If you don't mind me asking, why does it matter? I am not trying to be rude, I am just asking is there something particular about "college" shows that means something? I live in Columbus, and they could play OSU's basketball arena, or they could play the NHL arena. They are only a couple miles apart, but I am not sure how it would change the show any. (Though perhaps Columbus is not what you had in mind when you were thinking of a "college town". Maybe Lexington isn't either.) And also, I could be wrong, but I doubt college students are going to be the ones filling these arenas these days anyways. I am really not trying to be negative, just wondering what your thoughts were that lead you to make this post?

I didn't attend any shows from 04-09. Primarily because from fall 03 to spring 07 I was a broke college kid and the touring schedules in general too. Im much happier now that I have a job and can spend money on 4 shows and hotels. So nuts to the college crowd, it ain't cheap going and the people that can/want to pay to go will go regarldless of where it is. I'm 31 now, and I'm even slightly on the young side of pj fans, so I don't see a big demand from current college kids.

I was thinking about Penn State and what a great night that was driving there seeing the campus and then the show itself just had a total different feel like I haven't felt since and it reminded me when I used to follow the Dead seeing them at colleges thruout the northeast what great trips those were in every sense of the word ....

Yeah they happen to be I'm thinking more like a string of shows where they hit up a bunch of colleges, I remember seeing U2 on a college run back in the 80s I saw them here at Stoneybrook campus and I believe they also played Nassau Community or Hofstra...

I'm a student here at UW-Madison and would literally love if they came and played at the Kohl Center or some small theater on State Street for shits and gigs. I've said this many times on the forums, I'm 22 years old and I've showed all my friends Pearl Jam (they all listen to EDM and country) and the love all of their music. I think if the band tries to reach my age range a little more (maybe by playing more college towns), kids my age would fill arenas. When they think of Pearl Jam, they immediately think of Even Flow, but I show them all the other great music they have and now they all listen to it, too. Playing more college towns would help broaden the base, not saying it should be broadened but it wouldn't hurt reaching a whole new age demographic. After all, we do want to keep R&R alive.

By the time the Dead was 20 years on, they weren't playing colleges either - they had gone to arenas. Pearl Jam definitely plays some arenas affiliated with colleges (UVA, USC, Kentucky immediately come to mind), but they don't seek them out, nor do they have to. Times are different now - I don't sense colleges are the moving forces for music the way they once were. Also, the tickets are expensive, which will turn away college students. Back in the 70s shows cost $10 - $15. Even in the early 90s, when I was in college, most concerts were under $30 (I remember paying $50 for Pink Floyd and thinking how expensive it was!). And Pearl Jam is a bargain compared to other touring acts.

If they played in college towns and catered to the younger crowd there'd definitely be some mosh pits in GA...something I dont think the band has seen at one of their shows in nearly 20 years

Oh for sure, Go, MYM, Spin the Black Circle, and DYE would definitely get a crowd full of 20 year olds "rubbing shoulders." Obviously with the thing that went on at the 2000 festival with 9 people being trampled might be a little scary for the band, but mosh pits are always fun in moderation.

The Raleigh show was scheduled to be in the arena that NC State plus basketball - so that, combined with Columbia and Lexington is 3 college shows in a row. Charlottesville was a college show as well.
