What song could represent the Pearl Jam sound?

edited December 2007 in The Porch
When friends ask me what Pearl Jam sound like, or for me to send them a song which encapsulates their music i never know what to send. I usually think something off Ten like Alive, Porch or Jeremy.

Recently ive sent Dissident, Save You & Daughter instead

what songs do you think could stand for Pearl Jam, something that rounds up what they stand for, their particular sound, just an average amazing pearl jam song.

i dont mean your favorite song, i mean the one you think is most 'them'.

I've always thought that Corduroy is the perfect song that sums up everything which is great about Pearl Jam. It's their definitive song.

interesting, i hadn't really thought of Corduroy.
When i saw Pearl Jam live it was the only poor performance (the rest of the show was amazing), just ed's vocals on corduroy were a bit weak (as it was the first song) and the sound people werent doing a good job at that point. It put me off the song for a while. But i think i'll listen to it again now, it used to be one of my favourites actually.

Rearviewmirror and corduroy are pearl jam in two words.

Whenever I try get someone into pj, I always make sure to include those two + Indifference, YL, SOLAT and Black. Those are the songs I get the best response for. Then I fill in songs I think the subject might like!

    Breath and Corduroy.

    I always think Yellow Ledbetter.

Sure, it didn't make Ten etc. but the whole calm, laid back acoustic sound with references to the porch just sums up Pearl Jam for me.

just look at what they play the most and that answers the question in what they think. What did they release on Guitar hero a video game most newbies will know them for versus actually seeing them or owning an album at first?

    ten: Evenflow
    Vs: Daughter
    Vit: Cord
    No Code: Hail Hail
    Yield : DTE
    Bin: Insignificance
    Riot Act: Save You
    PJ: WWS

now which of those albums is the Pearl Jam sound??? Good luck figuring that out

all I know is NO CODE is so underplayed by the band when you look at the song totals, what a pity.

my first answer was evenflow, and that is what I am sticking to.

    Teenage Wasteland :p

    Hahaha j/k.

It's almost impossible to pick one I would say, but I personally think the recording of Brother with lyrics would be the best. It's hard, crunchy, 'grungy' even though most of us hate that word, good 'hard' eddie vocals with soft soothing vocals in the bridge, and Mike tears up the solos in two different ways, melting your face off and soothing, yellow ledbetter-ish in the bridge. Damn I've got to listen to this song now. :)

Upon further thought, I would also have to go with a song like Down to show off that classic 'PJ outro" and a couple songs like Alive, Even Flow, Black, Of the Girl, etc.

Alive or Breath. Both songs have it call. The amazing lyrics, the guitar sound, and the McCready solos :)
