Just listened to Mylo Xyloto. It's shit. I really, really miss Parachutes and A Rush Of Blood To The Head. Those are a couple of amazing albums. Why the need to go all pop and electric on the new albums these days?

I agree with you. Their first two records were fantastic, but have slowly been declining since. At least we have two albums from them to appreciate though, right?

Parachutes is always a beautiful listen, and to me, never gets old.

THANK YOU. I couldn't agree with you more! Those first 2 records were incredible. I think of it as Coldplay broke up and it's just a bunch of idiots parading around now pretending to be Coldplay. Seriously, every time I hear Amsterdam or the Scientist it makes me want to bang Chris Martin's head against a wall saying 'look what you had you idiot!!!!'

I remember when I first popped A Rush Of Blood into my truck stereo in 2002 and was just blown away. It seriously was all I could listen to for months, minus The Scientist. My top 5 Coldplay songs in random order: Clocks, Amsterdam, A Rush Of Blood To The Head, Everything's Not Lost, High Speed.

It's a shame what's happened to them, musically.....but in past articles it seemed Chris Martin was only concerned with becoming the biggest band in the world, and not concerned with sticking to the formula that made them one of the biggest bands in the world. Oh well.....

Is it any surprise these clowns got worse? From day 1 they were a watered down radio-friendly Radiohead, and continuously made their music more and more sterile as the years went on. Yellow was terrible to begin with, and the downward spiral only got worse.

Wrong. They're a watered down (or trying to be) Radiohead now - just with poppier hooks and synths and drum loops. In 1999 they were not radio friendly when Parachutes came out - they played simple drums, guitars, and keys. They were the new style "alternative / indie" group and Yellow was the only song to get some airplay - this was back in the boy band days. A Rush Of Blood put them on another level, and it's hard to understand how anyone can say that album was part of a downward spiral. Take it from a guy who loves Pantera, Tool, and old Slipknot.....A Rush Of Blood is in my top 10 of the 2000's.

Yellow is the worst cover of High and Dry I've ever heard. As for them being "alternative" have you heard Clocks? Every Coldplay song since their debut has been massive on the easy listening stations here, they're as alternative as James Taylor

I never liked Yellow, but Parachutes is a great album.

I liked Parachutes, but I thought that was a pretty poppy album at the time too. I like the first song on X and Y, and absolutely nothing since.

Really love their first two albums and even enjoyed most songs on their third quite a bit. After that, they lost something and I'm not interested in their newer stuff.

  • havent heard Mylo yet but i loved Viva la Vida not sure whats up with you all.

I agree. Rush of Blood is one of my favorites of all time, and is one of the best albums of the 2000's.

I think its cool the band refuses to make the same album over and over again. what artist wants to do that? Rush of Blood is great, but imagine if they had put out the 3 albums released since then, and all of them were basically Rush of Blood part 2 3 and 4?

parachutes sounds nothing like Viva la Vida and i personally think thats a great thing. not sure how you all like your art and music, but i respect and admire bands who change things up, reinvent themselves and their sound, change their image etc...

ive never really understood the hate for coldplay. i think some people geniunely hate them, and that fine, but i also think its general bandwagon hatred as well, its not cool to like coldplay, so people hate them, or dont admit to liking them. The whole idiotic 40 year old virgin line about coldplay that became some sort of mantra for people... its dumb and childish.

ive never really understood not liking a band because they are one of the biggest bands in the world, or not likeing them because its not hip or cool to cop to liking them. doesnt make any sense to me.

i like coldplays unabashed pop tendencies. and i like their personal style and art. their wardrobe for viva la vida, and their style for mylo is very interesting.

i mean any band that created a song like clocks or Fix You or In My Place,

I think with Parachutes and the Yellow airplay, Coldplay went from being a modest unknown little band without great aspirations to being one of the biggest around, in a very short space of time. Parachutes was a good strong album, which captured something, and struck a chord with a lot of people.

With Rush of Blood to the Head I think they really excelled themselves and stepped up to the plate. For me, that is one of the best albums of the 2000s. Great songs, a great mood and emotion.

I can't listen to Viva la Vida though - every one of the singles from that album has a melody stolen from somewhere else - every time I heard them for the first time I found myself just trying to figure out where I had heard this tune before. I lost heart, I miss the old Coldplay, but I still play Rush of Blood to the Head regularly.

I'm with you 100% on this... but it doesn't always mean it's for the better, ya know? Sometimes it works for a band, and sometimes it doesn't.

But yeah, I would get bored of a band that never evolved... however I'm totally okay with admitting that with some bands there comes a certain point where I'm willing to part ways with them.

Is their older stuff a lot different and actually good? I actually don't mind their more recent singles too much since my taste in music has expanded a lot.

Parachutes was the beginning of great indie rock, and thankfully the beginning of the end of boy band music.

coldplay was included on garden state soundtrack and last kiss soundtrack, with the garden state soundtrack being one of the defining albums of what was indie in the first 10 years of the decade.

i would say they are indie as they are covered on stereotypically indie blogs like stereogum and pitchfork, and because of the overt arcade fire influence on Viva la Vida. lets not forget it was chris martin who was about the biggest champion of arcade fire as anyone was, proclaiming them "the greatest band in history". Coldplay headlined the indie festival that is Coachella.

In the same way that Spoon, Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine, Death Cab and the like will always be considered indie, reguardless of the fact they are all on major labels.

i consider myself a hipster, and maybe its not typical of hipsters to like Coldplay, but i consider Coldplay indie leaning at least.

I also think Coldplays sound influenced alot of bands that became huge indie bands, Snow Patrol was obviously influenced by them, Keane, Plus Coldplays influence lean indie, REM, Radiohead. While both were on major labels, both are bands embraced by the hipster scene
