I got his new one ("Waking On A Pretty Daze") on Saturday at a small record shop (buy indie, you get shit early!) and have been listening to it all weekend. Fucking great.

Anyone else into this guy? Very underappreciated.

Yeah, I've been really loving him since God Is Saying This To You. Every LP by him is better than the last. I think Wakin is head and heels better than Smoke Ring, which is saying a lot.

    Love the dude.

just picked up his new cd after reading what was posted earlier. played the first two tracks and really liked what i heard. what album should i get next?
  • restlesssoulrestlesssoul Posts: 6,939
Most will say 2011's SMOKE RING FOR MY HALO.

if you want really lo-fi bedroom stuff, get CONSTANT HITMAKER, his debut. It came out the same year the War On Drugs' WAGONWHEEL BLUES came out, which he was a part of at that time. I am unfamiliar with CHILDISH PRODIGY his other LP.

Kurt Vile can't be ignored. Extremely talented. Just a fantastic sound.

I can't recall being this excited for a show in at least a month. ;) But by all accounts, they are incredible live. Shows are sold out in NY and Boston, he's playing small places in Vancouver, I scooped tickets immediately. Can't wait.

Yeah, I'd say Smoke Ring and work (sort of) backwards

    Smoke Ring
    So Outta Reach EP
    Childish Prodigy
    Square Shells EP
    Hunchback EP
    Constant Hitmaker
God is Saying This to You

God is Saying is basically demos and while good, Its best to check out his debut before it. He follows albums up with EPs but in this case check them out after the LPs.

Childish Prodigy was his Matador debut and it was around that point he really found his stride in regards to his song writing. Not to belittle the material that came before it, which is excellent as well. But if you wanted to check him out but want to be conservative about it, look at his 3 Matador LPs. If they don't convince you of his talent, the other 2 LPs and the 3 EPs won't.

    Spot on.

"Smoke Ring For My Halo" was critically acclaimed (and for good reason), and it's much more polished than his other stuff. "Childish Prodigy" is a little dingier (in a good way); there are times his voice sounds like Mick Jagger.

If you're just wanting to get into him, start with "Smoke Ring," then to his new one, then follow up with "Childish Prodigy." You won't be disappointed, and I agree, if you're not into him after these three, you won't be disposed to liking his other, less-polished stuff.

By the way, how awesome is it when, in the first track, right after he sings the lyric "risin' at the crack of dawn, gotta think about what wisecrack I'm gonna drop along the way," the tempo just inexplicably picks up?

    Loving this new album.

After reading this thread yesterday of recommendations, then downloading a track off his new album which I though was brilliant, I went and got Wakin' On A Pretty Daze today. Haven't played it yet but will very soon, excited to hear this guy. The local paper gave the album a 5 out of 5 star review today. :)

Wait...is there a new Deerhunter out too?

I haven't kept up with them much lately. Liked their last album (but didn't love it).

Yeah. It doesn't flow as well as the past couple, but the tunes themselves are good. But not as good as Halcyon.

Dudes I can't wait to listen to the entire "wakin" album, but can't get past the first track, it's so damn good! I think I've started off every single work day this week with this track, love it.
  • I've been a huge Vile fan since his last album, I listened to that a ton. But so far, and I'm still getting into it, this album is good, VERY good. Third time through I listened on headphones. And had some green. The rest is history...lol.

    But this is good stuff.

    Where do I go next?

For Kurt Vile in general? Or on this album. First song flows right into second song...incidentally, "KV Crimes" is my second favorite song on the album.

For Kurt Vile, go to "Smoke Ring For My Halo" and then "Childish Prodigy" in terms of albums.
