it would be nice....I'd probably buy the download and the album. I like having an actual copy.

"there is now speculation" by who? the guy who wrote this?

i think a lot of bands will follow suit with this idea, and pj will most likely be one of them i would have to agree. they came up with the FREE download single idea anyways!!!

i have "speculated" this without reading this article: PJ's disdain for compainies/lables/corporations leads me to believe that they'll be next in line to do this. (well maybe not next in line, but their next album will be availible in this format)

after all, it is supposed to be all about the music with the band, right?

If Pearl Jam tried this I would hope they do something as cool as the discbox for In Rainbows and also include all 3 formats (LP/CD/mp3) with the purchase. I would certainly order it as I did for Radiohead. If they were made to order (which I thought the RH discboxes were) then fans wouldn't have to worry about it selling out, they'd just have to get their order in by a certain date.

    Lame :(

I will not pay twice for a fucking album, and I will not pay for anything which I cannot legally resell. Downloads violate the doctrine of First Sale.

With the information of that DJ, and 'the busy year' comment of the 10c anything could be possible. :)

There's an interesting write-up on the Nine Inch Nails website regarding a download album program, with the results. Apparently the bands should not provide a free download option, because most people are too greedy to pay $5 for an album, if given the choice.

i don't think PJ will ever do this no matter how indie chic it is. and this writer is dead wrong to think that because once upon a time they were even bigger than radiohead is a good reason to think that PJ would.

radiohead fans are very different than PJ fans even with the overlap fans considered.

I do not really know anything about the website but to me it sounds like broad speculation. I wouldn't bet against this happening but for a "news" story, it would need some type of interview to back it up.....

....If it happens, I would pay 0 for the download and buy a CD and LP when they were pressed.

Wasn't Kelly Curtis quoted as saying that Pearl Jam would be watching the Radiohead model with an eye towards PJ's future? I think any successful recording artist would have to be aware of the frontier Radiohead has just crossed. It could impact everyone.

I'm not saying the move is enough to inspire PJ to follow suit, but it's worth their attention.

Another high-profile manager was still trying to process the boldness of the Radiohead venture.

"My head is spinning, honestly," said Kelly Curtis, who represents Pearl Jam.

"It's very cool and very inspiring, really."

    [...]

Some pundits say that while Radiohead's move might have been a detour for an established band, it was hardly a path newer acts could follow. Curtis, the Pearl Jam manager, said that years on a major label established Radiohead and made it possible for the band to buck the system.

"It's the newer bands I really feel sorry for," Curtis said.

Still, he added, "Everyone will keep an eye on this because this is the most exciting thing we've seen to this point."

The problem with that commentary is it is trying to compare Saul Williams to Radiohead, no contest there. Trent produced this Saul Williams album and is just upset that this distribution process did not work as well for him.

Unlike Saul, as an already well established artist, Radiohead had the fan base to make the pay what you want release work for them. I think this could also work for Pearl Jam with the huge fan base they have. This method just may not work well for those who are not so well known.

Thanks for the link and quotes. I didn't quite know where to find it.

To the original topic, I wouldn't surprised if the Seattle blogger made his speculation based--in part--on those quotes by Curtis.

comparing the saul williams/NIN fiasco to radiohead is insane. trent reznor is crying like a baby because HIS fans didn't buy an album that he produced. why would he assume that his fans would buy a saul williams record?!
