after over 20 years, looking to not renew

After over 20 years as a 10 Club member, I looking into not renewing...don't get me wrong I've had some amazing times and experiences with this band.
I've seen a lot and spent a lot too. I believe successful bands/musicians run their course after the 20 year mark..after that it becomes repetitive.
Before anyone here rushes to judgment (or could care less), realize this-
Let's be honest the xmas singles have sucked for years now (the last 7" that was actually about xmas was 2007)..PJ plays here (Seattle) once every 4-5 years now..(granted each member plays or is seen around the city more so than anywhere else)
the baseball shows in the past year were a slap in the face to their hometown all because EV is from Chicago and know Epstein...
EV's personal political (sometimes drunken) rants onstage and off...and it'll just get worse this year moving forward...gee I wonder why??..
I always appreciated other band's nonchalant approach i.e. Soundgarden, AIC, etc. the music speaks for itself and no real need for always extravagant tours, merch, exclusive vinyl, etc.
Don't get me wrong PJ is not U2..they've always had their own of way doing things. I don't see the difference anymore nor do I really care...and one last thing..
I don't need another PJ tshirt!!...

At least you have the part of the band you enjoyed living on in your heart & mind.

    agreed...thank you..
there's just too many bands and musicians throughout...
all the extras PJ/10C has to offer is always top notch but gets to a point where it seems unnecessary, juvenile maybe...

To me there's no band I'd rather see live than PJ. That's what keeps me renewing. Sure they don't play Seattle often, but we also have Vancouver. I consider Vancouver/Seattle both be my local markets. Last 12 years: 2005 - Gorge & Vancouver, 2006 - Gorge, 2009 - Vancouver/Seattle, 2011 - Vancouver, 2013 - Vancouver/Seattle, 2016 - Pemberton (Vancouver). It's not horrible living in Southwest BC or Washington state. Between the two cities there's something every few years. That's enough to keep me going (unless they happen to play somewhere where I was going to visit anyways).

The fan club membership is really about access to tickets for me. As you mentioned the xmas singles are often live songs now which seem underwhelming from a band that's puts out all their live shows. I still like to collect them but most of my favourite ones are older ones now.

The current state of rock music makes me sad. Most modern rock music sounds devoid of soul/energy/voice that made 90's one of the best eras. Most new stuff to me feels overproduced and formulaic. If I ever gave up PJ I'm not sure what I'd go see. All the concerts I go to now are from bands that have been around for decades. At some point I won't get to see any of these bands play anymore, and all I'll be left with is the memories.

I kind of hang around because they are comfort food to me. Any given song can bring me back to spring 92 or fall 97. Etc.

I dont even go to shows anymore. I just like the exclusive merch from time to time. Doesn't matter. Good times. Good memories.

20 yrs is a long time so dont feel bad.

I'll never understand when people post these self absorbed threads. We get it, you don't want to be in the Ten Club anymore, who cares.

After 20yrs you should know that if you are going to leave you must post an epic and pity farewell departure thread.
    Do it on AET though.

Now is not the time to bail. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and so many other milestones to come. Stay away from the merch and get back to the music as a long time fan. Or leave....but know there is more good to come...even if its mixed in with politics. That's in this band's DNA.
You knew that when you signed up 20 years ago right? When they do a 7 night run in Seattle next year and play a full album each night...then you will regret letting your membership lapse......

yeah 20 years ago I was more naive and less wise...
and about full album shows consecutively...I doubt that will ever happen...they've never played a 7 night run ever. nice try

Best of luck to you, @DischordVision . It sure has been a fun ride since they started playing music. In the end, it's the music/experiences/friendships that matter most.

    Ignore the negative posts above.

I don't really get the whole hate on the ballpark shows. I went to 3/4 of shows and they were some of the best shows I have ever been to. Saying that good luck on whatever you decide. Just make sure you are 100% sure because there is no going back.

strange way to view your relationship with the band... 20 years and you want to drop them basically?

I think you make it pretty obvious in your post why you want to leave... you are pissed there hasnt been a local show recently. Thats all it is.

You were in the fanclub for the X-mas singles?? I'm surprised you stayed in this long.

Honestly, if not for the chance to buy/win tickets, I never would have joined.

In the grand scheme of things your 20 bucks a year isn't that much. I hear where you're coming from, I often go back and forth with them too and the last 10 years or so the merch has been pretty commercial basically and has kind of turned me off a bit. As I'm writing this I'm watching Neil young on the last waltz on pbs so I'm hoping you stay. If not, cheers, and best to

thanks. I'm waiting til this Fri. for newsletter then might pull the plug...
I think the merch is overblown in terms of being a member. in the commercial sense the public or casual fan isn't in on what is offered obviously...speaking of Neil Young who I have a lot of his records, box sets, EVEN THE PONOPLAYER! which is a nice, little hi-res audio player...if NY was such a big influence on the band considering they made an album together, I wish PJ would stop giving a fuck and put out more music (NY has at least 1 album each year, sometimes 2)...who cares if it sucks?!? Neil doesn't and never will. they're always going for another Ten like greatest hits album or extend the previous one...stop caring so much..collaborate with someone..

Well, it was still kind of a lottery back in the day, but you were pretty much guaranteed to get a ticket, unless it was MSG. Wasn't 2000 the last tour where you could only put in for 1 show? I could be mis-remembering.

Cheers to you, whatever you decide. But if you still enjoy seeing them live, just switch over to the $20 membership, put it on automatic, and forget about it.
