The World Needs Pearl Jam

I dont post much on here. But felt inclined to do so at this time. I know we all yearn to see them play/hear new music. We all face our share of adversity, and the last year for me has been tough on me in my own way and I'm sure many of you have been through things. I saw them last Spring on their mini tour. 2 in Philly, 2 MSG and it was great, but with the Rock Hall looming it was kind of a feel good tour. The 2003 tour, even with an album with harsh reviews felt so raw and desperate. Thats how I feel. Not in my own personal life but seeing amazing artist after amazing artist die. I loved Scott Weiland and Chris Cornell. Weiland, Cornell, and Eddie were guys I started listening to in the 6th grade. They were dark, and I didnt quite process what they were saying very well at that age. But whose to say its great to process it in our adult way anyway. Which is why I think many of us love the fact that they have and play the song Im Open. But we are all deeply troubled. Pearl Jam has played the part of not wanting to save the world- rightfully so in my opinion because they cant alone. But the troubled souls unite mantra, the vibe that I found as a 6th grader of shared angst, is something we are all missing. It seems like the band with their kids and lives have started to drift off to the retirement/semi comeback status. But please one more time. Light up that flame. We all need it. Eddies solo tour sounded amazing. But we need the 5 against 1 mentality now more than ever. Theres no one else who can bring it. Chester Bennington is now dead. Music needs to ignite. Ive thought for so long we need Rage Against the Machine back. Metallica like it or not is trying! Their new album and attitude is actually refreshing if you give it a chance. Artists like- Kings of Leon, My Morning Jacket, Jack White, The Black Keys, Arcade Fire- most of them working with Pearl Jam to get going (The Strokes!) need to wake up. We all need it. I found myself today thinking, shit I'm depressed. The world has gotten to me. Foo Fighters try to fight the good fight, and it helps that they are out there trying. But we need the Last Remaining Light. I'm sorry U2 is great, but I've never seen them cause its always stadiums and somehow the concerts escape me. Pearl Jam is it. Someone read this and understand. We need that spark. I need that spark. The world sucks right now. Music is the first thing I reach too, and Eddie and the guys have said time and again thats the first part of healing for them as well. New music, shows just lets get it going. One more time. I'm 35 and I hate everything right now. We need that Jeff Ament intellectual positivity. The Matt Cameron reliability and superior form. The Stone creative genius and team leader. Mike with the timing and imagination of outer space. And yea, Eddie the voice. I don't know what this post means, but if anyone reads it. I feel its important, its my message. Help us out.....

Nice words OP. While we wait for Pearl Jam and whatever new adventure with them, there is a ton of music out there, artists who are very active that can help you get through the rough patch.

Pearl Jam is my favorite group, so I certainly agree that a new album would provide some much needed joy, but there are plenty of artists out there that are producing great music that is thought provoking and can be healing (Jason Isbell and Frank Turner are the first two that come to mind).  Explore new music by reading music magazines, ask for recommendations of other bands on here, or just go on YouTube and click on the suggestions that it gives you.  The music and words you are looking for are out there, but you've got to find it.

Pearl Jam makes amazing music.  But they can't save the world.  That's on us.  Take a listen to Ed's speech during Porch at Bonaroo in 2008.  As Ed says, a song can't change the world, but people can.

I think that when in that spot of needing good music, it's incumbent on us to find it...vs. others providing us with it, whether on demand or not.

Musicians, like us, are doing the best they can.  Have pressures like the rest of us.

It's there, through so many talented and true artists.  Just search it out.

Some people suck, many more don't.

The world is what it is, so be the change YOU want to see.

Nice post WW and I agree with your sentiments.  It would be great to see PJ come back with another strong album.  But perhaps even more importantly than having our old favorite bands (or what's left of them) light our fires musically, maybe the time is ripe for a whole new crop of young, energized, passionate and creative musicians to light that spark.  In times like these, I think that is inevitable.

    Agreed.

I think there is a lot of nervousness amongst us because in addition to the Cornell and now Bennignton tragedies (is there something more to this that we don't know?), this is the first calendar year since 1990 that they haven't played a full or at least a semi-full show.

This followed by the fact that for the first time we will have to wait at least 5 calendar years between albums.  Their longest album drought was between the last two, which was a little over 4 years (9/20/09 - 10/15/13).  We'll be lucky to get an album in 2018 now.

Musicians and artists should not be burdened with having to try and be the voice of a generation to help 'save the world.'  But unfortunately for them, they are a strong voice for the people.  Same thing with those actors on their political soapboxes that piss everyone off.

Imagine waking up every morning, and in the back of your head you know millions and millions of people are counting on you to put out a new album or tour somewhere within a days drive to you.  I don't know if PJ feels this pressure, but I feel it for them.  :  )

That being said...it would be REALLY sweet if they just came out and said, "New album to drop in 2018" with a tour to follow."  Even if they don't have any material...put some pressure on yourselves and get cracking boys!  ; )  I will take one album every 5 years if I new that is what they wanted to do.  It is waiting on the unknown that is making it a nervous period for us die-hards.

    Long Live PJ!!!!!

Thanks I needed that.  After watching that I watched their Unfuck the World video, followed by the Run video from the Foo Fighters, followed by hearing the new QOTSA song.  First time listens on all.

I would gladly trade B-Real and Chuck D. for Zach.  3 of my favorite bands ever are now one.

At least we have late Summer to look forward to...

    8/25 - new QOTSA album
9/15 - new Prophets of Rage and FF albums.

Am I missing any other major ones to look forward to?

No. Those are the only major Rock releases scheduled.

I wish there were new acts I enjoyed as much as old acts.   It feels like new acts (most of the post-grunge era) don't have the gravitas to them that older rock bands had.  I'm not sure what is, but most of them don't have "it".   The problem is that I don't expect older bands to have "it" either.   When I was growing up in the 90's and the grunge output slowed, I started moving backward in the rock catalog rather than forwards.  Starting to appreciate bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, David Bowie,  etc....   Most of those bands records post age 50 were never as good as their earlier output.

Rather than expecting Pearl Jam to resurge like they're 20 year olds, I'm kind of hoping Rock Music has some kind of resurgence.    I keep hoping some new bands will figure "it" out and have a voice.    The rock bands of the late 90's and 00's never really did it for me.

I was listening to a podcast the other day where someone hypothesized that all the great rock songs have been written.  It was a genre that suck around for 50+ years and there's 10's of thousands of rock songs.    It's possibly that every original style, chord progression, and music has been written.  There might not be enough left for any new bands to create something truly unique in original in the genre.   I hope they're wrong.
