sirens vs light years

Two wonderful songs on similar themes, both with a ton of EV emotion. Light years has been a favourite for years, yet the melody and progression of sirens resonates extremely deep and taps a new dimension of pjs sound.

On a side note, when sirens was released prior to llightening bolt, I was in Europe exploring a number of concentration camps trying to wrap my head around how such an atrocity could occur. I was on my own for several weeks and unable speak local languages. I remember being in Poland, sitting in birkenau (the largest and most systematic death camps) in a forest area between gas chamber 4 and a Russian mass grave and I sat and listened to sirens. Never have I loved and missed my girlfriend and family more than that moment, it seemed to articulate a fear and sadness that I was unable to do in my own words.

As such...I vote sirens.

Light Years for me. I'm likely alone on this but I'd go so far as to say that Light Years is its respective album's best song. I'm going to hide now as the NAIS folks are angry!! :-)

The subtlety of Light Years makes this one an easy choice for me. I appreciate Sirens, but it's poetry both musically and lyrically is anything but subtle.

Light Years by light years. Much better constructed song, more interesting, better lyrics, no solo using the super cheese setting on the delay pedal.

Light Years, and those two songs aren't even playing the same game in my opinion. Someone around here early on that Sirens reminded them of November Rain, and that has forever poisoned my opinion of the song. I don't mind slow or love songs. I like Just Breathe quite a lot, but Sirens does have way too much glam rock embedded in it. Light Years is straight PJ.

Light years all the way. Sirens is ok but it always reminds me of a ropey Take That ballad.

I honestly couldn’t pick between the 2. They both rank in my all-time top 5 favorite PJ songs, but I love each for different reasons. Sirens still gives me goose bumps when I hear it, it is such a beautiful & heartfelt song that describes a more grownup side of love & how it brings out the fears that can haunt us.

Light years is also very emotional, but in a sad kind of way. I think of it every time someone close dies & hearing it always reminds me of the day that all rock radio stations across the country played the song at the same time to honor those lost at the concert in Denmark.

The more emotional the song, the more I tend to love them & these 2 are prime examples. I just can’t choose!

I love Light years and I always have.
Sirens took more of an efford to get to like it.
I still don't appreciate the album version.
So I have to vote Light years.

I did love the story you told.
I can imagine Sirens having a large impact there.
It did on me when I saw the clip about Steve Gleason with Sirens running under the film.

Although I understand why you like Light years and Sirens, I see them as very different.
Sirens does speak of loss, but it's rather the fear of losing than actual loss.
Light years shows the love for a person like Sirens does, but the love is lost and will only remain as a memory.
It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.

Yes that solo isn't Mike's best work.
It sounds rather 80's big hair band.

I laugh at this comparison.. First time I heard Light Years I was amazed by its melody, very original and well constructed.. still impress me to this day, after almost 15 years.. Sirens, I was quite shocked by its average level, and more so considering it was a PJ song.. then you have the outro of Sirens with those annoying and senseless "aahh, oohh".. when the outro of light years is simply awesome, especially the version from Seattle 2000 2nd night... How a PJ fan can prefer sirens to light years is a mystery to me..
