Release = best song ever/crappy live versions in recent years

this song is absolutely spine tingling.....i could go on forever about how great it is.....and i know it is improvised and he never wrote the lyrics down, and it is only played a few times on each tour...

BUT MAN, EDDIE HAS REALLY BUTCHERED THIS SONG IN RECENT YEARS!!

he forgets the best parts of the lyrics, leaves out the first verse, sings the first chorus too many times, pronounces the word "release" in a weird way, etc

any live version of this amazingly beautiful song i've sought out from recent years has really.......kinda sucked

guess i'll stick to the album version, atlanta 94, and melbourne 95

i've never had the privilege to hear it live...

but there are many versions from the Binaural tour that kick ass.

    Esther's here and she's sick?

hi Esther, now we are all going to be sick, thanks
  • of course if i were there live i'd have no complaints!

i just mean to hear it on a bootleg

no other song gets screwed up so bad......and since its such an amazing song, that sucks!!

I don't mean to nit pick, but can you tell me ONE time he's ever sung Lukin correctly all the way through? There have been some pretty accurate renditions of Release.

Sure he forgets the lyrics sometimes, but he does it with other songs too, not just this one. Gonna have to say you're completely and utterly off-base with this one. Saw it live in 2006 in Boston and it was chilling, and subsequent shows in 2006 had it sound just as well.

Saw it in '06 in Boston too and it was definitely chilling! I get the chills listening to that version to this day, maybe you just had to be there.

  • Really? Release? I mean, I know Eddie flubs the lyrics once in a while, but seriously, it's not even in the top 10 of PJ songs that get screwed up when played live.

Is anyone else with me on that, or am I not hearing something that everyone else is?

PS - My favorite versions are Boston (Mansfield) '98, Tokyo '03, and Los Angeles '06. :)

I'll never forget Release opening the first LA '06 show. Finally seeing them with great seats (4th row center) in my home town, the blue lights behind the band coming on...one of those special PJ moments that will last a lifetime!

I was totally with you on that, buddy. Although my seats weren't as great as yours, it didn't matter. Opening with Release (my favorite PJ song) literally brought tears to my eyes. It was a fucking awesome moment.

Definitely with you on that! I guess Release is one of those songs I can overlook a minor...or for that matter a major, screw up :) I just thank every diety known to man that I was lucky enough to hear it as the opener of our first show.

I agree. That is one of my favorite versions.

The album version is mind blowing. People should just be happy with that!

Actually, I made a looped TAPE of the instrumental hidden track back in 1991! I used to fall asleep and wake up to "Master/Slave".
  • Call me ignorant/uninformed/a dog/whatever, but I don't think I've heard an inaccurate version of Release. You do realize that the third verse is slightly different than the original third verse intentionally, right? Now Do the Evolution, THAT one is consistently fucked up live. But it's all good, it adds to the Pearl Jam live experience.

The only one I can think of offhand that is messed up is Katowice II because they forgot a whole verse.

ahh... one of my favorite boots.

the whole band was on point during the 2000 tour. some magical shows.
  • hmm i disagree. they definitely play it alot. and also i find most versions amazing and such fanatastic ways to open shows. the emotion in the crowd is unbelievable. "i'll ride the waaaave, where it taaakes meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" is always beautiful and the crowd all goes nuts singing it. ed does seem to screw up or repeat words sometime, don't know why, but he vocals always seem great ... not like the studio version ... but still great.

  • ive seen it many times as the opener and i would say that it is in constant rotation as one, so not that rare. also would agree that it is pretty well done each time. great opener, its what i hope for every show.

  • I'm not being a PJ homer here ... but I really don't know what in the hell you are talking about.

I can't think of a single live version of release that I own (and it might be 100) that is bad. Not saying it hasn't happened. But I haven't heard it.

Heard it live in SF in '06, and it was as good as I'd ever imagined it.

Anyway, I'd probably make an appointment with your ear doctor ...

Uh, yeah. That's what I'm talking about. That was my first-ever release. Imagine waiting 16 years to hear a certain song live ... and then getting that freakin' masterpiece. I could barely breathe.

It's great to see all the love for the San Francisco 2006 version. When I saw this thread that's the first thing that popped in my head. I could be wrong but I don't think there is a single mistake in that version. The original poster should check it out. The crowd singing "where it takes me" is so loud!

I love Release. It was the first song I ever heard live by PJ. Forever I thought it was hands down my favorite opener. It may still be, but "Of the Girl" blew me away San Fran 2006 night 1. I have yet to hear crappy version of Release live.

Immortality get's fucked up quite a bit. BUT, when they play it well it's one of the best songs ever. Mike's had some insane solos from that song.

Release is probably THE best opening song. Long Road is my personal favorite.
