Check out the 2017 tour thread.

It doesn't sound like anything is in the works right now.

Um wilco busted out an album without anyone knowing. Conceivably pj could birth a new album in one live session. I wouldnt be suprised if it happens. But my personnel tank is empty. I couldnt make a new album easily. Pj has the god given chops to do anything. See how i made it about me briefly. Love-Chris-Cornell.

Would be great.  I just don't see Pearl Jam doing that.

I would be surprised if they dropped a surprise studio album. Happily surprised, but surprised nonetheless.

I have to confess, I'm ready for something exceptional.  I don't expect it so much (after so many years, that would not be fair) as much as I just wonder if it might be that time for this band.

    Looking at it this way:

Neil Young: 26 years after his first solo album:  "Mirror Ball"
Dinosaur Jr:  24 years after there first album, "Farm" and after 31 years: "Give  a Glimpse of What Yer Not"
R.E.M.: 24 years after their first release: "Accelerate"
Mission of Burma:  24 years after their first LP:  "The Obliterati"

    etc...

Sometimes band in that 25 to 30 period of aging get a resurgence going.  Not often, but if any band could, it's Pearl Jam.

We're living on the edge of something big. It's a fantastic time in history to be alive.

Creative process is a funny thing, songs don't just happen all the time.

I'm sure that's very true. I bet it's frustrating for them to best asked all the time, "When's the next album coming out?" when they have absolutely no idea themselves.

On the other hand, playing a few shows doesn't necessarily require creativity. Just a will to tour/perform.

There is a ton of amazing music out there to discover good people. Unless Pearl Jam is all you listen to, then I feel for ya! Haha!!!

I wouldn't expect anything for a while - given that Matt was deep in the touring/recording process with Soundgarden I'd imagine it will be a while before he's ready to make new music.  I could well be wrong though.....

They work at their own pace.  We aren't overdue for an album.

We know they're writing. Something will happen at some point. 2017 is already a killer year for music. Plenty of stuff to pass the time.

If they consider themselves to be in an active band and not simply a nostalgia trip semi-touring band (HOT TAKE!!), I think they are overdue.

I've reached the age where nostalgia is okay with me - especially when discussing a band that been around since I was in high school.

I'd prefer them to be more Neil Young than Rolling Stones, but it seems they are headed in the latter direction

I guess, but Neil Young put's out alot of music, and a lot of it isn't that great.   I'm not sure what's better.   Putting out ok albums every 4 or 5 years or ok or less thank ok albums every year?

Neil doesn't alway hit, true, but he's always experimenting and looking forward. Stones found their formula and have been  (generally ) repeating it since 1975.

Personally, I'm happy they are taking a break for 2017. My wallet needs a break from PJ, and if they were playing anywhere in NA I would be real tempted to keep my streak going.

The new QOTSA album & tour & a few other shows will see me through the year.

Yep, maybe we'll get a double album! We've no releases I've immersed myself in the laters 'Lightning Bolt'... Didn't quite dig it at first , but now love it. An album we've a lot of depth, my fathers son & infallible really grow..just close your eyes and let the music take you. Lightning bolt still my favourite song....but apart from pearl jam found myself listening to band of horses & my morning jacket...& a great band Estonia called Trad Attack....

Neil is a unique case really. He's on his own journey. Pearl Jam is a band that needs all the members to be happy with what's being worked on. Reckon we'll see a new record in 2019 at the earliest.

I predict they hit the studio this fall or winter and because it has been so long they dont waste anytime.  I predict one 3 or 4 week recording session then another week of mixing and its done.  Spring release!
Fyi Lightning Bolt was recorded in two 2 week sessions.  2 years apart.

Agreed. Really good stuff and not just the same old.
    It's a hopeless situation...
