Damien Echols wrote a hell of an awesome Pearl Jam song

I love Jeff's music also.

How long must she stand
Before the ground, it gives way
To an endless fall
She can feel this
War on her face
Stars on her pillow
Folding in darkness
Begging for slumber

I'm not blind
I can see it coming
Looks like lightning
In my child's eye

I'm not frantic
I can feel it coming
Violently shakes
My body

Her son's slanted
Always giving her
The sideways eye
An empty chair where dad sits
How loud can silence get?
And mom, she reassures
To contain him
But it's becoming a lie

She tells herself
And everyone else
Father is risking
His life for our freedoms

I'm not blind
I can see it coming
Looks like lightning
In my childs eye

I'm not frantic
I can feel it coming
Darling you'll save me
If you save yourself

Great words - co-written with input from Ed I believe?

However, it ain't nothing without the music : )

Music and Lyrics: The Iraq War is addressed in the songs "World Wide Suicide", "Marker in the Sand", and "Army Reserve". Damien Echols, one of the three members of the West Memphis 3, co-wrote the lyrics to "Army Reserve".
Track listing 11. "Army Reserve" Lyrics - Vedder, Damien Echols Music - Ament Length - 3:45

I wonder if Damien ever heard the song. Is he allowed to listen to the music, being on the death row? I've read that he can only get stuff made of paper. Maybe he heard it over the phone. Or Eddie sung it to him.
In a way, he got to be part of the outside world, and contribute something himself, bless Eddie to give him that.

I have always thought that Ed did what he always does...........used something Damien has said when he (Ed) wrote the song but gave Damien writing credits so he could earn some money towards his lawyer fees. But it's more fun to think Damien Echols actually wrote some it.
  • Personally, I think Charles Manson writes better music......
    Take me piece by piece.....
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
  • I don't know that Ed always just takes something someone says and then uses it. Tomas Young actually wrote No More with Ed- it wasn't just Ed giving credit after using something Young said.

No. Ed wrote No More after a phone conversation with him. Ed asked him if there was anything he wanted in the song and Tomas said he always liked the saying " Nothing's too good for a veteran, So nothing is what they will get" thats the only lyric Tomas personal said would be cool if it were in the song. Ed wrote the song. He also wrote all of Long Nights for Tomas and emailed them both to Phil Donahue a very short time after talking to Tomas on the phone.

Just because Ed said in the one clip while talking to Tomas....I could use your words......doesn't mean Tomas wrote the song. Ed was saying he used things Tomas had said in the phone conversation. At the time Ed wrote those two songs he had yet to ever meet Tomas in person. Most people think Long Nights was an Into The Wild song....it was written for Tomas Young before Into The Wild was a thought in Ed's head.

So even if it was, it doesn't change the fact that it's awesome. If you go to a beauy pageant one of the contestants has to be the ugliest but she's still a beauty queen.

    Capish

    The song rocks.

    Woah, woah there.

Ed told us in Chicago, 2009 that Tomas helped him write the song. He said with his help, it took him 20 minutes, and without his help it would have taken him 20 years. Just going off what Ed said, no need to get excited.

Ya he meant he used things from his conversation with Tomas.

 I'm far from excited. I'm just an asshole.

I just realised it was Damien Echols who Howard Zinn was referring to in the Lance Mercer picture book, 5 x 1. And I always pictured Ed and Damien siting down together during a prison visit and writing the song together.

Seriously? There are far worse songs on ST...IJ being one of them, although I'm sure everyone on here would crucify me for saying that.

I love it. Fits perfectly with the theme of the record. Unlike BIg Wave or Parachutes. And it is a perfect compliment to Come Back.

One of my favorite song's from the self titled '06 record. I didn't know it was written by Damien Echols, or to that matter co-written with Ed.

Arguably the worst song on ST is .. get ready for it ... Come Back!

Yeah I don't like Come Back either. More Pearl Adult Contemporary than Pearl Jam. It's not that I don't like PJ's ballads...but I think Come Back and Just Breathe are kinda cheesy.

I have a friend from high school named Damien Echols. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
