edited July 2013 in Other Music
Two of my favorite bands came out with albums this year.
Grux grux king and backspacer. All in all it's been a good year for music.
However I think Dave Matthews band put out a better album then pearl Jam.

What are your thoughts???

IMO, two of the best albums this year. I say Backspacer wins by an inch.

Backspacer by an inch. But it needs to be said that the DMB album is their best one put out since "Before These Crowded Streets," if not their best, period.

Disagree. I know that everyone says that DMB is for frat boy douches, but you have to give the band credit for being extremely skilled at their instruments, and Dave Matthews is also a great song writer. I think if you ever experience the band at the Gorge, you won't be posting snarky comments like passing a Natty Ice.

I have to say Backspacer because I am not a big DMB fan but I have to say that the DMB drummer is far and away one of the most skilled drummers I have ever seen or heard.

I think that's the thing w/ DMB is they are all great musicians. But big deal. I took my cousin who is a huge DMB (56 shows or something like that) to his 1st Pearl Jam show last year in Hartford. His jaw dropped. Could not believe the energy of the band, especially Eddie. Then he was blown away in Philly this year after seeing DMB 6 times last summer. Not to say that DMB doesn't put on a great show, but him and that acoustic guitar just standing there would get on my nerves after the 3rd song.

    DMB...I laugh....why do you ask?

yes they are skilled musicians but they suck

comparing PJ to DMB is like comparing PJ to a corny peanut infested turd....there is no comparison

it's like comparing Led Zeppelin to Poison

    Haven't heard the DMB album...

I only know that once I rented their Central Park concert in DVD, and after 20 minutes of pain I ejected it and put Pearl Jam "Live at the Garden". Aaah, what a wonderful evening. :)

I saw DMB do practically the entire record live last summer and was not impressed. I did not buy it. PJ Backspacer is a very good record which has been in my cd player since I received it.

It's funny that you say that...in the early 90's I was the Exec. Sous Chef at the Whitney Hotel in Minneapolis and everyone stayed at the Whitney back then...including DMB...I have met Dave, spoken with him and all his managers/handlers and bandmates...a genuinely nice bunch of fellows...but Dave himself got so loaded that he shit in his room and wrote on the walls with it...and that is a fact...Dave likes his poop, Kurt Cobain threw red wine all over his room, Slash had strippers in the hallways, Jack Nicholson kicked Sean Penn as he laid passed out under our grand piano....but Dave was just inspired by shit.....

    so then....

    What Would You Say? ;)

Different strokes for differnt folks... musical taste, deviant behavior, whatever!

Anyway, i was in Boulder, CO from 92-96. DMB played CO quite often, and was able to see some amazing shows in Vail, Red Rocks, and the Fox Theater (I have an awesome poster of the 11/94 show). Good times, but I have sort of lost the passion...

That is the complete opposite direction of my interest in PJ. I have always been a fan but my interest has grown w/ the last 2 albums. I was very disappointed by Riot Act but the band has roped me back in! I have seen some great shows in the past few years, and caught the 3 of 4 Spectrum shows.

As far as I am concerned, it really is not close (PJ Rules), but I would never "hate" on anyone for any musical preference. DMB, Phish, U2, Springsteen, Jay-Z... Who cares. its about the love for music and the creative process!

On that note, pop music is trash!
    9.29.96, 8.28.98, 9.1.00, 7.5.03, 9.30.05, 6.1.06, 6.19.08, 6.20.08, 6.24.08, 10.27.09, 10.28.09, 10.30.09, 5.20.10, 9.3.11, 9.4.11, 9.2.12, 7.19.13...

I agree completely, music is personal, but I'm just hating on the bad bands, not the people on the board :)

I really love DMB but I much prefer Backspacer to Big Whiskey.

I think the second half of Big Whiskey is much weaker than the first half, whereas Backspacer is absolute quality throughout.
