I'm sure they'll be fine. Just hope they get a replacement that can keep bringing back the rock. The show I saw earlier this year with the young kid on bass (can't remember his name offhand) was a lot stronger than previous years. Not saying anything bad against Shonna, but it felt like they were slipping more into R&B than rock over the last few years, and it was good to get that Rock Show feeling back.

Update - Note from the Hood:

    http://www.facebook.com/notes/drive-by- ... 7541907347

    Y'ALL:

As I guess most of you have heard or read by now, John Neff has left

    Drive-By Truckers. Effective immediately.

I was actually first informed by my sister who was up earlier than me

    and read it on Facebook.

In all fairness, he did send me an email saying he was quitting his

"job" and wouldn't be going with us to DC this weekend a few minutes

before he posted it, but I was attempting to sleep in.

Kind of a sad way to end a sixteen year relationship, but we've all

known that things have been strained on that front for over a year now.

He made no mention of future plans, a player as fine as Neff will have

    no trouble ever finding work.

He would be an asset to whatever situation he applied himself to.

We certainly appreciate the incredible work he's done with us and as I

said, we wish him nothing but the absolute best.

DBT will continue onward, as we always do.

There are no plans to try to replace John.

I've never considered anyone ever to be replaceable in this band.

We have constantly changed and morphed and this will be no exception.

We always say, play every show like it's your last, it could be.

    But not right now.

DBT is making definite plans towards starting a new album in the

spring and I'm always excited about recording new songs and seeing

    where that leads the band.

This band has been a big part of my life for nearly 20 years. It's

never been a job to me and I'd rather quit and move on than have it

    ever be that.

We're a big, sometimes dysfunctional family, but we've always drawn

strength from each other and the big glorious noise we make.

I always try to treat every new year as a new beginning and this will

    certainly apply this weekend.

Onward and forward and may everyone have a safe and prosperous 2013.

See you at The Rock Show.

    Yours Truly,

    Patterson Hood

    Drive-By Truckers

Did you write that Neff and Shonna are a couple? I somehow missed this.

I like Neff, but he never really fit in to me...especially coming on the heels of Jason leaving.

I love this band, but damn, they are dysfunctional.

I think they were a couple prior to Shonna leaving. Always thought it was weird that Neff stuck around after that.

Absolutely dysfunctional. I suppose as long as you've got Hood, Cooley, and EZB, you've got the core of the DBT though. But, as I think I mentioned on the Isbell live album thread, hearing his solo on Outfit made me realize how much the DBT misses his tone/playing.

I agree, DBT is that core 3...actually, when I think of the band, it's the Cooley/Hood tandem that really resonants the most.

I started following the band in '05...right after "Dirty South"...they've released some good quality songs/albums since then, but that 3 album arc of "Opera", "Decoration Day" and "Dirty" is hard to beat.

So, Eye Candy has Shonna and Neff now?

That three album run is as hot as it gets.

And from what I've read Eye Candy does have Shonna and Neff. I think he played with her on some of her other small shows this year too.

Yeah, Eye Candy has both Neff and Shonna. Neff's role in the band goes back before he became a live member, all the steel guitars on any of the DBT albums is him. My guess is that, with a clash between Eye Candy and DBT dates over the next few days, he was given some kind of an ultimatum perhaps by 'er indoors!

Matt Patton is the new bass player, was in The Dexateens before, who are also pretty awesome.

Is there a reason why Rob Malone left the band and never came back?

No idea, but he also left just before the band was about to go out on the road!

Looks like Jay stepped up on Guitar, and killed it according to the Three Dimes Down board.

3DD also has a link up to last nights show, downloading it now:

I heard that DBT will do an extensive Northeast run in March. One of the shows will be March 7 at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT.
I don't know when these will be announced...I'd guess later this month.

Catching our first Patterson solo show tomorrow night at a pretty swanky place....the Alys Stephens Center, home of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra on the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) :ugeek:

The Patterson Hood solo show last night was actually Patterson, Brad Morgan and Jay Gonzalez. The first set was heavily material from "Heat Lightning...." with a couple of DBT songs thrown in...."Little Bonnie" and "Daddy Needs a Drink." Cooley came out and played banjo on a couple of songs in the first set.

Cooley was out there for the entire second set playing his Wes Freed acoustic guitar. This meant a whole bunch more DBT songs.....all Patterson songs. They even played a couple of Adam's House Cat songs. The show ended with an epic version of "World of Hurt."

Patterson did announce that they have the "Alabama Ass Whuppin'" masters in hand. So, look for a sonically re-mastered deluxe edition coming soon.

Yeah, Rob Malone found the masters when packing to move house or something I believe? Great news, that albums been unavailable since forever unless you pay a high price on the Bay.

Sounds like you got a good show, indeed a DBT acoustic performance since all 4 members were in attendance!

Got back yesterday from the Homecoming run at the 40 Watt... a very mixed bag of emotions indeed. Craig Lieske, the bands merch guy, passed away suddenly on the Friday morning. Anyone who ever saw a DBT show will almost certainly have met the dude with the wild white hair working the merch booth, to the fans he was a part of the band (and often joined onstage for People Who Died).

Watched 'em rock the house in Birmingham last night... In a new venue that is only about six blocks from where Southern Rock Opera was recorded....louder, louder, loudest....lots of songs from the aforementioned SRO including "Shut Up and Get on the Plane" and "Angels and Fuselage" back to back to close out the encore...and my first live version of "72 (This Highway's Mean) with the full band. They even threw in a cover of Alice Cooper's "I'm Eighteen" for good measure.
