So much of my youth spent there, so many good times, back when they did 40 shows a year, not 4 like they do now. There was no Poplar Creek then, no World Music Theater, no Marcus Amphitheater. Outdoor summer shows would be in a crappy racetrack or all-day sunburn fests at County Stadium, Comiskey Park or Soldier Field. Summerfest's main stage was a bunch of bleachers, and shows outside Summerfest were rare. There was nothing like Alpine Valley in the Chicago-Milwaukee-Rockford-Madison region. Loved that place.
That's the first season's schedule--it was geared a lot more toward middle-of-the-road acts then. Sinatra! Helen Reddy! Henry Mancini! But they figured out quickly that rock was what worked. The Stones, The Who, The Dead, Springsteen, on and on and on.....
Hard to see it as worth the money, with so many venues accessible to the big markets now. It's a place for special occasions these days. Sad.
