I remember hearing that the third show was not selling at all so they added the acoustic thing and no repeats to boost sales.
I'll ride the wave where it takes me......

I was at N1 and N3. Put in for 10C tickets for N1, but wasn't really char on how the process worked, and was worried I wouldn't get tix, and the general public sale had come and gone, with the two shows selling out in minutes. When they announced the 3rd show, I pounced and bought tix. I think I got notified like the next day that I'd gotten N1 tickets, so I sold my pair for N3.

After the first show, of course, I realized what was going on, and so I went on ebay and bought a single for N3. A couple of buddies knew about the acoustic set, and so we went down early. They had seats down front, I was near the back of the seats. It was awesome, though. That acoustic set was unreal (and finished Binaural for me, with All or None). The couple in the seats next to me strolled in after Sleater-Kinney played, oblivious to the pre-show, and left after One Note.

I wish I could have gone to N2, but it just wasn't feasible at the time. I am glad that I snuck in a camera for my buddies who were down front. He got some cool shots like this one during Arc:

Best Pearl Jam show I've been to.
The third show was added after the fact.
They announced the acoustic set only about a week before the show I believe.
The opening set was everything. It was a warm up to Benaroya Hall which was a couple of months later. I remember they had Sleater Kenney mic up way to load during the encore.

I was at all three nights.  Night 1 Ed announced during the show that they were going to play every song.  I remember thinking after Night 2 how impossible that was going to be due to the curfew issues.

Either Tuesday or Wednesday before the Friday show, Nick Carter on 104.1 made the first announcement about the acoustic preset starting at 5:30.  It was announced to fulfill their commitment of playing all the songs.  I remember being at work when the announcement was made.

at the time I was on the BRY and TSIS boards and posted over there.  It was also quoted on this board (the old version) as well.  Typical of the internet, everyone was saying I was full of it but after other people started hearing the announcement word spread quickly that it was true.

As others have said, I have been to a lot of the so-called “epic” shows and this one is right up at the top of the list.  Sitting back and just enjoying the songs was such a nice experience.

If I remember correctly the crowd did stand during Indifference.

  • My favorite show by far.  Went to all 3 as I live about a half hour away.  I went to the show not knowing about the acoustic set and met up with our usual crew of 20 or so people in the parking lot to tailgate.  My friend heard an announcement about the acoustic set earlier on WBCN I think.  Only a couple of us believed him and actually went in early.  I remember Fortunate Son with Sleater Kinney during the encore being a debacle.
  • Went to all 3 shows. 7/2 was my first show ever and was fortunate enough to meet Ed before the show when he was riding his bike around the parking lot just chatting with fans and being super chill. Got to shake his hand as a few of us said hello. So down to earth. As my buddy and I walked away, Ed started riding his bike next to us and my friend nervously and excitedly asked: "Is it true you are gonna play every song!?" Ed replied along the lines of: "I was just working it out in the trailer and its gonna be tough but we are gonna give it a go." He then rode of and told us to "be safe and enjoy the show." Quite the memory for my first show ever.

They played them both the next night in Hershey.  It was the first time I saw Glorified G which made the trip down worth it... as well as seeing a live PJ show.

  • Still waiting to see glorified.  Thought for sure we would get it night 3
  • I went to nights 2+3. Still the top 2 concerts of all time for me. Night 2 was my favorite, just because the setlist was exactly what I wanted to hear at the time and they crushed it. I missed the acoustic set for night 3. Found out about it while sitting in traffic. But the rest of the show was epic. And I still think ‘03 had the best sound love and made the best boots too.
  • Found out th day before the show that there would be a preset and I got in the car that afternoon and drove 14 hours to get there.

The acoustic set was undoubtedly the best of those 3 shows.  And the 1st set of night 3 was great, with a great Cant Keep opener, and great versions of Tremor Christ, GTF, Cropduster, and Faithful. And the man trilogy.  It got away from them a bit in the encores.

I still think night 1 overall might be the best of the 3.  But that acoustic set.  I bet I've listened to that show 500 times in the last 15 years. I can't believe it's been 15 years and literally zero video has come from it.

Believe it or not, Mansfield #2 was the best of the 3 shows for me. I would rank it as the my third favorite show I attended (out of 16).

In reviewing that setlist, it’s one of the shortest PJ shows I’ve attended...but it was one of those right places at the right time I suppose.

I was 22, single, with my best friend, and got last minute 9th row seats from a scalper in the parking lot for the 2nd night in a row.

The energy was fantastic, the setlist seemed tailor-made for both of us at the time (we were also really into Riot Act too),  and we had an absolute blast from beginning to end. I’ll never forget how loud the crowd was during Alive and Baba...you can hear it on the bootleg.

    Mansfield #3....

Pros: The acoustic set was amazing and special, the crowd was just crazy, the band just did not want to leave the stage that night, we got some rare treats, and it was a historical show in their career

    Cons:

It really was a let down for me when Ed had the girl from Slater Keeney sing so much at the end of the night. I want to say she did three songs and I am not a fan at all. The only time I saw them play Fortunate Son and she sang most of it...

The goal (probably unrealistic even then) was an attempt to play every song in their catalog over the three nights. They went way over curfew playing covers on night #3.  We never got Satan’s Bed (which they played later in the tour), Last Exit, Glorified G, and some others that I was looking forward to

Note: to this day I’ve never seen Satan’s Bed or Last Exit live

Some of the crowd near me was annoying (talking to each other or making calls on their phones during most of the songs during the acoustic set)

I would rank this show 12/16 for me, but we all have different experiences at different shows. This show is still very important and something I’ll never forget.

I really think they’ve been documenting almost everything from the past 28 years and this will be released someday. I know there was professional camera crews at the shows. My prediction is we are going to see many “historical” PJ shows released in the years to come (maybe even after they are through)...this for instance, Wrigley 2013, etc...It will certainly be that much more special if these shows are released years later.

I went to nights 1 and 2 with a bunch of friends. And then to both MSG shows. When the announcement was made about the special opening set for Mansfield 3 I couldn't find anyone to who wanted to go so I got a single ticket for myself. I scored what I thought was a last row seat under the overhang. It turns out they have seats that go beyond the overhang and into what would be the lawn. I was in that last row. There was a little bit of rain at some point but no big deal. Count me in as one of the seemingly rare people who didn't mind Sleater-Kinney. I Believe in Miracles and Know Your Rights were the mild dampers for me. And everyone complains that YL got played twice over the three nights, but no one says anything about One Note having played twice at Night 3! Ha. I loved those shows but I hope to never attend another amphitheater gig again. I napped in my car for over an hour after the show waiting for traffic to get out of there. Conversely I was out of Fenway in no time last week.

Thanks mpedone for sharing that pic. Might be the only photo I've seen from the Mansfied shows (not counting Stone's tryst with Cowguy). I'm bummed I didn't even bring a disposable camera with me back then.

Man, this thread is really bringing me back, I wish I could hop in that time machine right now and go back to 2003! That was such a great tour.

  • wish there was video of the show - I was front row center - seen 121 shows this is #1 still.
