:30 and said "excuse me, after the show can I get your copy of the setlist". His reply was that he doesn't get one, instead they send it to his phone. Half an hour later he goes back stage for a bit and comes back to his post holding 2 setlists. He hands one to Kille and puts the other down on his desk. What the hell?!? So after the show, I go up to Kille and ask if I can have her copy of the setlist. She tells me that she doesn't have a copy. What the hell?!? I'm just not cool with lying, you know. I'd rather them tell me no, I can't have the setlist, or no they don't want to give me the setlist. Dont't lie and say you don't have one. Oh well...
  • Fucking Mike McCready walking through the GA section during the Alive solo, never expected to see that!

Been to quite a few shows, PJ20, Spectrum 09 shows, etc. This one might be sitting at the top!

  • I had a two hour drive home to reflect on show. The reflection left me one conclusion. Oh My Fucking God that show rocked! I was GA at the back and I felt like they played to me. I had room to move on all sides because everyone was bunched in the front but the sound was so clear and the sight lines were perfect. Just AMAZING. I can't wait for the bootleg.

My first post..first PJ concert..Im floored on every level..I had not seen a show at JPJ and the venue was awesome..sound was the best I have heard and Ive been to a lot of shows in my 47 years.Forgive me if I ramble a bit but I just got in from the show and I haven't calmed down yet.
Setlist was incredible..Jeremy seemed to be a huge crowd fave..along with countless others..Faithful was just unreal..the entire set just rolled seamlessly together and those 3 hrs went by way to fast..I need this bootleg..
Thanks to Pearl Jam for putting on quite possibly the best show I have ever seen..and the crowd was amazing in my honest opinion..The band sure seemed to thrive on it...

  • Well, this was show #20 for me and hands down it was the best of them all. I'm going to Charlotte tomorrow too and don't see any way they can come close to this. I mentioned several times in various posts that this would be the gem of the tour, not because I was going, but just because they've never played in the area and the venue and everything around it is just beautiful (especially in the fall). I just had a gut feeling that it was going to bring out a special set, even by their standards.

The venue was going nuts the whole time. I was about 2-3 rows back on the floor in front of Stone and you could tell that they were loving every second of it and really locked in. Other than the end of Whipping they absolutely NAILED everything. This was simply one of those shows that you typically just see the bigger places get and feel bad that you may never get something like that, but boy did they ever make up for lost time on this one. When I think about the songs they played in place of the songs I feel like I hear EVERY time such as Even Flow, DTE, Elderly Woman, Better Man, etc... I still can't believe it.

I know everyone thinks their show is the best, but seriously guys, this wasn't just a spectacular setlist. There's a reason they pretty much played every song they considered, which put us at 35 songs and exactly 3 hours. We fucking rocked the joint and they loved us as much as we loved them.

Everyone who wasn't there genuinely should be jealous of those of us who were. :D

    Bravo Pearl Jam. Bravo!
  • What an amazing show. Came from Chicago to visit my aunt and see the show. This was good karma I feel after the downs of my last show (wrigley). Closest I've ever been in ten shows, two rows off the rail between mike and Jeff. If anyone has any cool photos/videos from the show please share! Or email me directly please! <!-- e --><a href="mailto:Tonygustin22@gmail.com">Tonygustin22@gmail.com</a><!-- e -->. Went with my brother and it was his first show, it was great that this was his first. Such a special night all around.

Also when the band was introduced, Jeff was last and the crowd went nuts..Eddie ran over and handed him his bottle..I believe Jeff mouthed " wow" after taking a gulp..not sure if was because of that gulp or the crowds response to him before that gulp.

I lived in Charlottesville from 2000 to 2003. The band toured twice when I lived there, and never played Charlottesville. I always had to drive up to Columbia, MD or Northern Virginia to see them (or down to NC). So they finally play C'Ville & I had to drive down to see them from DC. It was an adventure, and it was well worth the trip.

Tonight's show was my 30th show in almost exactly 22 years, my first show being at CBGB in 1991. After going to BK2, which was phenomenal, and Baltimore, which was surprisingly great, I really didn't expect much from a show in a college town. The place was not sold out. There were at least four sections (the ones right next to the stage on either side) that were empty, and the last rows of the upper sections towards the back were empty as well. There were loads of folks all the way up top toward the back who sat for the vast majority of the concert. Even in Section 114 right by the stage, there were at least a dozen empty seats right before the band took the stage, even in the front two rows! There were ticketmaster folks mixed in with some of the best the fan club seats (why were there people with ticketmaster tickets two rows in front of me? maybe ticket drops from the band, but still...it was weird). I actually thought the crowd was weird. Nothing compared to NYC crowds. But the fan club folks were super amazing. They knew how special this show was.

The band surprised me the entire night. After Pendulum, I was surprised by Release, and then In My Tree! Are you kidding? I usually wait for a song I don't like that much to go to the bathroom, and this show had literally NO songs that I wanted to miss. Not one. That hasn't happened at a show in about 10 years. I was glued to my spot the whole night because the band kept knocking me out with one of the best set lists of any show I've ever been to. It ranks up with PJ20 weekend. Every time I expected something I've seen live a dozen times, they'd pull another rare song out of nowhere. I mean BIG WAVE! WTH? I had *just* been complaining that they save all the ocean/surf songs for the west coast like we don't have an ocean on the east coast or something (yes, people surf in Virginia), and then they totally surprise me with Big Wave. Holy hell.

The set list was fucking ridiculous. Grievance. I Am Mine. Glorified G. Faithfull. Sleight of Hand. BREATH! GAH! SO AMAZING! And Little Wing! After 22 years and 30 shows, Pearl Jam can STILL surprise me. I fucking love it. I'm so happy that I was there for this one.
  • Another little crazy story from my experience...while I was waiting to get in with the rest of the GA crowd in the early I saw the father with the two young boys go off and I figured they had to be going to the washroom so I ran and followed. The father and I talked they were from Texas, nice guy, we went to university hall where he told the boys the legend of Ralph Sampson and we actually all looked at the old arena. Didn't see them after that until they were on stage of course. Very cool shirts they had on, what cool parents. Had to be the night of those kids lives, glad I had a small part of it haha.

Was Little Wing the full song with Ed on vocals, or just a tag?

I was at San Diego 2009 and they played the entire song with Ed and Matt's music teachers on guitar and drums.

THIS THIS THIS!!! I truly believe that at first, 70% of the audience SUCKED, and the band sounded good but lost serious energy onstage between Swallowed Whole and The Fixer. Up front was rockin as always (including those cool boys), and patches of the sides were whooping it up, but I think the band realized they had to do something or the whole show might turn mediocre (which, for PJ, is still vastly better than most bands on a good night).

And do something they did! My read on the energy shift was that they realized the energy exchange with the audience was not 2-way enough to sustain the show, so they turned to each other. This started during Down, and Lawd did they BRING IT on Rearview Mirror!!! I've seen 55ish shows, all since Vs. was recorded, which means I've probably seen RVM live 35ish times. It always rocks, but it was like they just said "Fuck it, let's at least have a good time ourselves" and they just WENT for it!

That started turning the tide, and by the end of the 1st awesome encore, they had won that whole arena over. But it was a struggle!

I think that struggle inspired risk taking, which turned into ashow for the record books. But I think the brilliance started with a weird, mostly sucky audience, not a great one as so many have said.
