In defense of Cincy '06...

I know everyone bitches about this show...shitty setlist, too short, etc, etc... I just want to say that it was one of the best shows I've been to... I hadn't seen the band since that '03 Birmingham show, and to me, it was spot on. No, they didn't play any "rarities", but they seemed "on" to me. Maybe it was just where I was in life, I don't know. My (now ex) husband promised to go with me, since the show was the day before my birthday. And, of course, he bailed. Two hours later, my friend Jess said she would go because she knew how much it meant to me. To this day, I think she may still only know Jeremy and Betterman, but she went and it made my year. So yeah, maybe Cincy wasn't one to go down in the "instant classic" status, but some of us take what we can get, right?! Just throwing my thoughts out there...

Just checked out the set list. Looks kick ass to me. You can't go wrong with the Long Road.

That show was amazing. Don't let a few loudmouths around here tarnish our memories of thiat killer show. They were playing in the building where The Who tragedy had occurred. It struck a raw nerve. Hence the Long Road open, LBC in the set, and Baba in the encore. One of the best versions of Crazy Mary the band has ever played.
I don't give a rats ass about what others say about Cincy 06. To me it was a very strong showing of emotion from the band and I will cherish the bootleg for the rest of my days.
  • I have always wondered what happened in Cincy since I have read so many negative comments about that show.

Check out the Birmingham AL 2003 set list then come talk to me.
Not to mention it was 40 degrees outside.
The show also ended with the "only funny to the band encore" One Note.

I'm sorry, but this is one of my least favorite shows I have been to. It might as well have been played in Camden. I could probably list at least 40 PJ shows that I thought were better. Just my opinion, but I'd guess that most anyone else who has seen a large number of shows to compare with would agree.

Not really because everyone has different opinions on what is good and what is not.

I've like all PJ shows, but plenty I would rank below this one.

I thought the opening set was awesome. I was really, really into the show. The first encore is where I started to lose interest as you had 5 really longer drawn out songs in a row and I was looking for more of the punch, short rocking songs (or at least not five of their longest songs in a row).

    A really good show though.

I asked about this not long ago, and my understanding is that most of the negativity comes from the fact that the Cincy 2003 show (at Riverbend) had been cancelled and couldn't be rescheduled, so people were keyed up, expecting a huge make-up show since the local fans had waited six years to see the band at that point. (I'm not local to Cincinnati; I'm from Louisville, and got to see PJ in Lexington in 03, though I drove up to Cincy for that 2003 show before finding out it was cancelled.) On its own, the Cincy 2006 show was a lot of fun for me. I wound up with great 10C seats (my seniority was just bad enough to put me in the lower bowl seats instead of the floor, but we got the first row of the lower bowl, right on the hockey boards on Mike's side, the closest section to the stage), my best friend and I got our first live "Leash" ever, and the set was mostly uptempo rockers, which is generally where I have more fun at PJ shows.

Dayton's own Bob Pollard was the opening act, which seemed to excite Eddie a bit. The band referenced the Who tragedy of 1979, and the part Roger and Pete played in getting PJ through Roskilde's aftermath (which I heard echoed five years later at PJ20 when Glen Hansard told the story of how he got to know Eddie after his own band's brush with tragedy). They sent out well-wishes (and "Wishlist") to Brian Shaffer, the missing fan from Columbus, and later in the show, Ed augmented a line in "Alive" to "Brian! All of us! We're all still alive!" And Ed wiped his ass with the Rolling Stone magazine he'd just been on the cover of (since he was pissed the band went against his wishes and didn't do a total-band cover photo). What more can you ask for?

Also, if I recall, some of the eagle-eyed forum denizens of the time noticed the road crew seemed to be setting up for a final encore (with Jeff's upright bass, hinting it would probably include an "Indifference" closer) before putting the kibosh on it, probably due to city curfew on the arena's shows. So complaints about it not being long enough don't really bother me overall.

I'm still a single-digit PJ concertgoer (Wrigley will be my 9th PJ show, though I've been a dedicated fan since 1992), so I'm not terribly jaded about setlists or anything, but I still count that as a great show.
