    Cinnamon-oil or sticks
Mint-grow the plants around the hills, though mint can be like blackberry bushes/bamboo, it likes to grow
Garlic cloves-peel and toss in the hills

you can also plant chili peppers, thyme, peppermint, basil, rosemary- they don't like the strong smells.

    Do they scream, closet entomologist?

    I don't know...I've never done that-I googled 'natural ant repellent', it's a suggestion.

I've done it. They just move on.
I'm sure my neighbors don't appreciate it.

We had a problem, and just couldn't find the nest, they were taking over the house, so Mr. RK went into the crawlspace and soaked the perimeter with Ortho Home Defense...*poof*

Mix 1 cup of sugar - 1 tablespoon Borax or Muleteam laundry detergent - 1/2 cup water and bring to a boil for a couple minutes
Let it cool and it will thicken

Cover a few shallow dishes jar lids with it.... The ants will eat it and take it back to the nest and feed it to the queen and die.

The only way to stop them how ever you do it is to find the nest and kill the queen.
