Amsterdam Lodging

What section of town would be the best place to stay in. Found a nice spot on Air BnB that looks nice in Jordaan, but I am having a tough time deciding if that is the right part of the city to be in. If anybody has tackled this, or has reccomendations let me know. Apparently there is not much around the Ziggo Dome so I will likely train it in.

Thanks, and forgive the geographic ignorance.

    Hi,
In my experience Jordaan is lovely. It seemed a bit upmarket for want of a better phrase. Also pretty residential. When I walk round it I can see myself moving to Amsterdam. Most of the sights are within relativley easy walking distance give or take but the trams are awesome.

On another track there's a great Indonesian restaurant called longi pura just down from velvet records on rozengracht. Its not cheap but its really tasty.

    Hope this helps
    Rick

I saw the last 2 PJ shows in Amsterdam and stayed at the Hampshire Hotel in Rembrandt Square.

    http://www.hampshire-hotels.com/en/hampshire-hotel-rembrandt-square-amsterdam

A very solid location with a ton of nightlife at your doorstep. After both 2012 shows I easily grabbed a taxi back to that area and partied hard into the night. The hotel itself is also very nice and has bike rentals on site. Definitely rent a bike for at least one day as it will completely open up the city for you to explore.

Hampshire is really nice. We stayed at one on the south side of the city and it was really, really nice. I think it was the Hampshire Inn - Prinsengracht. Google search that and look at the street view; it was really nice, small and quiet.

But...don't stress too much about where to stay. Amsterdam is a really walkable city. Stay where it looks fun and don't worry about it being away from stuff; we hoofed it everywhere (and met Matt and Ray Cameron while doing so!).

My tip: google search "hotels in Amsterdam," click on "Maps" and find hotels that way. I always start by finding a hotel, and then looking at the "street view" to get an idea of the neighborhood. Neighborhoods/surrounding areas can make a big difference in the quality of hotels (and TripAdvisor isn't always accurate). I've had tons of success that way.

Oh yeah, do NOT stay out in Ziggo Dome area while in Amsterdam. The area itself looked fine, but everything you want to do while in Amsterdam (sans PJ) is in the city itself. Ziggo is a train ride away, and the train to the show and back will be PACKED with delirious PJ fans after both shows. You will not regret it.

One of my favorite memories is riding that train back from AMS 2, the train cars packed to the gills, getting dropped off back in the heart of Amsterdam at like 1am. It was breezy and pleasant. After both shows we stopped and got french fries (trust me, it'll make sense when you're there). First night, we shared them with a bunch of British 18 year olds, "on holiday" (who tried to convince my wife they were older than they looked). After AMS 2, we shared them with our friends Joe and Diane ("JOEJOEJOE" round these parts).

Shit...I'm getting really jealous...you will have an awesome time in that city...

Jordaan is amazing. Close enough to everything that you can walk, jump on a tram, far enough away from everything that you can sleep well and feel like a local.

Are there any decent (but inexpensive) hotels right near the train station? I'm in and out of town within 24 hours so the more convenient the better, but I don't want to sacrifice a good after-party.

I have also stayed at Hotel Amrath which is right across from the train station and walking distance to everything. It was an old naval college and has really cool architecture. Probably on the pricier end but it sort of depends on season.

I kinda wanted to stay walking distance from the Ziggo Dome BECAUSE of the packed train getting back into the city. Because then any sightseeing is only a short train ride away?

But then again I'm going to both shows, if I were only doing one I might have a different opinion.
