    that's sad news....
PJ20 was also the only show I got to attend at this historic venue.
Glad I got to share it with one of my fave bands and all the great people I met there.

Nah...this will get picked up. Hopefully by someone to inject a bunch of cash into it.

Northerly Island caters to people downtown, or who can handle going downtown. I'm sure there's plenty of people in the North Burbs, Milwaukee, Madison who would rather spend a weekend at Alpine Valley than haul it all the way to Chicago. It's not like Midwest Bank or Ravinia are shutting down because of Northerly.

It seems like Alpine has been having trouble for years. Weren't there only like three shows there all season back in 2011?

You would think with the power Live Nation has that they would route more acts thru the venue.
Then again, how many bands touring today have the power to draw 37,000?
and if they do, they might opt for Chicago proper instead.
The size might work against it.

Ravinia caters to a different crowd.. Plus much smaller so you can't compare the two.. Midwest is surviving but on the decline as well I read.. Northerly is only 2 yrs into the renovation and is thriving..beauty location.. Easily accessible and can accommodate endless people.

Don't get me wrong I would love to see alpine survive I just don't see it.. Plus not many bands that draw the alpine crowd ( camping, tailgating, etc) can sell that joint out anymore..DMB.. Pearl jam ( 1 night only).. Buffett? Oz fest?

    Alpine rock is dead! Lol

DMB even skipped it this year in favor of Northerly Island. Pearl Jam hadn't been there for years before PJ20 and hasn't been back since. Seems like a great place for a festival but as a regular tour stop it will be tough to sell that many tickets.

Yeah, they have been struggling for awhile. I think there was maybe 2 shows there this summer. It's a shame because it's a really fun venue to see a show. And the tailgating there is the best.

AV in 98 was my first ever PJ show (it was the 2nd show of two)... I think I saw DMB there about three times... Such an amazing venue. Find memories... Alas...

And staying at a local cottage in Delavan is fun too. Especially if you rent "The Slanty Shanty" and don't tell your friends about it until about two hours after the show when they thought the uneven floors were their fault!

The greatest venue in the world to me.
Have seen Pearl Jam EVERY TIME they have played there.
Watched Eddie climb on the roof in '92 through PJ20.
Watched SRV moments before he died.
The Dead in the 80's with Jerry.
    Monsters of Rock festival.
    Its endless…
Feel like I've spent half my life at that place.
None of the outdoors in the midwest compare.
Red Rocks may be its only peer.

Were you there last summer? I know it was a mess when it first opened with the expanded capacity that they added last year, but I've heard they have worked out most of the issues and it is much better now. Still haven't been there since they expanded it, but what a perfect setting right on the lake with the skyline in the background.

I've seen a lot of concerts up at Alpine since I was a kid. Almost everybody that goes to concerts in the Chicago area - lists it as their favorite place to see a concert. At least people in my generation.

But it is a drive from the Chicago area, and seems to be losing out to much closer venues like Tinley Park and the former Meigs Field amphitheater. Also the Illinois State police camping on their side of the border after Alpine concerts with roadblocks doesn't endear people to going there either (I know they did that with a Jimmy buffet concert recently).

Yeah, I was there last summer (only time I was ever there). I didn't like it. Very hard to get to and from (sure it kind of fun to get a boat ride to it, but that was hard to find, and you only get a spot in a boat if you're lucky), bad entry point, the GA area is way too wide and shallow, which caused the view of the stage to suck pretty bad unless you were right in front of it (even with an expanded area, that wouldn't change unless they changed the location of the stage), the food and drink services and options were terrible.... did not like it at all. Sure the view of the city skyline was cool to look at, but that's about the only good thing I can say about it.

Northerly Island sucks! No one I know likes it at all! Impossible to get to, site-lines are horrible and the sound is equally as bad! Why anyone would choose to play there over AV is mind-boggling!
