Yes, incubus was on before PJ.

The last 3 bands on the main stage were in this order: Silversun Pickups --> Incubus --> PJ.

Great show!!! This was the first opportunity I've had to see Pearl Jam since Cincy '06 and they didn't disappoint (do they ever disappoint?) I was on Mike's side squishing against the poor people that were squashed on the bar. It was the first time I've gotten closer than 75' from the stage, and as expected, it's a totally different show from that vantage! Anyone that hasn't been to a GA setting PJ show should make plans to attend, if possible. Mike was awesome and made the show, while at the same time not taking away from Ed (I think someone else in the thread mentioned this).

While it did seem like a greatest hits compilation and there were a few songs I would have liked to hear that I didn't, I can't complain...they did an amazing job!

The Ten Club people squished up front with me were pretty awesome, also. It was great meeting some of you guys!

A special thanks goes out to the young woman that I had the privilege of meeting and hanging out with that weekend. Other than PJ, you really helped make the trip!

...and before all the pervs ask, it was all pretty G rated
  • We watched 5 full buses drive right by and not stop. It was frustrating...

Err, why would full buses stop to pick up more people?

We were fine. Front row at PJ is unbelievable. Nothing like dodging all of Mike's pics. 8-)

hahaha, I wrote that out of jealousy
  • This has already been posted, I'm sure, but did anyone catch the AWFUL review for the whole fest in general in the SanFran Chronicle?? Eff them hard. And yeah, I was front row Mike's side and got a pick, :)

Outside Lands coasts on variety, not urgency

Looking at the masses aimlessly wandering through at the second annual Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival in Golden Gate Park over the weekend, it seemed like there were few acts on the bill anyone actually felt they had to see.

Dave Matthews Band? "Sure, they're all right." Incubus? "Oh yeah, that one song was pretty cool." Jason Mraz? "Who's that again?"

The promoters Another Planet Entertainment had three years to plan the first festival. Permits for this year's event remained tied up with the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department until just a few months out, even though the agency stands to reap up to $1.7 million when all is said and done.

So unlike last time, when people stampeded for hot commodities like Radiohead and Wilco, this year it felt like they were there simply soak it all in - the sun, the spectacle, the food, the alcohol and, hey, maybe some music from a lineup that was decidedly diffuse.

With seven official stages, several vendor tents offering live entertainment and almost 100 acts spread out over the enormous Polo Field and neighboring Speedway and Lindley meadows, there were plenty of options at the three-day festival.

Whether it was Oakland's Zion I dropping socially conscious verses over lush futuristic funk tunes on Saturday afternoon, or Silversun Pickups charging through loud psychedelic guitar convulsions the evening before, the bands on the bill covered a broad spectrum of tastes.

That didn't mean the audiences - an estimated 100,000 people showed up over the course of the weekend - were entirely willing to give up the oldies for obscurities.

An inexplicably large crowd showed up to shower 69-year-old Tom Jones with undergarments as he trudged through casino chestnuts like "Green, Green Grass of Home" and "Delilah," while killer young bands like the Duke Spirit and Deerhunter essentially played for the gophers.

Given a choice between TV on the Radio's waves of distorted noise and the Black Eyed Peas' pole-dance-ready pop hits on Saturday evening, most chose the latter's "My Humps."

Mraz, whose lite-rock hit "I'm Yours" has become virtually inescapable over the past year, cooled down a sizable chunk of the crowd with his lightweight beach tunes, while across the park, Mastodon was turning up the heat with its pummeling heavy metal for a clutch of curious onlookers.

But there was no sense of urgency in the air. Like last year, the stages were positioned across an eight-block area of the park, and navigating the rugged terrain could take more than 20 minutes from one end to the other.

So people kept cruising, often distracted by the mouthwatering scents emanating from the stalls of the local food vendors or big flashing displays of the corporate sponsors.

Friday night headliners Pearl Jam drew a decent crowd, but the group's set felt all too familiar, from singer Eddie Vedder's frayed flannel shirt and croaky versions of "Even Flow" and "Alive" (he was suffering from a throat ailment, he said) to the closing cover of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World." Was it 1993 all over?

