Arena or Stadium?

bbiggsbbiggs Posts: 6,931
I've been reading a lot of people saying they prefer arena shows to stadium shows on the tour rumor thread. Curious as to why. Is it the acoustics? I've seen shows at both (only stadium for PJ), but I personally enjoy a stadium show. Nothing like a nice summer night outdoors watching your favorite band. Acoustically, I thought it sounded incredible at Wrigley. I'm interested to hear other's perspectives.

Best,

Brian

Arena. Holds the sound in better and it's more intimate. Plus weather isn't a factor.

i honestly hate both. pearl jam is only band that i will go see in an arena/stadium. i'd rather be in a club with 1000 or less people. huge shows are just such a drag. luckily i'm usually pretty close for pj. call me a snob but if i can't actually SEE the band and i mean like their fingers on the fretboard, then i'd rather not even be there. i can watch it on youtube haha

but to answer the original question: arena. it's smaller

I actually prefer shows at outdoor amphitheaters!!
We have a GREAT venue here in Columbus that holds around 6,000 people for outdoor shows.
The venue also has an indoor "club" that uses the same stage,
and they have an INCREDIBLE sound system!!
It's a little too small for a PJ show...
but have seen My Morning Jacket, Beck, Band Of Horses, The National,
Modest Mouse, The Black Crowes, The Killers, Flaming Lips, Jane's Addiction, Wilco and many other groups there!!

Let's skip the mid-October show. :teeth chattering: MM was a rather chilly show! However, it was a GREAT show and they do have an incredible sound system. EL is on my list of venues to return to.

While I admit that I screen watched most of the time despite being mid field at Wrigley, I wouldn't trade that show for anything in the world. A BIG thanks to friends who upgraded my tickets so that my husband and I could be where we were. (We could have done without the puker, though.) The weather finally cooperated right before the show and it was a fabulous night!

I have had great tickets at places- up front, rail and all that. I have had tickets where we could have gone Sistine on the ceilings. Still, sound is everything to me and I guess I would prefer an awesome sound rather than beads of sweat flying onto me.

Arenas for sure. The occasional stadium show is fun, but I'd much rather see an arena show where the majority of seats aren't a mile away from the stage.

It depends. If I'm at the front of either than I don't really care. In fact being in the first 10 to 20 rows at a Stadium show is pretty epic. I saw 3 stadium shows this year. GNR, Pearl Jam x 2, and was in the pits for all 3 of 'em. It's pretty sweet the energy that a Stadium show brings.

That being said there's many drawbacks of stadium shows. Mostly from the extra shittonne of people you don't have at an arena show. Plus even the worst ticket in an arena is still better than more than half the tickets at a stadium.

Overall I prefer Arena shows. Less insanity and smaller/intimate venues. I still like stadium shows though, I just like arena ones a bit better.

depends on the venue. PJ in Wrigley was way better than PJ in Milwaukee acoustic wise for me.

I was at Wrigley this year and have been to a ton of PJ shows in arenas and "sheds" (the outdoor amphitheaters) and to me arenas are better by a very large margin. Seeing them at Wrigley was amazing because it was different and novel and held special meaning for the band, but sight lines and sounds don't compare with arenas. I won't break the bank to see them in another baseball stadium.

Arena. Stadiums are awesome also, but flaws depend on where you are seated. I've been to a few stadium shows (non-PJ, so non-ballparks) and whenever I'm midfield, there seems to be a snare echo that comes from the the other end of the field. It's like wearing headphones that aren't in sync. I hear the snare in one ear then the other, half a second later. Weird that it's just the snare drum that echoes and nothing else. Can tune it out for the most part but gets annoying at times. BUT with PJ, I don't care where it is.

Big ass stadium shows..ive never heard a bad sounding pj show at any type of venue and I've seen the band so many times I could really care less where my seats are. If they are very bad I usually respectfully walk around and make friends in better areas.

Lol Park West is such an odd venue. I wasn't living here when they played Metro or the Vic. Maybe they could just randomly show up at Shubas one night.

Anyhoo, not to take away from the thread, but yeah, I prefer anything indoors.

Europeans & South Americans have stadium shows down to a science. Arenas work best in Canada and the States.

Arenas for sure. Stadiums hold lots of people, but sound and sightlines will always be sub-optimal.
