I ranked No Code by track...how would you rank it?

I write for a blog, and this week I took advantage of my situation to promote one of my favorite albums, No Code. I hope it is one of your favorites as well! It is refreshing that they still play songs off of No Code live although it isn't one of their well known albums (in Vancouver 2011 they played 6 tracks!)

Here's the full link:

http://www.poweranks.com/blog/ranking-all-the-tracks-on-pearl-jams-no-code

And here's my ranking just incase you don't feel like clicking the link:

13. Mankind
12. I'm Open
11. Habit
10. Lukin
9. Hail Hail
8. Sometimes
7. Around the Bend
6. Red Mosquito
5. Smile
4. In My Tree
3. Who You Are
2. Present Tense
1. Off He Goes

How do you guys rank it? Or what's your favorite track off the album?

No Code is perfect, it's too difficult for me to rank them...maybe Present Tense or Hail Hail is my favorite right now, but ask me in a month or so and I'd give you a different answer.
  • CrookedTomCrookedTom Posts: 252
Yeah my favourite too. It's just the flow of the album, Vedder's voice, and the brilliant cover / artwork.
All songs are worthy (even Mankind), and I would rank it as follows:

    1) Off He Goes
    2) Smile
    3) Hail Hail
    4) In My Tree
    5) Present Tense
    6) Around The Bend
    7) Red Mosquito
    8) Sometimes
    9) Who You Are
    10) Lukin
    11) Habit
    12) Mankind
    13) I'm Open
  • My ranking of the songs would go:

    1. Red Mosquito**
    2. Hail Hail
    3. Habit
    4. Smile
    5. Off He Goes*
    6. Present Tense
    7. In My Tree
    8. Who You Are
    9. Around The Bend
    10. Sometimes
    11. I'm Open
    12. Lukin
    13. Mankind

    * This one moves all the way to # 2 played live. Fantastic Live!!!
** This one played live with Ben Harper on the slide guitar is absolutely brilliant (my white whale)

Very hard to pick a favourite but I have to agree, this song live with ben is something else. Was lucky enough to see them perform it with ben twice in one week on the 09' Aus tour

Just thinking the same thing. I'm Open is one of my favorite parts of the PJ's best album.

Why so little love for I'm open?

Don't get me wrong, I don't think I'm Open is terrible or anything like that. The only reason why I ranked it low was because it is an unconventional "song", if you could even call it a song. I actually like it a lot, along with "I'm Still Here", I just don't know if it should've been on the album taking up a track.

If I could choose, I would've had Mankind and I'm Open be B-Sides, while including "I've Got Shit" and "Long Road' onto No Code, as both of those songs would've fit perfectly on No Code.

I agree with you that I got Id and long road would have fitted nicely on No code.
However I'm open fits even better because of the experimental nature of the album.
I understand you comparison to I'm still here, but it also falls somewhat short I feel.
The reason I think so is because I'm open is fully worked out and I'm still here to me is only a sketch.
You're right about calling it unconventional, but there are alot of bands that have little pieces of music like that.
I think I'm open is placed quite nicely in the tracklist. It's a majestic opener for Around the bend.
One is about a the loss of the inner child and the other is a sweet lullabye, it's almost
like he's trying to prevent the lyric's for I'm open from happening to the subject in Around the bend.

I'm open fits very well with Sometimes and Present tense in terms of sound and style.
It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.

(I'm 100% sure about I'm Open though. It's the only song on the album that I actually don't really like. I just don't feel it - has an insincere or contrived tone for me.)

Not to jump on you, but I am just very curious because it is so far from how I feel about the song.

Holy Balls, after listening to Red Mosquito several times, I think it jumped up a couple ranks for me, it sounds incredible live. I hope to see it in person one day.

The inclusion of Ben Harper really enhances the live version of the track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYAZev6otCc

And who could forget the famous Live On Two Legs version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yd97McRleSE