Dave Matthews Band seemed to fare better Saturday, keeping more people planted on their blankets as the sun dipped down, by offering a career-spanning set punctuated by the singer's increasingly erratic ramblings and a cameo by members of the Black Eyed Peas on the song "Jimi Thing" that left some fans fuming.

Fortunately, Matthews made it up to them by giving a shout out to local band the Dodos and bringing Sunday side-stage act Robert Randolph up to assist him through the encore with muggy covers of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" and Sly and the Family Stone's "Thank You (Falletinme Be Mice Elf Again)."

It wasn't quite the festival-making moment that people will be talking about years from now - or even next week - but given the overall lack of fireworks, it was close enough.

The Ames Bros. were totally cool. When I asked them "what's it like to be famous by association?" Barry laughed and said, "we can't be that famous, we're working in a merchandise booth":lol: He said they are probably going to be at the Key Arena doing some stuff doing the Seattle concerts.
  • ANDD, one last thing: As a seasoned music festival goer, I just want to mention how poorly organized this festival was in general. I will give them some leeway, given it's just a baby, but man, it seems like they would have ways to draw off from techniques that work for other fests (cough, cough LOLLA). The staff was totally uninformed and had no idea where anything was located and directions to what part of the park the festival was actually in were vague (leading to MANY people walking all the way from one end of the park to the other in search of the fest- which is no short walk!) But my biggest pet peeve? No wristbands for 3-day pass holders! You had to guard your ticket with your life to ensure that you had it the next day for readmission. They had wristbands for people that bought "VIP" (read: cabana section) tickets, but none for us lowly peons. Besides, wristbands are just plain cool souvenirs! :(

I'm not trying to be confrontational, but, the wristband vs ticket argument is a poor one. I'd rather have a ticket than a wrist band. Perhaps that's just me.

I will agree with your assessment about the organization outside of the park, pretty poor. I got there are noon on Friday and none of the signage was up. There's really no excuse for that. However, having been a vet of music fests, you kind of have to expect that and do research before you get there.

I'm forced to agree. I really don't care about the bands, seeing that I was there for only one day, but the lack of good information from the staff was mind boggling. I didn't get a solid answer on where to park or which gate I should enter. I ended up getting comparably good parking out of sheer luck, thankfully, but it was a little nerve wracking when the best suggestion from the staff was to park somewhere far from the park and bus in...ugh.

That and the CC machines that were constantly going down, haha, although I guess at a festival that's to be expected...

With all of the complaints, I still had a great time at the show! Thanks PJ!

I was initially surprised by the single ticket for all 3 days, kinda expected 3 separate tix actually. Wrist band would have to be removable no? Just sleep with it? Cause I gave my ticket to a friend for sat/sun.

I didn't go last year, but now that I've pulled this off, I can see this festival being on my summer schedule every year if they keep it up. Lots of stories of folks missing the last BART train outta the city -- I've done that cab ride to the East Bay and it ain't pretty. Parking was not the pain I thought it would be, and I was in a minivan!

Neat that they pulled such a variety of acts in, a few bands every day I wanted to check out just by name recognition -- and more as I looked into the bio's of each act. I would never willingly go see a band called "The Dodos" -- until I read what they were about! hehehe.

But they had a pretty good staggered schedule so that you could constantly be watching music and miss only 1 or 2 songs at the beginning or end of someone's set as you hiked off to the next. But yes, some timeslot bookings were dissappointing... oh well. I didn't really explore the tents/booths too much, too much music to see!

And I hadn't checked the boards and had no clue about the Ames Bros, but I did find the wine tasting!

And back to the topic at hand -- the boys really did a great job of packing that 2 hour slot with awesome tunes. As mentioned, was kinda thinking Neil was gonna come out on stage for the encores, but it was noted that not a lot of that "sit in/special appearance" stuff was going down all-in-all. Was kinda shocked everyone wasn't out for RITFW -- but then I remembered, festival, not benefit! It's the benefit shows where they do that more....

And that always takes a while (eats the clock) of getting everyone set up to make their appearance, by my watch, they had only like 2 mins to spare by the end, they coulda stretched out the RITFW jam just a bit, but all in all -- man, they know how to time a set list!

