~straight Edge Thread (for Sober People Who Rockkkk!)~

Thought it would be cool to make a thread for those who are naturally high at the shows! Personally, I am in recovery, a 12 step program, a friend of Bill, whatever you want to call it. And I've been at all PJ shows sober. I've been to others shows drunk like...er, um...shit, I cant remember. LMAO And that is the point. I love rockin out sober- I go more ballistic cause i can still stand.

Lets hear from people who have an awesome time straight. Its encouraging and God knows I need it, cause sometime getting f#$#ed up at a show looks good, for a second, until I see all the people passed out BEFORE the show even starts. Than I realize it is all worth it.

Do you think they would make this a permanent thread?
If so how do we make that happen?

Thanks and Peace

That would be me! I can't have alcohol because I always have a bad reaction to it. It's more fun when you know what's going on anyway!

I used to get so buzzed for concerts I couldn't remember them
the next day. Final straw came when I dropped some acid for
a Genesis show(yea,I'm fucking old),looked up to the sky and
saw Fred Flinstone riding a skateboard in the clouds with Barney
    on the back.

I like to see PJ straight but for Tool I will smoke.
    I love live shows.

I am a friend of Bill's evil dope smokin' cousin, AKA a member of NA. I have been to 10 PJ shows dating back to '93, all but one straight as a pin, and I can tell you that drugs/booze are not neccesary at all for PJ shows. Actually, seeing the people get fucked up and outta control is really reaffirming for my recovery.

Have you ever noticed the recovery references starting around No Code? I just got a new sponsee the other day who is a huge PJ fan, and was telling him that in 96' when No Code came out (like 2 mos after I got clean), it felt like I got into recovery and so did PJ. I really beleive that songs like Off He Goes and Present Tense are straight outta the program.

    Congrats!

My dad was a big drinker (he has stopped now), so I have an aversion to heavy drinkers.

I often wonder about the amount of money spent ($7 beers, $15 martinis), time wasted (hangovers, time spent in line waiting for beers) and inconvenience incurred (possible DUIs, alcoholism, medical problems) related to drinking.

Most people can do it in moderation, but some seem to ruin their lives.

I am happy I can enjoy a show sober, and the money I save is better spent on many other luxuries!

    good luck to ya!

After 19 years of abusing booze, I have stopped for a little over a year.
Attending these concerts sober is amazing to me. The best part is the next morning, next day and the days to follow each show when the memories of what I saw are still clear and powerful.

I don't judge drinkers. If that is what enriches your PJ experience, then I am supportive of that. Personally, I like the way that I am now.

I've never been a drinker for three reasons:

A - When I was 12, my doctor told me I have an enzyme missing from my liver, so drinking a lot was not recommended.

B - Not knowing any former alcholics personally, I saw what it did to Mickey Mantle

C - I just don't like the taste. I prefer soda and water instead.

Glad to see a thread for those that don't drink or get high at these shows.

We should support the beer drinkers at PJ gigs...the money they spend on beer allows the venues to make big profits on booze sales, and thus, they can charge a lower rental fee, which allows a cheaper ticket price.

Sorry to hear about your missing enzyme.
    That sucks.

At least it led you down a clean and sober path.

thanks, i don't think it's a major enzyme. but looking back on it, I probably still would have become a non-drinker even if it was there. It's just never attracted me, plus the financial costs and other consequences (hangovers etc) were never something I wanted to be bothered with.

me too, what's the point of going if you can't remember anything from it. i'm not against going to some bar or restaraunt and ordering an occasional beer but that's about it.

Drinking at a show is not my type of thing but grass however is different. I don't like being so stoned I can't speak, it's not fun and it's not the point, however having a casual joint or two enhances the exerience for me simply because I am not stoned out. The way that you experience the music is surreal, some instruments begin to stand out more than others and you hear parts of the song you'd never heard. Like I said, this is why I will never have more than one or two (literally) beers at a show and even then thats only if it's a sunny day. Being drunk ruins it for me, you stumble everywhere, you can't communicate with anyone, it's not great.

Straight edge here! I'm going to Reading in August, my first PJ show for a whole 15 years of being a fan. And I'll be HIGH on nothin' but the MOOZAAAAK! And my wife, if she's happy to have a p.d.a during 'Corduroy'.

I've seen PJ in all sorts of altered states, but now, for me, I go completely sober. Basically, smoking weed is not worth the risk (saw a guy kicked out in Grand Rapids for it, and there has been a recent thread on it) of missing the show; and I'd like to have a couple beers, but I absolutely refuse to miss any of the show by going to the bathroom.

It doesn't bother me at all to be sober at the show, but after the show, I like to blaze a fatty-boom-batty and reflect on the performance.

I'm sober at the concerts. I'm not much of a drinker except Champagne, and to keep it special I reserve it for special occasions.

Mike McCready was inspiration for me to drastically reduce caffeine. That man's like a wizard on stage. Incredible! Of course not much, except this gawdawful cold, could motivate me to reduce chocolate.

I dropped at Floyd 94- the sky turned blood red, the ground opened up , we entered a spaceship- a plane crashed inside the ship and a giant disco ball came out- the next day at school my friends told me I was dancing during intermission!

I think this is a great thread- the new album has really been an inspiration for me and my girl to sober up- the whole life wasted thing and we have actually seen 2 gigs now pretty much sober- trying to never go back again. good to know there are others out there...thank you!

For whatever reason, at a concert, I need nothing in my system...I rock out, jump up and down, scream my head off and go wild.
I think it just turns into a great endorphin-weilding-workout for me.
But either way, I love it.

I was a 2 cups of coffee at most/day. Usually about 1, and I found that the rush was good but it wasn't great at times. I started drinking coffee/lattes in 1993 when I moved to Seattle.

Sometimes the rush is very good, and the taste is wonderful. Also, I found that if I drank my coffee before I boarded the train, my jaw would tighten and my face would hurt. So, the challenge was could I be awake in the morning without coffee, and if I didn't have coffee would that reduce my metro-induced stress. I haven't read what Mike's diet is, but I would guess he had to delete coffee from his diet because of the acid. I could very well be wrong. Anyway, that man has so much energy that I thought "3 cheers for fruit" What I found is if I just squeeze lemons into hot/room temperature water it's a zing that not a rush, but lasts longer. Also, the whites of my eyes are whiter when I eat citrus.

So, coffee is now a special occasion type of drink.

I added my little caffeine thing to the earlier post because it seems that other posters were discussing their drug of choice, and caffeine is mine. It may not apply to this thread, but I put it in anyway. :)
