Do you like the Ween?

There doesn't seem to be a lot of cross over when it comes to Ween and Pearl Jam fans.

I know Dean Ween isn't a fan of Pearl Jam:

"Being on MTV back then wasn’t a big deal — we were on MTV a lot. They did that Sunday night thing, 120 Minutes, or whatever it was called, and we played spring break between Ru Paul and, like, Motley Crue with Pauly Shore [hosting] and shit. It was a weird time. Like I said, you had, like, the Chili Peppers next to Janet Jackson on the charts and Nirvana blowing up the world. There was just a lot of shit going on. It’s pretty cool looking back on it now, although at the time I was a first-class hater of all that stuff [laughs] — I hated Nirvana and I hated Pearl Jam and I hated all that. [Now] I love Nirvana, but I still hate Pearl Jam."

    I miss Ween. Epic shows.

Deaner is running a charter fishing boat. He was going to do a fishing related reality show with Les Claypool.

His other band, Moistboys, is getting ready to release another album. I know he did some work with Josh Homme and some of his other "friends."

Geaner released a solo album back in the spring. Not sure what he is up to right now.

The Boognish has heard my call:

    http://www.mickeysfishing.com

Please read this! Come out and show your support for a cause that means a lot to me!

On Sunday, October 6th from 5-9 p.m., acclaimed guitarist Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo (Ween, Moistboyz) will perform a special benefit concert in support of the Long Beach Island Surf Fishing Classic. Mr Melchiondo will perform his own songs, as well as sets with legendary singer songwriter Chris Harford and the Moistboyz. The backing band will feature Eric Slick (Dr Dog), Dave Dreiwitz (Ween) as well as many more of the area's top musicians and also some surprise guests! Also featured is local favorite and Southside Johnny lead guitarist, Billy Walton and his Billy Walton Band. The benefit show will be held at the Sea Shell Club and Resort on the Beach at Centre Street and Atlantic Avenue in Beach Haven, NJ.

Billed as Dean Ween & Friends, the concert will not only boast four hours of world class rock, but will feature unique auction items from the music, sports and fishing industries, including a Fender Stratocaster guitar, rod and reel outfits from Shimano, a custom rod by CTS Rods, a Chip Kelly autographed football, signed Gordie Howe merchandise, as well as several fishing charters from LBI and local area fishing guides.

"The island is a very special place to me and winning the derby was a dream of mine for many years. The devastation that Sandy had on the Island was heartbreaking to me and this is my chance to give something back to a place that is very dear to my heart. The Island is a magical place in the fall, it was the setting for some of the best work that Ween ever recorded as well as my fondest childhood memories. Fall on LBI without the Derby is unthinkable to me and I hope that anyone else that has ever been touched by LBI in a similar way would come out to this concert and show their support."
    – Mickey Melchiondo

A charter boat Captain and fishing guide himself, Mickey Melchiondo has been fishing the LBI beaches since childhood, and returns every season to enjoy the outstanding action with bluefish and striped bass. His band, Ween famously recorded their album The Mollusk while staying at a rented beach house in Holgate back in 1995. Melchiondo also recently filmed a pilot episode of a television reality show with Les Claypool of the band Primus that features a combination of fishing and rock and roll. The show is currently being shopped to major cable networks.

Since 1955, the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce (Chamber), with generous support from the local business community, the Long Beach Island Surf Fishing Tournament has been helping extend the beachfront tourism season while bringing in anglers from all over the region to compete in this fall tradition.

Regrettably, the 58th annual event in 2012 was cut short by Superstorm Sandy, which in turn has forced the Chamber to step back on its responsibilities with the tournament. The Long Beach Island Surf Fishing Classic committee has undergone revamping and overhaul in recent months, as local business owners and anglers have united to salvage the longstanding tradition.

Melchiondo says, "Sandy may have been very cruel to LBI, but it also brought out the best in a lot of people as well. The Island is still showing some scars but the Derby is a very important part of the healing process and it is essential that it continues uninterrupted this year and forever. My fishing schedule has me on the water 4 or 5 days a week and yet I still sign up every year and take time to come down and still hope to win it! The best I've managed in the past were some daily prizes for biggest fish but I'm not done yet!"

The 59th consecutive LBI Surf Fishing Classic is set to kick off for eight consecutive weeks beginning on Monday, October 7th, which makes the October 6th event with Dean Ween & Friends a unique celebration of sorts for anglers and music fans alike. It also takes place soon after the commencement of the 2013 Chowderfest Classic, giving locals and visitors alike a place to hang while the weekend traffic thins out!

The event is a 21 and over event, being held at the Sea Shell Club, which is on the beach in Beach Haven. Tickets are just $25 apiece and in short supply at Jingle’s Bait and Tackle in Beach Haven, Fisherman’s Headquarters in Ship Bottom, Surf City Bait and Tackle, and Panzone’s Pizza in Surf City.

Tickets are also available online at: http://www.mickeysfishing.com/

    Aaahhh... The Boognish.

Ween was the soundtrack to my degenerate high school days in the mid-90s. Hanging out ripping bong hits, drinking all kinds of cheap booze and blasting some Pure Guava, Chocolate and Cheese, and the Pod. Good times!

Got a chance to see them before their curtain call. I'll still throw some Ween on. The lady usually questions my musical selection, but man, does it bring back some great memories of when I really didn't have any cares in the world.

Outside Lands 2009 - Ween was in the line-up and I was on the fence wether I would watch them or not. I knew the name but not their music, but then I met a guy buying posters and he told me I HAD to check them out. So glad I did, I couldn't believe what a hard core cult following they have, it rivals, some would say surpasses PJ's hardcore fan base and I was right in the middle of it with an amazing couple I met from Edmonton. Boognish tattoos everywhere, singalongs to practically every song, the Blarney Stone is classic. One guy was using a watermelon for a bong. I haven't turned into hardcore fan but I will always have fond memories of that show.

Ween was definitely an amazing live experience. There was an exciting chaos that the band and crowd shared. A lot of the hardcore fans had a very elitist mentality. The bands forum was downright hostile. Somehow it all just added to the fun. I guess it was the punk, fuck you mentality. At the end of the day it was a community of people who loved music.

    Gene Ween Does Billy Joel!
Haha, Deaner does an Iggy Pop cover band and now Gene is doing a Billy Joel cover band. That sums up why I love this band. Im going to catch the May 28th show at Brooklyn Bowl. If Im feeling naughty I might also go to the May 29th show in Philly. http://freemantheband.com

though i never got into them too heavily, i always appreciated that they could pretty much play any style any time. talented musicians, the lot of them.

i remember seeing them at lollapalooza in 2006(?) and they jammed the fuck out of captain. sadly it's not on youtube. here's a 2007 performance though.

I noticed that as well. I wonder if he is doing it because he is moving back towards Ween or if he realized going by Gene makes him more money.

More than likely the later. I mean really; who the fuck is Aaron Freeman.

At least Deaner has kept it real.