And as kick ass as the first 3 songs were, the last 3 of the first set -- so many great runs of tunes in that setlist -- this one just worked awesome for me: Corduroy, Low Light, The Fixer, In My Tree.

How long has jeff and stone been swapping instruments on Down?!?!? Totally do not recall that in 2006...

I was actually pleased with the city's transportation plans for the festival. It was extremely easy for me. I used the exit that is behind Sutro stage and caught Muni 5 that took me downtown where I was able to catch BART. So, I don't know what those people are talking about and how they missed the last BART train. Though this was my plan of action for Saturday and Sunday. As for Friday, I knew I would have some more rockin' out to do with the peeps that came from all over the place for this festival and that we would continue at a nearby bar, I actually parked downtown and took a cab to my car after the party was over. It was totally worth it though. I met so many cool people that night :)

No, I was the obnoxious guy that was over dressed in a white button up shirt that was holding a poster tube and couldn't sing, haha. Decided to give all of you poor souls a break about halfway through the show with the sing alongs,
  • I was at the show, I was pretty far back because Q Tip from Tribe was playing like an hour before Pearl Jam on the other side of the park, but it was still awesome. Low Light, Given To Fly, MFC, In My Tree, always cool.

Started the morning off at 6am, drove from SacTown, arrived a little before 8. As I was walking trying to find the entrance a female staff member told me I was going the wrong way. I knew my map said there was an entrance past her but she insisted that I turn around. I asked if she was sure, she replied, "whhat you callin me a liar, ok i'm a liar now." I kept walking where I thought the entrance was, luckily met some nice people who had been at the entrance since 4am, I got to stick with all day....Jack the bong ripper and "not his wife" Awesome people.

Anyway, sit in the blistering heat for 4 hours until noon when they opened the doors, the ladys scanner wouldn't work but I wanted front row so I just bolted past her.... :D

Got front row Mike and Jeff side. My first time in the front row. Honestly at the point where I secured front row that damn sun couldn't go down fast enough. I rocked out as Mike just shredded all night long. I haven't been to a PJ show since 03 and I realized last night how much I missed it. I think I'm going to try and do the rest of the tour.

Even though Ed's voice was shot, it was cool he came down off the stage. I thought overall it was an amazing night.

Honestly, I can't say enough about the Pearl Jam community. From Eugene Ed to Sacto Monica to Quebec Catherine to Australian Alex to Knoxville Brian to Jack the Bong Ripper and his not wife, and the SF blonde girl behind me (can't remember her name :( ) You all were very awesome people to be around all day.

Oh and the lady that told me I was going the wrong way, she saw me in line and apologized that she gave me bad info.....

It was indeed a great time. You did forget one thing and that was my bag of bagels. :)
  • In case they haven't already been posted here's a link to some great pics from the festival including a lot of PJ pics.

BTW- I'm the one getting ready to toss the crowd surfer over the rail in pic #35. Also I didn't realize that I was that much taller than people next to me on the rail.

That's why it was so easy for you to catch Mike's pics... (being taller).
I didn't unpack yet, but I might have lost the one you catch for me.

    Hello,

Thanks for the link. Too bad your man got sick. Glad you got to catch some of the show.

Hopefully one of the mods, or someone will read your post, realize you write for a real outfit, and get you a photo pass for a show in the future.

Then you can write about a full set.

Very unlikely the boys would appear next year, but I just read this:

Another Planet Entertainment has signed a five-year agreement with the City of San Francisco and S.F. Parks and Recreation to present the festival at GGP. With four more to go in that agreement, we've got something to look forward to and hopefully see it grow to be a major national event as well.

"Basically we've already compiled a list of headliners we'd like to see for next year," Scott said in conclusion. "We'll start our planning now. The festival can be an anchor situation for the main stage artists. We'll go after our wish list and go through that process."

Was neat to get the Bonaroo boot, really wondering if this one will be in the offering....

That's good news, because, I was a little worried with the rumors I heard about lackluster ticket sales.

I really like haivng a music festival so close. The logistics will only get better.

Can't imagine PJ would headline in the next few years though, and, that's fine with me.

Let's just hope they get Faith No More on the bill next year.
