Corgan blocked reissue of classic soundtrack. There won't be a Singles Vinyl Reissue?

Pumpkins mainman told Epic records to "fuck off" when they wanted to revisit hit 90s movie Singles

Billy Corgan says he scuppered a planned reissue of the soundtrack for classic 90s film Singles.

The Smashing Pumpkins mainman says he took his revenge on Epic records after they apparently buried the band's track Drown on the 1992 release, which also features songs by Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Chris Cornell and Screaming Trees.

Drown was getting airplay and was set to be the Pumpkins' breakthrough track, before the release of 1993's Siamese Dream.

When the label approached Corgan about a reissue 20 years after the original soundtrack's release, he told them to "fuck off," Alternative Nation reports.

Corgan says: We put the song Drown on there. They were pushing Alice In Chains’ song Would which is a classic, it’s a great song. They were pushing that, but Drown actually started to get traction at radio, it was actually our first song that had momentum at radio, and Epic killed the song, because they didn’t want it to take away from Alice In Chains.

"They killed our single to make sure that it wouldn’t hurt Alice In Chains’ thing. I can’t complain, because I love Alice In Chains, and I’m friends with Jerry Cantrell, and it’s all good. But what I’m saying, that’s the kind of stuff nobody ever hears about. Where actually, in the old record business, and they still do it, you’ll kill something where it makes no sense.

"Why would you kill something that is working, and working with the public? So that song actually didn’t become as big as it would have become because the record company that held the copyright killed it."

He continues: "My only revenge was when they came back 20 years later and they wanted to do the reissue of it, and they asked for their demo, and I told them to fuck off. Slight revenge, I took money out of my own pocket, but that’s the way it goes.”

Last month, Corgan slammed the current state of the rock scene and said Radiohead were the last band to do anything new in the genre.

Corgan brought back drummer Jimmy Chamberlin for Smashing Pumpkins US tour with Marilyn Manson. The band are currently working on Day For Night, the follow-up to last year’s Monuments To An Elegy.

I remembered Cameron said that a while back. Word was the release would be this August. It's August and no release date at all ..

    It doesn't look good.

Are you f'n kidding me?! Leave the damn song of the reissue then. He is "killing something that is working." Screw you, Corgan. Grow up. :anguished:

Corgan only blocked Epic from using the demo to Drown. Soundtrack is still on. There will just be no extra Pumpkins tunes (thats a good thing)

But yes he's pretty much ruined my Pumkins fandom just by speaking to reporters the last fifteen years. I cant even listen to them anymore. Its sad when people you liked turn into annoying bitter people.

Billy Corgan has zero leverage or pull. Do you really think he could block a major label reissue? Almost everyone on that soundtrack sans Mudhoney is bigger than him or his band. He's not blocking anything.

Good for him..he has the balls to do and say what other artists/bands would never think about doing in the music industry..Pj used to be this way.

What did he do? He said no to an extra song appearing on disc 2. About as "ballsy" as PJ not letting Viagra use "Alive" a few years ago. (Pun intended)

    Sounds about right.
Billy has been working tirelessly to prevent people buying Smashing Pumpkins music since about Mellon Collie.

You can't listen to him because reporters ask him questions and he provides honest answers??? It's all good. I still like his music..old and current and could really care less what he says in the media.

I don't even feel like listening to them anymore.

That said, I'm still holding on to Gish, Siamese Dream, Pisces Iscariot and all the b-sides from that era though. There's a lot to like in there if I'm feeling it on a particular day. I do wish I had stopped there though instead of blindly following along through Machina.

I quit after Gish & Siamese Dream. Never listened to Pisces bc I hated that cover of Landslide. And Mellon Collie had about 4 good songs and a bunch of crappy filler. First 2 albums are stellar, though! SD is an album everyone should own.

Yea I don't like machina too much either.. It was a rushed album during/after the band fell apart..but lets not forget it was one of the first at the time that was released for free online which was cool.

I gave up when the solo album came out. I actually liked Zwan.

He's so into pop culture and legacies. What's ironic is that he's turned into an 80s hair rocker circa 1995. Trashing other artists and anyone after them. Irrelevant, bitter and delusional. Really look at that soundtrack. An indie loving teen knows who Mark Lanegan is. Paul Westerberg is more revered than ever. Billy's become a joke.

Leave SP off the album then, I won't miss it.

I will say he was becoming a joke when he was with Jessica Simpson (nice score tho) and I think he had a pic of Paris Hilton on his zeitgeist album credits. I like zeitgeist..I attribute that to taking residence in la and popping too many pills in that scene. He's back in Chicago now a little older and wiser ;) and coming back strong!

I hope the reissue still happens. What a fucktard, that guy.
  • Twenty years later would have been 2012. It's 2015.

No one has any idea if this has any affect on the planned reissue by Crowe. Read the original "story" from AN and it's two quotes taken from an interview, with no context or other info. Could be talking about two different things: Epic wanting to reissue it in 2012, not the planned 2015 reissue.

Chill out and calm down. And change the headline of the post until we have better info.
